It's not right what happened to them. Something is better than nothing but this leaves a dual system of access intact which should not be accepted. This reform was only prised out of the government cause of a one off convergence of electoral calculus suddenly making people notice NIs abortion laws and the horrible situation imposed on women that has been the norm for longer than the Tories have been power. I will not take it for granted that people will continue to remember about this issue or continue to think its important to fight for beyond an attempt to get one over on the Tories for hitching their wagon to the DUP

It's worth bearing in mind they used to be. The introduction of things like the working time directive were good, solid boons to the member states to the south and east. I was pretty hardcore Europhile until 2008 when the EU's response to a fiscal disaster was to just pull apart its cheeks and spray without ceasing.

There are also a lot of women in NI who have been or are being prosecuted for accessing abortion services. A Northern Irish woman who was prosecuted for obtaining abortion pills for her underage pregnant daughter was reported to police by a GP The Police Service of Northern Ireland has carried out a number of searches and seizures connected to the illegal purchase of abortion pills online. A Northern Irish woman who bought pills over the internet to induce an abortion has been given a suspended prison sentence. (In this instance, the woman had told her flatmates she was trying to raise the money to go to England but could not scrape it together. She ordered pills from the internet and did the job herself, alone. A week later her flatmates decided she wasn't contrite and miserable enough for their liking and searched through the outside bins to find the evidence of remains and reported her to the police for being "blasé" about it.) This is not enough, not by a long shot.

In theory this is true, and I was pro-Reform not Leave for quite a while, but Germany is the closest to socialism outside the nords and they're big proponents of austerity (because their currently unique subsidized low wages attract business). I'm just not confident the EU would tolerate large socialist changes, even if it would be good in the long run for them (see: the IMF's own experts saying austerity wouldn't help Greece pay its debt....while forcing further austerity measures).

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but in hypothetical 'UK voted to remain and Corbyn was prime minister' world, couldn't we just tell the EU to gently caress off if they tried to interfere with nationalisation etc? We threw our weight around all the time, so long as we didn't threaten the integrity of the union itself (lol, brexit, oops). I'm pretty eurosceptic but I voted remain precisely because it'd be better to try and change the nastier aspects of the organisation from the inside than from the out

The EU expands from social democracies in the far north to illiberal democracies to the south east, capitulating to an authoritarian pseudo-democracy in Turkey to prevent refugees coming into Europe. Such an organisation, however well intentioned, has allowed too many competing ideologies turn it into a deadlock. Gort posted:Germany's the de-factor leader of the EU and puts the rest of the world to shame regarding refugees They were. Now they're making Greece deport people back to Turkey so they don't have to house them in Europe. Yannis Varoufakis was talking about how a Muslim whose family was murdered in Pakistan because he saved a Christian neighbour from his burning house after he was attacked for his religion. He fled towards Europe with his father, who was beaten to death along the way in Turkey. When he reported this to the Turkish police they beat the poo poo out of him for being an unregistered migrant and told him to get out of Turkey. Eventually he got on a boat to seek refuge in Europe, the boat sank and he was washed up in Greece, who thanked him for his trip and then deported him back to Turkey. No idea what happened to him after that, the night Varoufakis told us about this the man was in his cell awaiting the deportation trip the next day.

Considering what an uphill battle it is these days to bring meaningful moderate change to even one country I doubt there's really much scope for reform within the EU. We'd still be better off in the tent and pissing out than our new place outside pissing in, but I don't really see a future where the EU is anything better than the shitshow it is unless Germany and France go full communism overnight and tag team that poo poo, which is a nice fantasy I admit.

The policy of "progressive nationalisation" (i.e., not re-letting franchises when they expire) would almost certainly be legal under TFEU. And unless Corbyn is going to go all Truman-and-the-Steel-Mills, I'd hazard a guess that the ECJ would allow any other types of nationalisation.

Fifty Labour MPs break the Abstain whip to vote for the single market amendment.

I'd like to recount a fairly heavy personal story that's uniquely relevant today. I'm going to spoiler it as a content warning for abortion and self-injury. At the tender age of 17 I accidentally knocked up my Northern Irish girlfriend. I only found out about NI's abortion rules through that, and I only relatively recently found out that she wouldn't have been entitled to an abortion if she had pursued one in England. At the time she wouldn't even go near a hospital with me, despite not wanting the child. What she actually did was tried to overdose twice, threw herself down a flight of stairs, and naturally miscarried in a psychiatric hospital. Which is what you do to young women when you rule over and indoctrinate them like it's the 18th century and expect them to live in the modern age, as fallible people who make mistakes. Every socially regressive policy has an untold human cost. Last time I spoke to her, ten years after this all took place, she was doing fine and had accumulated 8 cats.

Yeah, thanks to us americans and our janky union, there's comprehensive studies showing that banning abortion doesn't actually reduce abortions, it just raises miscarry rates and results in more dead/unhealthy mothers. Even people who are genuinely concerned with the life of a fetus should be pro-choice, because the alternative just results in more death. Glad to hear she's doing fine now, cheers
