Just realized /r/DerekSmart and /r/StarCitizen are two sides of the same coin. Both are cataloging the statements made about a game. Wonder which sub will be right and which will be filled with unfulfilled dreams?

We really do need Derek Smart was Right t-shirts...

This is to be expected. The toupee wearing thumb had a 1,000 script at some point. The SQ42 script has to be pared down to fit on one page, double spaced if there is any hope for release.

r/starcitizen: Comparing CIG to other game companies isn't fair and doesn't make sense

S0ul_Tear posted:

I know this post is long, but if you ever lost hope in CIG, felt doubt about the project or even considered a refund, then this post is made just for you.

I would say the number one reason people lose faith in this game is because they start comparing CIG to other game companies and how long they normally take to roll out a AAA title, let me tell you in my opinion why that comparison is like comparing apples to oranges.

Now the most common comparison circulating around at the moment is people saying how Mass Effect: Andromeda(A game developed by Bioware and published by Electronic Arts) started development in 2012 and it's coming out this year while Star Citizen started the Kickstarter in 2012 and is still a long way to go while scamming us out of our hard earned cash. Now at first this sounds like a valid argument, and it truly makes you think, that's only up until the point where you actually look at official statistics that show you that Star Citizen didn't technically have the same development Mass Effect: Andromeda had, let me show you why by listing three main comparisons point by point below:

1(ME:A)-Bioware are owned by EA, one of the biggest gaming company giants on the planet that existed since May 28 1982(that's 35 years!), which means they have all the technology they need programmed already and have a state of the art engine that doesn't need rewriting coded by a team of expert engineers in the span of months upon months. 1(SC)-CIG is an independent company that was founded only recently in 2010, it then spent two years working on a concept trailer to showcase its idea for a game, they had no form of technology, mechanics, engine tools or even a proper office even after the launch of the concept trailer for their Kickstarter.

2(ME:A)-The most recent employee count of Bioware was in 2010, and that's 800 employees, it takes no genius to figure out that they have grown substantially by then since it has been 7 years. 2(SC)-Here we have a more detailed transparent evolution of CIG employees over the years brought to us by the Gamescom presentation slides: Employee numbers each year but different months: Dec 2012: 8 Dec 2013: 60 August 2014: 156 August 2015: 260 2016-Today: Around 360+

3(ME:A)-Funded by a chunk of EA's 4,000,000,000$+ revenue(2016), it's in a traditional 60$ game format, DLC and Microtransactions controlled by the publisher and not the developers, no worries about consistent updates to improve the game unless there's a game breaking bug, game life expectancy over by the time the last story DLC comes out(if it's even planned). 3(SC)-Funded by a never before seen pledge system through a custom website, no corporate investors and full control over the game, no obligations of deadlines(except community pressure..) and no obligations of becoming a cash cow aka full on South Korean MMO, voluntarily chose to have an open schedule.

Now as you can see, CIG's employee numbers alone show why it's foolish to compare them to Bioware or anyone else for that matter, CIG is only now starting to pick up the pace! To develop a blockbuster movie these days you need more than 800+ people, and that's a 2 hour movie at most, here it's a living breathing world. I totally understand your frustration regarding development times, especially if you have been a backer since 2012, it has indeed been a while, but this literally has never been done before, this amount of money has never been handed to such an ambitious and talented INDEPENDENT team, I highly emphasize on that word because it's so very important! When you work for a publisher, you have to cut out so many awesome features from your game in order to comply with their deadlines, that's not the case for us! Now obviously CIG are not perfect, their holiday livestream is an example, their misleading release estimates and the controversy over the vertical slice, but so far Chris hasn't revealed a solid release date except for what he hopes to achieve, there wasn't a valentine's day livestream so I guess they're improving and we should see news about SQ42 soon? :)

Also it's important to note that they're developing TWO games at the same time, which is more of a reason to not compare them to a modern game studio! Star Citizen isn't a AAA game, I would say it might be the first AAAA game, solely made for PC performance without console limitations! Like some wise person said in a thread on this subreddit once: "Don't be the publisher", don't pressure them into releasing an incomplete mess, let them take their time and if they have something they're comfortable showing then welcome them with open arms, if they don't, well i'm sure it's for a good reason!

Thank you for reading, I just felt like some people needed a small reminder of how ambitious this project is, it's normal to lose faith sometimes, even I was going to refund once after reading a lot of angry people's opinions, but then I looked through facts and made up my own opinion, you should too, see ya in space my friends.

TL;DR Employee counts show that CIG technically didn't have a decent sized team for an ambitious project such as this until 2016, we come to that conclusion by comparing it to Bioware as an example. CIG makes mistakes like anyone else, but it's important to manage expectations and to not pressure them into releasing something they're not comfortable with.

so since we're on the topic of refunds and that whole data collection that bit CIG in the rear end, I figure now would be a good time tell everyone that a source tells me that if you have gotten/requested a refund, you are essentially blacklisted, and purchasing a ship in the future may be problematic if the game ever comes out (lol)

I can see them attempting it for people trying to buy back in with big ship purchases, but lol if you think they will be able to do this for the retail release.

Even if they try and the game is so amazing that you can't live with yourself if you miss out (lol), there are plenty of ways to work around it. Your credit card will expire before the game is released (and if you rent, you'll probably have moved), you could try a new paypal account, create a new bank account, use a visa/mastercard prepaid card, or as a last (or first) resort you can always pay a friend/relative to make an account and buy the game. It is pretty hard to keep someone out if they desperately want to play, and aren't doing anything in-game to get the attention of the moderators. It is just a scare tactic to dissuade people from going through with the refund.

yes all valid points; there are definitely workarounds; I figured it was worth posting as this is poo poo they are actually internally telling people - not to mention some spreadsheet that I'm sure is being compiled of people who have refunded sitting on some CIG computer

So from what he's posting there, I gather he's currently pondering the rapidly incoming release date of ME:A and is quietly making GBS threads bricks, while trying to convince everyone that it can't be compared to SC in any way that makes CIG look dumber than they already look.

Definitely looks like he's looking for every excuse under the sun to defend CIG, I wonder just how much he's going to be sweating with terror in the days leading up to ME:A release. All the while rocking backwards and forwards muttering "Chris wouldn't let me down, SC is going to be better than ME:A, they can't fail me, I love them and they promised me my precious, yes it'll be ok, it'll all be ok".

Edit: Actually I'm not being entirely fair. Derek never stole other people's money to fund his projects under false pretenses. Chris knows far more about that.

Just reading the latest letter, For a cutting edge development company they sure seem to spend a fuckload of money on airfares for "meetings" that sound like could easily be done over Skype or even just a regular phone call.

I've worked in places with old school thinking like that before, we had our exchange server on an ESXi box die and management were fuming that people weren't there on site fixing it while they were rebuilding it from a backup remotely and even once it was fixed and running again, they still couldn't get their head around how they did it without being on site.

I emphasise the old school way of thinking because it just further cements the idea that Chris is stuck in the 90's and hasn't done anything major since.
