In the US, in our highrises, there are multiple stairwells in multiple locations. Because tall buildings having just one stairwell has lead to many hundreds of deaths. We learned this lesson by the 1940s. Because we had many hundreds of deaths because there was only one set of stairs leading to just one exit.

You were building steel framed buildings without a core though. 1 WTC is a central core design.

We still put multiple stairwells in the core, the usual arrangement is on opposite sides to give maximum separation.

Tax evaders exposed: why the super-rich are even richer than we thought

I'm hearing echoes of the ferry disaster in South Korea which had that combination of corporate negligence and government culpability.

quote:

There are almost 7,000 fewer firefighters in England than five years ago, leading to longer response times and a 25% fall in the number of fire prevention visits, according to the latest Home Office figures published last month.

The reduction in the number of firefighters and staff employed by the fire rescue services to 42,300 has been more than matched by a long-term fall in fire deaths from more than 750 a year in the early 1980s to 264 in 2014-15.

However, the number of fire-related deaths rose to 303 last year – a 15% increase – bringing the downward trend to an end.

The number of uniformed firefighters stood at 34,400 in 2015-16 compared with 41,202 in 2010-11 – a fall of 6,802.

The Home Office figures show that the fire service carried out 581,000 home fire risk checks in 2015-16 - 25% less than five years earlier. The 63,000 fire safety audits of non-domestic premises last year, also down 25% compared with five years ago.

quote:

The UK's highest court has rejected an appeal by a mother and daughter in their legal battle for women from Northern Ireland to receive free abortions on the NHS in England.

The Supreme Court challenge centred on the case of a Northern Ireland woman who became pregnant when she was 15.

The mother and daughter had contended that the UK health secretary has the power to make provisions for Northern Ireland residents to access free NHS abortions in England.

They claimed that it was "unlawful" that he had not done so.

However, Supreme Court judges dismissed the mother and daughter's appeal by a narrow majority of three to two.

Delivering the ruling, Lord Wilson said it was not for the court to "address the ethical considerations which underlie the difference" in the law regarding abortion in Northern Ireland and England.

However, he said the five judges had been "sharply divided" on the case.
