Plus the whole Chemical Mile down near the Philly Airport. Anyway, I kid, I kid. Jersey is a soul suck of a strip mall of a state, but there's lots of woods and trails and parks. I'm in SoCal, we're like 1/8th the population density, but there isn't a square foot of habitable space that doesn't have a walled, gated suburb plunked on top of it. (cue the apologist to talk about the 'running trails' aka unbuildable, unimproved rainwater drainage canyons, and the millions of square miles of empty barren rock once you're on the other side of the sierras.) Edit, I just realized I did an ill advised early 20s NYE in Atlantic City. We rented a place so in the morning I go to scrounge up breakfast fixins. Only food place I could find was a gas station. Coffee was two glass Bunn pots. Not on a burner, just on a formica folding table, cold. Couldn't find butter, asked the guy behind the plexiglass, he asked how much I wanted I said 'Uh, one? One butter?' dude opened a box he had behind the counter pulled out a LOOSIE butter stick and passed it over. They had a box of oreos on a shelf, ripped open, not sure if that was shoplifting or if they were selling loose cookies too. Worst, weirdest place I've been, residential AC in January in the AM. We're gonna have a whole war over who HAS to take south Jersey. PipHelix has issued a correction as of 06:10 on Apr 23, 2020 |

A lot of water has been drawn from aquifers, but we still get lots of water from annual snow pack in the Sierra. With literally any oversight on agricultural usage the snowpack water could still support a huge population (currently farmers protest even beginning to monitor water usage). etalian posted:Yeah the whole thing in Central Valley is the classic case of the tragedy of the commons, not to mention how a small number of rich families control a majority of the ground water rights. A small number of rich people controlling everything is precisely the opposite of a commons. mcclay posted:For the person who said that Reno isn't desirable and won't be fought over, I'm not so sure. We sit on the interior end of the Sierra Nevada portion of I-80; basically controlling access into the interior of the US through the mountains from the most central parts of California. I would not be surprised if either A) we manage to dig out a meme city state that is pushed around and controlled by imperial powers ala Berlin or B) get annexed instantly by the West Coast Alliance so that they can fully control the mountain passes and the trade lanes beyond. If you want to do trading with anything past the Sierra Nevadas Reno is one of the cities you need to hold onto in some manner. My point was that Reno wouldn't be contested by any power outside CA because it has relatively few inherently valuable resources other than the cultural/economic ties it's developed to the Bay Area/California in general. It would be a trans-montane border city of the West Coast Pact in order to assert control over Donner Pass and also to ensure that the people in the high desert had some access to food and culture.

I can't believe that the federal government is just going to.... give away all of its power without a fight. Without anything. Whenever the topic of secession gets brought up in this thread or elsewhere, there's always someone who goes and says no, it'll never happen, the Federal Government will come down like a sack of bricks on any state or states that dare. And then there's these guys who are actually in charge of the federal government, going "Haha lol do it all yourselves!" It makes me wonder, like, if the WSP suddenly announced home rule, would they just be like, "Bye, have fun trying to set up your own army and navy LOSERS! Don't let the door hit you on the way out!"? Yeah the World Without Us (A few fun nihilistic book about the end of humans/How long would things last) goes into how for NYC everything was built over underground streams and the city relies on a vast underground system of drains/pumps. Once the above engineering system collapses you would start to have buildings crashing down due to the foundations being badly weakened over time by water encroachment

I think the Republicans just forgot that the "small government" and "states rights" talk was purely dog whistles as explained by Lee Atwater. In the classic "mistake the finger for the moon" blunder, they now think the goal is to cripple government, and not just talk to win over racist voters. And the junior members working their way up through local governments are crippling local governments too. And then Trump gets elected and literally turns the government into Celebrity Apprentice.
