Pesky Splinter posted:It's missing that very, very, big step of David Cameron, high off the scent of his own farts from the result of the Scottish referendum, started the Brexit ball rolling, entirely independent of Corbyn's ascent to the Labour leadership, in an attempt to resolve a longstanding Tory party issue. This is a very fun thing to think about, given the scottish indyref a) ended up much closer than the polling indicated at the start and b) absolutely did not kill the support for independence and its presence as an issue in Scottish politics, and mainly strengthened it There could be a number of reasons for this, e.g. the inherent appeal of change vs. the boring politicians you love to hate telling you everything is fine, actually, or the abysmal quality of the No campaign due to nobody believing they actually had to take it seriously until the last minute, etc etc, but I'm really not sure anyone learned from any of them come the brexit vote

Oh dear me posted:Corbyn said something like 'article 50 will have to be invoked now'. It's FBPE spin to insist he meant 'immediately' rather than 'now that this has happened', so nsturally ronya repeats it every time Corbyn's position on Brexit is mentioned. it is Corbyn's own defence that he misspoke and should have phrased it better. This puts his face on BBC News the same evening in the wall-to-wall post-referendum coverage with Corbyn Demands A50 Immediately instead of issuing a correction immediately, of course he instead tells Dimbleby this a month later. His office never issues a press statement. Do you really buy that? don't get me wrong here, it wasn't self-evidently questionable to triangulate in 2016. Forecasts back then were that Cameron's successor would not invoke it for a long time, that Leadsom was an idiot extremist for wanting to do so and hence why May needed to be coronated, and frankly it's the opposition leader's job to needle the sitting govt anyway and so some license to move with the tide must be allowed for. It was a gamble that might have paid off if CON had to live with having Farage gnaw on their flanks whilst LAB gets to play to both sides of the gallery but, as we know, the City wing of the Tories turned out not to be in charge after all...

The setup is you're the editor of a newspaper who has to rewrite stories to boost support for either the government or the rebels, with the threat of arrest if you're too pro-rebel, and also keep the circulation of your paper up depending on the sentiment of the readers (which you can of course influence). Hilariously a lot of the negative Steam reviews seem to think that the fact it's easy to beat by going full pro-Government is somehow a mistake rather than the entire loving point.

A Buttery Pastry posted:Wilhelm Stift caused WW1 by investing in the company that build the car Franz Ferdinand rode in on his final day. I like to think the Butterfly Effect requires a butterfly to be part of the explanation (like in that pratchett puzzle game discussed not long ago). For any given event (after butterflies evolved) there must be a butterfly at some point in history which, if the butterfly did something differently, would have altered the event beyond recognition. Obviously many such butterflies exist for any event but there must be a last one, a final butterfly who possessed the last chance to alter that event (the event's butterfly), and a window of time between that chance and the event occurring (the event's butterfly window). So in the case of WW1's butterfly we'd have to find the butterfly nearest to the Latin Bridge at the time of Franz Ferdinand's assassination, which decided not to fly at full speed to get into Gavrilo's eye distracting him at the last second to cause him to miss.

WAR CRIME GIGOLO posted:So what happens to the torys that have been kicked out of tjr party? Is there a good article or wiki to understand this part of the process? They stay on as independent MPs (or join another party) until the next election where they can choose to stand for election again, but not as a tory. As some of them are in safe tory seats where the voters will always vote for the candidate in blue they may look to stand in a different constituency.

I assume no media outlet has yet identified and translated the right chapter of the Necronomicon which deals with the finer points of Tory membership rules. However they're all out until allowed back in, which isn't likely under the current double act in charge. Personally i think that in a post-Boris party we'll see a prospective leader seeking to return people like Clarke, Soames, etc as peers so they can be seen as a compromise candidate. Of course it's open for debate if that happens with the current Conservative party, the Provisional Conservative party, or possible Dissident Conservative party

Ambiguity took the form of letting Benn remain Shadow Foreign Sec I don't think Corbyn would have issued any correction if not for the failed "chicken coup"
