Comstar posted:What stuff DID break the game in half? I was never any good at tabletop and lost nearly every time I played. Double Heat Sinks - Completely hosed the heat curve making it possible to remain heat neutral with nearly anything, allowing 'Mechs to devote more weight to weapons which made for faster kills and more dice rolling (which can gently caress with new players because there's more to keep tabs on) Clan Large Pulse Lasers - Pulse lasers were ok (I'd argue they're all too good with a -2 bonus to-hit) but the Clan Large Pulse Laser's massive range makes it king of Pulse Laser mountain, especially since it's 1-1 heat efficient. It's got better range than an Inner Sphere PPC, is easier to hit with, hits just as hard, and has the same heat. Completely broken. Clan LRM-20 - An LRM with no minimum range and half the weight, so you can bring two launchers where an Inner Sphere 'Mech can only bring one. I'm not going to call out the Clan ER PPC, it's honestly fine. An cER PPC and enough heat sinks to keep it heat neutral is 14 tons while a Clan Gauss Rifle and 2 tons of ammo is... also 14 tons. Unless you're only buying one ER PPC in which case your 'Mech's engine double heat sinks already more than cover the cost--but this is the big problem with double heat sinks, the cER PPC just exploits it better than most other weapons. Later equipment gets pretty incredibly good too, but we're talking C3i, Nova CEWS, and iATMs, the (arguably all of them but definitely at least the) latter two were designed to be broken on purpose to make a specific faction that was intended to get wiped out more overtly dangerous.

^^I would call out the clan ERPPC just because it's an ammoless long range headcapper and the game really didn't need more of those. I love that HBS took care to make sure that one-shot headloss is extremely rare, to the point where the only thing that can do it without a counter is an AC20 with breaching shot. Nothing but the AC20 has the damage to do it, and if you are Braced not even the AC20 can. I'd also be really surprised if all the ER and Clan weapons (if HBS ever makes a game with them) keep their no minimum range stuff, because that's just so weird. evilmiera posted:In regards to your spoilered text, what exactly has been changed about them? Going by the trailers, you can mix them with regular heatsinks so they probably don't upgrade the built in default sinking capacity (since this is what makes them so ridiculous this is would be a huge change), they're 3 slots for 1 ton vvvI'm spoilering them because they're LosTech, so probably supposed to be a surprise DatonKallandor fucked around with this message at 12:40 on Apr 23, 2018 |

Double heat sinks just seem so poorly thought out. You shouldn't have something in your game design which is flatout better than something else where the only difference is cost really. The clan pulses and LRMs are the same really, they're just unequivocally better but cost more. All it means is winners keep winning more, which might make sense fluffwise but is poor game design.

I'd say both the cERPPC and the Gauss Rifle are problematic - extreme long-range one shot kill weapons are highly problematic at best. The cERPPC is worse, though, because at least the GR takes up a huge number of crit spaces, explodes and is ammo-limited. Kanos posted:Stuff like the initiative phase system and the simplification of heat and what it does to the mech are both really good ideas that I could see translating to a tabletop game very well, yeah. I'm interested to see if this does happen - for better or worse, TT's rules are basically unchanged after thirty years. There's been tweaks, weapon-specific additions and subsystems added, but the core gameplay? Things like heat, movement and such? I could use my old 1986 CityTech book to introduce somebody who'd never played before and they'd be fine.

My internet at home went out over the weekend and it might not be back in time for tomorrow. I'd like to sign up for the tourney but won't just yet in case. As long as the initial brackets are by time zone I'm sure the quarter finals + can be sorted out across timezones well enough even if it needs to wait until the weekend.

Steam forums are always toxic as gently caress because they're barely moderated. They're a goddamed great example of just what amazing shitheads people can be on the internet if there's no effective moderation. See also: the PUBG pre-game lobby. What's that? You can't see who is saying what from the other teams, making all voice communication essentially anonymous? Time to sit through 30 seconds of everyone around you screeching slurs into their microphones! edit: note that the thing that made SA unique, noteworthy, and an actual quality place to hang out ca. 2000 was the and moderation that actually, you know, moderated. Anyone who ever tried to talk to someone on the various early 00s gaming forums knows what I'm talking about.
