the degrowth being advocated in this thread goes a fair bit past just reducing waste and changes in material production!! no one disagrees with that!

THS posted:the degrowth being advocated in this thread goes a fair bit past just reducing waste and changes in material production!! no one disagrees with that! it doesn't go a fair bit beyond that, but it doesn't take as gospel that every existing mode of living we have now is necessary or desirable, or that incredibly densely populated urban centers that arose for the express purpose of for-profit capitalism are necessary or desirable, everything has to be ruthlessly critiqued if we're going to survive. there are also no prescriptions being handed out, except for poo poo mentioned in that article which sounds weird. we're just saying everything has to be on the table, examined, impact analyzed, that's a materialist approach to surviving climate change imho

This is also why the fully automated luxury communism meme is bad btw. It sets up an expectation that we're all going to be living in the culture in socialism

So.. who exactly is going to offer to replace the means of production for societies without the vast capital reserves usually required to build nuclear power plants? Cuz to me this whole 'degrowth' idea seems to rely on the idea that as rich societies decarbonize their industries, Africa isn't going to continue industrializing using the same carbon-intensive means that got capitalist states where they are today. Which in turn would rely on the absurd dream that they wouldn't have to sacrifice their growth and stability (and thus their basic justification for existence) to prevent us from loving this planet into a coma Someone is going to have to replace all those coal plants if you want to avoid making S.T.A.L.K.E.R. VR into actual reality.

(ie: socialist) Would divert first world capital to industrialize the third world safely. Similar to how the USSR aided African nations but on a much grander scale. This of course assumes a massive socialist wave in the future but the other alternative is planet death.

And only with the cooperation of the capitalist states. Sounds promising.

Missed the degrowth discussion but I have to recommend reading Leigh Phillips, specifically his book Austerity Ecology and the Collapse Porn Addicts. It turned me around completely on the concept of degrowth.
