Yea I guess I just don't watch shows that I would consider fluff to the point where I would feel ok speeding them up. Like, with the Brooklyn 99 example, if the whole appeal of the show is a repetitive cycle of predictable jokes, I'll just pass on the show altogether. And I don't hate watch shows, if I'm not feeling like I want to devote 30 mins or an hour to watch it I just drop the show altogether. Maybe that's why I love movies so much, it's a longer one-time commitment but when it's over it's over.

That's understandable. And maybe my example of B99 wasn't the best one; B99 is extremely formulaic, but I love the actors and characters they have built. Without those characters, the writing would not work. It is very predictable, but it's like a sugary candy for my brain. I just spend 15 minutes on each sugar high versus 22. Most things I totally watch at normal speed, and speeding it up isn't even an option. I wouldn't watch Black Mirror at a higher rate, for example. But, like you said, it's all about what and how you enjoy your entertainment. If it's not for you, it's not for you.

I would never speed up a movie but a lot of podcasts are basically just text in a lovely format. I mean I don't listen to them at 2x speed or whatever because I don't listen to them at all, but it's for basically the same reason -- I can easily read two or three times faster than most people speak.

If you want to receive what they're attempting to communicate, speeding things up is fine. This is largely it. There's a lot of stuff I watch at normal speed because it's something I want to watch and enjoy. But other times there's something I want to "know" more than really watch. American TV dramas always end up having some awful filler episodes, but there may still be some plot development I want to pick up rather than skipping it completely. See these are two more examples of stuff I just never feel like I have the time to even mess around with. T.V. drama with many episodes that are just boring filler? No thanks. Movie that nobody likes and I have no reason to believe I will either? Definitely no. There's an endless ocean of actually good films to watch, and only so many opportunities in a given week to watch them. When I finally quit watching The Walking Dead, it was because I kept having to fight the urge to fast forward through the 80% of show that bored me to tears, just to get to the 20% that felt as good as the show that I originally began watching years ago. It made me feel like I was wasting precious time that could've been spent actually enjoying something. 10 Beers posted:My wife and I couldn't get into Nailed It, but that led us to The Great British Baking Show and we really like that. Reading is faster than listening, period. Some things are better communicated through text, and if those things are for some awful reason spoken instead of written, playing them faster doesn't result in any loss of information and can even improve comprehension. The same applies with video, except that video is more often used for purposes besides raw information conveyance.

Or there's some movie that nobody likes, but I'm kind of curious to see it with my own eyes rather than just read reviews complaining about it. I mean, what are you watching, CBS? American dramas have gotten really good at eliminating awful filler episodes that used to be such a main part of shows just because: 1) 22 episode seasons 2) no end goal in sight 3) the idea that TV couldn't be as good, let alone better, than film. If you're watching something like Blue Bloods or NCIS, yeah, you're going to get a lot of crap. Even CBS's biggest prestige drama of the last decade, The Good Wife, had a ton of awful filler episodes, especially as the show went on. BBC America had an X-Files marathon the other day, and while it was great at the time in 1993, there really was a lot of crap in retrospect. Even the epic mythology episodes that dealt with the alien invasion really just tread a lot of water since they never really knew, or cared, where they were going to go with that storyline. Even the new seasons struggle with this. But there is so much good stuff out there today, that you don't have to cling to dramas where only a 1/3 of the episodes are any good. So far I'm more on the side of the Rajneeshes because their transformation of barren ranchland into a self-sustaining community was some awe-inspiring stuff that mostly overshadows the weird personality cult around the Bhagwan. You get the sense that Antelope's townsfolk are mostly jealous and overtly hostile and provocative, and most of the Rajneeshes' response to this is reasonable (so far). The state and federal government being cautious and wary is totally understandable and even prudent with all this just being a few years after Jonestown. You may have a different opinion when you reach the end, but even if you don't (and you are interested enough) it's worth doing some googling after you finish up. There are a couple very important details that the documentary doesn't explicitly explain that lead you to be more sympathetic to the cult than the average person would otherwise be. nessin fucked around with this message at 04:09 on Apr 3, 2018 |

The "monster of the week" episodes were far better than the over-arching narrative ones that just needlessly dragged conspiracies and plot threads (Samantha) along forever. The first 2-3 seasons had high density and high quality "monster of the weeks". After that the diminishing returns ramp up fast.

I only remember two things about x-files: That episode with the flesh-eating whatever inside the old-growth redwood (ends with the lightbulb in the shack flickering/going out?) Running up to change the channel when I heard the theme music because it came on right after other shows I watched but I did (and do, kinda) have this fear of "greys" and that show spooked the gently caress out of 12-year-old me.

I maintain that the Mytharc episodes are still great all the way through the first two seasons. Third season is where it starts to go off the rails, but it’s still basically comprehensible. It coasts like that all the way up to the movie, then immediately after that there’s no possible reason you should ever rewatch a mytharc episode. Those season 1 mytharc episodes, though, the ones with Deep Throat and little parcels of conspiracy answers? They’re gold.

When I rewatched it a few years ago I stopped somewhere in season 4 (I figured I would at least get through all the Vancouver seasons, but, welp). I think what helped the X-Files a lot during it's initial run was broadcast TV in the 90's. It aired Sundays in the 9:00-10:00 slot fall thru spring, so it was dark out during the first run, which added to the already creepy for the time atmosphere. On top of that you had a weekly cool down between episodes, as well as the winter programming break. Today you can watch 5 episodes of the X-Files on a Saturday afternoon, which kills all of the above. The X-Files was a show that really benefited from exactly where it was in the TV schedule.

Yes, even modern prestige tv. That's really not the same as filler though. Long shots are nice to look at, they're aesthetically pleasing and so they have a function other than just filling up time. Monologues(good ones at least) are entertaining and provide good character moments, and lines delivered slowly are often delivered that way for dramatic purposes. So to watch those things on 1.5 speed would be to lessen the impact their intended to have, which again, is about more than just filling time. Filler is when a show is a treadmill for long stretches of time where no development happens with either the plot or the characters.

I like BCS, but I feel like so much of its runtime is dedicated to these things which technically aren’t filler, but they don’t do much to push story and character forward, and maintain a holding pattern. The Walking Dead (at least the 1.5 seasons I watched) was WAY worse about it, and something like Daredevil’s first season wouldn’t technically have filler but it’s also twice as long as it needs to be. Peep Show has it right, six episodes a season.
