I'm going float that the DUP probably settled on a deal for an increase in the block grant to cover the regional financial impact of Brexit (probably only between the £200-300mil range), either a scrapping of the bedroom tax or an increase in hardship allowance for NI to allow the offset scheme currently in place to extend beyond its current 2020 deadline, a maintenance of the winter fuel allowance, keeping the pension triple lock, commitment to maintain the freeze in domestic rates in NI and the non-implementation of domestic water charges in the event of direct rule, and some robust language on prioritising a frictionless border as a key Brexit negotiation priority

Because from here all she's got to look forward to is the after-dinner lecture circuit and/or 'political consultant'. She'll never hold any real power again.

It's one of the few occasions where you can genuinely swoop in like some sort of caped super-hero, and save someone's life. There are age limits though - the Anthony Nolan Trust prefers under 30s, and the British Bone Marrow registry prefers under 40s. If you are also of minority ethnicity - in UK terms - they really, really need you. I'm not allowed though. I received several units of someone else's blood, which obviously I'm hugely grateful for, but the risk one of the donors had eaten a dodgy burger at some point is too high. Considering that up until the accident I was a regular blood donor myself...

oath2order posted:New American here: Can someone explain this one to me? I'm not entirely sure what the Queen's Speech is, and the House of Lords just confuses me on general principle. When Parliament opens the Queen delivers a speech written by the government outlining their plan for the coming year in terms of policy and bills, a basic programme of government. After parliament is open the speech is debated for a couple of days and at the end a largely symbolic vote is taken. If the vote fails its considered that the government lacks the confidence of the house, it does not have the support to proceed with its programme of government and the pm is bound by convention to resign or to go to the queen and recommend she appoint a new prime minister to attempt to form a government

Yeah but our government is probably going to collapse at the end of the month so control of welfare will go back to London and the DUP will probably want the existing special allowances they negotiated a while back to offset some cuts to be maintained (which was no sure thing) Or if it doesn't collapse (somehow) they'll probably want any new cuts to not come into play at all

oath2order posted:Ok, this is basically what I thought. I guess I just didn't understand how the Queen's Speech and the manifesto not being followed or being weak strengthened the house of lords. There's another point, which is that by strict convention the Lords will not block anything that was in a party's manifesto. That's considered to have been already approved by the British people and so if it passes the commons it will pass the Lords. The problem the Tories have is a shaky majority meaning they will struggle to get anything controversial past the commons even if it was in their manifesto. They also don't have a majority in the Lords. So anything they manage to get through the commons that wasn't in their manifesto can be amended or blocked at that stage. And their manifesto didn't have a lot of promises in it, so their ability to get legislation passed is hampered in both Houses.
