Glastonbury gets by despite its huge costs because the artists themselves do it for barely a fraction of their usual fee. Such is the mythos and legendary status of this event. I imagine that wouldn't change under corbyn. And also I wish this meme about everyone here being middle class would die off. Yes, the tickets are expensive, but all of that is put into the festival, the eavises are not making big profits out of it. The financing scheme is £20 per month and it gives you plenty of time to get the money together. There is a poo poo tonne of people here from all walks of life. Barring the posh toffs who live in prebuilt tents and exclusive campsites, everybody is on a similar level here, it is an equaliser and there is something for everyone. The only other complaint is food prices, and I wish there was a way that could be brought under control a bit. But you can bring as much cheap food and drink as you want into the festival, unlike other places that will limit that to force you to buy from vendors.

This is also part of a general strategy to discredit anything positive for their political enemies. Corbyn's speech getting mass applause at Glastonbury is illegitimate because A) they'll applaud anyone who promises them free toys B) they're all middle class champagne socialists anyway C) they're children who don't understand the real world D) what was he doing there anyway, he should have been honouring veterans instead (never mind that he did that as well as Glastonbury* - plenty of people will never hear about that because the right wing rags won't tell them). It works on their core audience who don't expose themselves to other news sources, but thankfully not on everyone. *Seems we were misinformed about this - he didn't. I withdraw this point. I know he wants a less insane version of it than May, but is that more out of 'This is probably unstoppable at this point let's try to make a softer landing' or what? Labour want to protect jobs and rights and also expressed interest in remaining within the customs union but leaving the single market, which is probably crazy pants territory but is a reasonable sign of wanting "soft" brexit. If Labour get in post-brexit they might actually be able to do something good with it by nationalising stuff while avoiding EU competition laws that'd make this harder or impossible and if they get in before it's possible they might agree to a second referendum or something when everyone inevitably decides it was a loving awful idea.

Nah, this is still far too tenuous. We really need the brexiteer's nose rubbed in it so only idiot die-hards are going to pretend it wasn't obviously looking like a total disaster. The basic issue is anyone political who proposes a change of course looks like the liberal elite betraying the will of the people, which is what did this stupid thing in the first place because people have had enough of experts. While that's an objectively moronic thing to say, it sadly does describe an awful lot of people's views. There basically needs to be a gut bellyfeel in the country that this is bad, not any of this silly "objective, provable facts anyone can check if they're not stupid or lazy" thing because you know all about the liberal bias with "facts". spectralent fucked around with this message at 01:11 on Jun 25, 2017 |

It's kind of silly for blaming the working class for not trusting 'experts' when both parties had been holding up austerity economists and other neoliberal shits. Like, if they didn't want that to happen maybe they shouldn't have shoved idiots in front of cameras and called them experts.

I do get the sense that the general direction of public opinion is slowly beginning to shift against Brexit, particularly given the Tories' election fiasco, May being a caretaker PM, and the perception they are mishandling the negotiations due to incompetence. However it is still has a long way to go before any call for a second referendum would be accepted. Right now it would be screamed down by the hard Brexiteer minority as a betrayal/high treason, and the person/party suggesting it would be slaughtered politically. Its possible the public mood will continue to turn against Brexit, particularly if the negotiations are a public shitshow, but there's a good chance it won't shift far enough in time.

Remain wins: the hardcore Brexit brigade are taught a lesson that "democracy doesn't work". not every Leave voter was a horrible racist thug, but pretty much every horrible racist thug voted Leave. civil unrest. a spike in hate crimes. a spike in people voting for awful reactionary parties now with moral high ground. fascism.

OwlFancier posted:I'm not really much interested in live music tbh. Well, it's really good fun. Gets the blood pumping, the adrenaline rushing through your veins. So many times I've come out just on a completely natural high, it's wonderful. Your mileage may vary, depends on the type of music, the size of the venue, all these things. Plus plenty bands just sound better live than on record because they feed off the atmosphere. And then you have bands who have to be experienced live, either they have an amazing, fun visual show like Flaming Lips or Rammstein, or because they are SunnO))) and you spend the set just literally being pummelled by soundwaves, which is the sort of thing that you can only appreciate live unless you happen to have an amazing PA hooked up to your hifi system and no neighbours to worry about loving off with the volume. Last band I saw live, about 6 weeks ago, just a really basic but fun visual trick. The room was filled with fog from a fog machine, thickest I've ever seen at a gig, and each band member had a miners torch strapped to their head, so all you can see of them through the fog is right lights bobbing up and down. It looked pretty neat. I had a time where after being attacked at a Faith No More concert I found it super hard to go into gigs, and when I did make it in I just couldn't enjoy it, was racked with anxiety. They were the shittest 2 years of my adulthood thus far. Sometimes you get annoyed, people pushing into you and being rude and throwing beers at the stage for some reason which mean you get covered in it, people being obnoxious towards a support band you've paid money to come watch, and sometimes you just can't be arsed getting bashed about by the moshpit, and some venues have shite acoustics and sometimes bands have off nights, but the good times I've had heavily outweigh the bad. I strongly recommend it, but get some decent earplugs. It doesn't just save your hearing, it makes the music sound better.

The problem with a second referendum is that it exposes the stupidity of direct democracy. Namely that it's silly to use a one-time poll of an ill-informed public to try and set the direction of the country in a complex and rapidly changing political and economic environment. Trying to reverse Brexit with another referendum would be using a referendum to demonstrate the stupidity of deciding things via referendum. It wouldn't work, and the political backlash would be extreme.

The only time I'd see a second referendum is once the deal is decided near the end of two years, putting it to the public as a "Are you sure about this guys?" kind of thing once our new relationship to the EU (being it's bitch) is clear. If there's no details, it would just end a rerun of the last one where everyone is voting for their personal brexit.
