I want you to know that the way snp fucks with labour makes me hate them as much as you hate... well everyone not the snp I guess. Maybe agitating for a second referendum so soon after the first was a bit of a poo poo move. Lol, we're going to get a literal coalition of chaos if the conservatives squeak in.

Though I have to say "gently caress this lovely island why can't I quit you" is probably the most UKMT sentiment I've heard in a long time so well done there.

Mister Adequate posted:I'll admit it's probably the most tempting look at Westminster they've ever had, but SF's principles run pretty deep. To be extra clear: as much as such a position would look tempting to most, your average Sinn Fein partisan hates the Tories. The modern Tories are the people who claim the mantle of those who caused Ireland centuries of suffering and agony, depopulated her and left her to starve and tried to force a religion on them. Even moreso than Labour, the Conservatives represent Conquering England to Sinn Fein. These partisans would, given the choice and means, rather stand before the Tories, take out a sharp implement, and carve out big chunks of their own necks rather than ever cooperate with the despoilers of Ireland. And on top of this, they'll never be in coalition with the DUP. The DUP are the successors to the side the IRA was fighting against locally during the troubles. It's just Tories + DUP. Sinn Fein won't show up to party.

I strongly suggest that anyone who wants to figure out how politics might go after this should go find out as much as you can about Jim Callaghan's Labour government and how politics worked during it. Let's talk about pairing, for instance. Usually when one side has a clear majority, MPs from opposing sides with similar interests or occupations are "paired" together. Most votes are attended by far fewer than all 650-odd MPs; when an MP on one side has some unavoidable business that prevents them from being present to vote in divisions (insert cynical speculation here about the nature of said business), they have a "pair" on the other side who agrees to also not vote, in order that votes can still happen and not be dependent on who can physically get the most MPs to the House (and yes, there are often good reasons for an MP to have something better to do than voting on 100 individual amendments to the Fisheries (Amendment) Bill). Now imagine that you have a tiny or non-existent government majority. The temptation to bend, gently caress with, manipulate, and break the pairing system now becomes incredibly strong; a critical vote won by subterfuge is still a critical vote won. There are stories (which after a night of no sleep I can't find again) of whips going so far as to take critically ill MPs out of hospital and wheeling them unconscious on a gurney through the lobby, and then having a vicious argument at the other end as to whether the MP was actually still alive when he went through the lobby. There is every chance that this could get absolutely vicious as gently caress if the government manages to sort an agreement that gives them an all-attending majority of, say, 5 or less.
