i am deeply concerned about the kernel version of my telephone operation system

this is actually a big dumb problem with android. every iOS update bumps up the kernel on every device to the latest version. android *never updates the kernel* from the version it shipped with, with the exception of added security patches. this means that if new things get implemented that require kernel and driver support, they cannot be supported even in recent devices. android is extremely hampered from getting software improvements due to this.

cdma is dead or will be soon, verizon is no longer accepting device registrations for it and wants to shut it down next year

real world cellular throughput is usually limited by the backhaul to the tower and how buggy the base station is

I don’t know enough to say. it seems like google chooses a kernel for each major release and supports that with security patches for a couple of years or so. of course that means the vendors have to accept the patches into their hacked up kernels and ship a new build, so it might eventually happen.

this means every phone that shipped with ice cream sandwich is still running the ice cream sandwich kernel, even if it has been updated to the latest OS (lol)

the alternate option is for chip and device makers to make their drivers run on every new Linux kernel. they will never do this because it costs money, they just don’t care, and the Linux driver model is that they get to break every driver every release and gently caress you.

Microsoft gave them an example of how to do this and they were too dumb to see it.

Wha'd be swell would be a phone that worked on Verizon with audiophile quality audio AND a good camera, maybe wide angle. The LG Thinq 7 looks pretty close but it's camera is kinda sad compared to the Pixel 2. It's just never going to happen.

Jeff Anderson, the guy who plays Randal Graves, moved into a retirement community at the ripe old age of 40. He pulled out of filming Clerks 3 to instead do nothing.

i actually think this is the right approach, long as they keep up with the security patching for a reasonable amount of time. as the kernel driver support is irrelevant there is really nothing to be gained updating kernels pretty much ever

if anything changing kernels every major release seems more often than could reasonably be necessary, what are they really getting out of it?
