Concerned Citizen posted:just to be clear are you all actually against compulsory education or something The answer in situations like this is to provide extra support to parents or, in the worst case, remove the children from their custody. Sky-high fines or jail-time are likely to just make the situation even worse. When I was on the Cross Country team in high school there were multiple times a cop would see me running down the road during practice and offer me a ride and I would have to say "sorry, I don't think Coach would like that" Why yes I am white

But really, what a fantastic message to teach kids, that if their parents aren't perfect saints, the swift arm of the state will come down upon them and enslave their loved ones. Let's just absolutely terrify them into following the will of the corporate owned ruling class lockstep, that's not like, fascism or anything

another time i got a flat tire and went to put on a donut but i didnt have a lug wrench in the trunk for some dumb reason so i was sittin in my car on the side of the road like an rear end in a top hat without a phone or any real cash and a cop pulled up behind me and gave me directions to a mechanic i could walk to to borrow a wrench (but he said he couldn't drive me because he had to keep patrolling) so idk if that counts as helping because walking sux and he probably just didnt WANT to give me a ride

As someone as a kid whose family was afraid to pursue a trial over a crime that happened to me because I'd missed quite a few days from illness because the school district were being such assholes over the idea of me missing one day of school again, I have very little tolerance for excessive power to punish people over alleged truancy, but that's me.

Maybe food stamps for families with children should factor in grades, because nothing motivates like hunger, and it'll make them have skin in the game. (I don't actually believe this, I just wanted to try and be creative at making things worse)

Concerned Citizen posted:well those are called "compulsory education laws." idk what other way you're supposed to get a parent who deliberately refuses to send their kids to school to do so without compelling them. it's obviously very different from someone who has chronic health issues or other circumstances that make it difficult to get their kid to school on time or consistently, there's no reason that should be a criminal case, but in the case of someone who is healthy has the means but refuses to do so, there's clearly serious problems in that household. Lmao and how can we get drugs off the street without throwing users in prison, too? How do other countries handle this poo poo??? Police just bludgeon everything until it works, right? That's what social programs are? I think? I dunno, I'm only paid to check boxes on a big spreadsheet labeled "engagements."

gather 'round, everybody, as i, concerned citizen, tell you of the hardships that i endured growing up in absolute poverty: i once had to walk from one end of my private school and back, in dress shoes, on completely level ground in a climate-controlled environment. that couldn't've been more than fifteen-hundred feet, round trip. but i endured. i endured. and that's why parents should go to jail regardless of their circumstances.
