So presumably May rushed off to Buckingham Palace to head off a leadership challenge because it looks a bit rude to sack the person Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has just asked to form a government, but what happens if they do still open the trapdoor? Is there a constitutional difference to it happening before Parliament is actually in session to it happening during the session?

Does the constitution actually make an allowance for PMs and changing them? I thought it was whoever the party that forms that government chooses?

You absolutely can challenge the sitting PM. Heseltine doing so in 1990 and forcing a 2nd round of voting is what got Thatcher to resign.

Yeah, watching it now, thanks to some absolute lunatics in the audience, I have learned that Corbyn failed massively, don't be mean to the DUP, May is really strong and stable actually, and Labour have ruined democracy by taking away votes from other parties. Also there definitely hasn't been any austerity or any funding cuts of any kind.

So all May said to the Queen is "I think I can pass a Queen's Speech bill". She now has to prove that she can once parliament resumes.
If she can't, Corbyn gets a chance to try instead.
If he can't either then there's another election.

The DUP makes money from the fragile peace. Lets not forget there is more than a whiff of corruption about em. They want money coming in and businesses reaping profits. Bombs going off is bad for business.

Power-sharing collapsing is manageable but they are not going to call for vigilantes to take to the streets and the execution of gerry adams like the old days

Yeah, really, neither side wants Good Friday to collapse. Sinn Fein and the Irish Republicans are perhaps not wholly satisfied with it, but it's still a preferable arrangement to violence against kids and working it is much better optics.

A hard border and the idea of DUP or similar groups having significant power in London would mean they may feel the only way to achieve their dream is to go back to the fertilizer, though.

But yeah, it'll be hard to radicalize a new generation, as it turns out. All of the current kids are used to peace and are just grateful not to get shot at anymore. Of course, a few years of direct rule and feeling like they have no say in government could change that, but even then it wouldn't be immediate.

Well yes I know that, I'm talking about the actual constitutional roles here.Major was "asked" to form a government by the Queen once he won the election, in the same way May and Brown were after their transitions. But that was all during an actual sitting Parliament. I just wondered if there were any other wrinkles to the constitution that might prevent the Tories from taking May around the back of the shed prior to a Parliament actually being assembled.

The total abandonment of logic was really funny to me. You could almost see the thought process of 'This isn't what she said would happen! Someone must have cheated!'

And that's how you get from a hung parliament to Labour ruining democracy by doing too well, or everyone who voted Labour being gullible idiots.

Yes, I know that (I spent an unbelievable amount of time explaining this in 2010).

I'm talking about the fact that in actual constitutional terms May didn't go to the Queen and say that - the Queen, on advice of the Privy Council, asked May to form a government. It is then up to Parliament to ratify that government the debate and vote on the speech. I don't know if it's within the Prerogative for the Queen to ask someone else to form a government once she's asked someone without Parliament's approval, and I was wondering if anyone else did.

It's meant to be a representative sample of the electorate... which given means only 42% of the electorate voted tory, and 40% voted labour, it will be hostile to either party, technically.

It's the same hilarious reason Boris Johnson threw a shitfit about the bbc being "biased". They're not biased, it's just that a majority tory government with 35% of the vote doesn't have a majority of people in the audience. it has 35%.

I think the idea is they wouldn't take the Westminister whip and instead be a Scottish breakaway.

Again, I did wonder how a Scottish Lesbian Leader (SLL) would take May trying to survive power by aligning with a party that believes she will burn in hell. So that's a thing worth exploring.

Right, but they took the bookings for the audience before the election. So they were working off other numbers than the results, and as the polls favoured the Tories that meant that the demographics of the audience tonight favoured the Tories.
