Aliens is a fine movie, and it's perfectly normal for people to prefer it over the original, but from a pure filmmaking perspective Alien trounces over it in every respect. Better cinematography, better script, better acting, better sound, etc. I thought here in CineD we appreciated things like that. Edit: IIRC, James Cameron agrees with me.

When he thought he was back he REALLY thought he was back.

I made the mistake of seeing Aliens long after roughly half the film's scenes had become established and predictable action sci-fi tropes elsewhere and it seriously dampened my enjoyment of it. I'm sure I would have liked it much more if I caught it new. vv

That doesnt necessarily mean he's wrong about WW not being very feminist. Just because a woman made it doesnt say much about the content (not many people argue Punisher War Zone is feminist), plus fox news has plenty of sellout women willing to say anything. But 'feminist' doesnt have a set in stone definition either. Is there anything more feminist in WW than in Aliens? Both have lead women going to war.

I rooted for The Hurt Locker to win the Oscar that year. Not because it's at all good, but because I hated Avatar more and was sick of hearing about how revolutionary it was. Now it's almost been forgotten.

Speaking of Avatar, can anyone tell me why they made a theme park for it? I just don't know a single person who really was that engrossed into the avatar "universe" to care enough about it to even go to a theme park, much less 9 years later. Hell, I cant even remember a single name of any of the characters.

Avatar was a phenomenon when it came out, to the point where I remember national TV news talking about people who became depressed and suicidal because they knew they could never live in the world of the Na'vi. There's also a guy out there who became famous because he covered himself head to toe in blue Avatar tattoos. I can only assume they hope that popularity will be rekindled with the sequels, and their Avatar theme park will make huge sums of money.

It's Disney, and even if it doesn't draw additional people to that park, it will let them turn Animal Kingdom from a "half day park" to one that keeps people there until 9pm, greatly increasing the resort's carrying capacity. People will go because it's Disney. Plus, there's supposed to be 4 more movies, all directed by James Cameron, and he's got a pretty solid track record. It's kind of weird Disney invested in an IP they don't own, though. Beachcomber fucked around with this message at 00:41 on Sep 21, 2017 |

Disney approached Cameron about making an Avatar theme park only a year and a half or so after Avatar came out, at a time when hype for it was still big, and more importantly, at a time when the sequels were supposed to start coming out in 2015. So if everything was on track, the park would be opening in time to cash in on the huge Avatar Mania of Avatar 2-5. Also of note, this was a year before Disney bought Lucasfilm and decided they would start churning out their own annual space fantasy series. I'm sure if they had gotten Lucasfilm first they never would have bothered with Avatar World.
