Tiggum’s kind of a weird case because yeah he can be hardheaded to an absurd degree about the weirdest stuff but everyone I’ve ever seen complain about him is 1000x worse. Like a really tedious lightning rod for bad posters.

They present it that way because it scans fine and is an understandable joke, while also being archaic enough that you can tell it's from a language that predates English.

Tiggum posted:I was only "talking about it" to begin with in the sense that I was asking a question in the hope that someone more knowledgeable might have an answer. If that's you, why not just answer the question instead of telling me something I already know? I haven't been here trying to tell anyone anything about translation, people have just been restating my question at me like as though they're answering it. Perhaps the phrase "badly translated" triggered some kind of weird defensiveness; perhaps I should have said "literally translated". But either way, the question I asked was not "why did these idiots translate it wrong, why didn't they do it the way I would have done it (because I clearly think I'm an expert)" that's just something you're apparently reading into it. The question, which I'm still wondering about, is "why did they (the people who publicised this translation) choose to present it in this form instead of translating it in a way that would have more closely preserved the intent and humour of the joke?" If you don't know the answer that's fine, it was just idle curiosity on my part. Tiggum, I mean this in the nicest possible way. There is a historical context, dude. They were translating from an anthropological standpoint. They weren't trying to (nor were they required to) make it funny for you in particular. Normal people can just accept that. You're being tedious about it. If it helps, just remember that it's a dead language now, and no-one needs to care this much about it, unless they're actual joke scientists. e: -----------------8<------------------- Anyway, from the funny pics thread: Snowy posted:What was the porno shop doing with all that birdseed? Tiggum posted:All I did was ask a simple question that still hasn't been answered. All I want to know is why that particular translation is the one that gets quoted everywhere when, in most of the contexts in which you see it, that kind of translation does not seem ideal? What's the source? What were the reasons for translating it that way? Unless you know who translated it and where and why they published that translation then you don't know the answer and your guesses are not helpful. And as far as I can tell that's all you're doing - guessing. I can guess too, I don't need you for that. You, like everyone else who has responded to my question, are providing absolutely no new information then acting like as though you've given not only a definitive answer but that I'm the one who's being unreasonable. The opposite is true. shut the hell up man if you have questions about the translation, maybe google the joke???!?!?!?
