Phigs posted:The problem is when the AI is set up essentially as a stand-in for a human. You generally have to make the computer asymmetrical for it to provide a challenge to a player, but if it's a stand-in for a human then players will resent it being asymmetrical. So you need to set up the game in such a way that it's clear the computer and player were never meant to be playing the same exact game. Like how in say Starcraft campaign you didn't just get put into a multiplayer map with a computer opponent who had the same start. Yeah, the best “against AI” games are the ones where the AI is shows as something omnipotent and all knowing, playing by its own rules. When you then eventually bash its head in it’s that much more satisfying.

Spear is definitely my favorite weapon rn but weirdly that run I was playing melee instead of special build. I even took a chaos for extra materials that almost killed me. and it ended up being my first run to both beat theseus and get to hades

civ 3 had some really cool ideas but the way it simulated corruption sucked. what it did was, decrease your cities' production based on the distance from the capital plus a malus from your total number of cities--iirc it was originally designed to discourage the popular, optimized infinite city sprawl trick from the earlier games, but all this ended up doing was putting a -95% production penalty on everything but your capital (since that's immune to corruption) once you had a normal-sized empire. the exception case was when you used communism, which averages the corruption penalty out across all cities, which meant that you only took a 90% penalty on everything. but it had the secondary problem of including your capital in this calculation, so your only good city in the entire world is now equally as worthless as every other poo poo city in your empire. civ 4 did "fake corruption," where your city upkeep was higher the further you were from your capital city/ies. this is fine, of course, because it's just a limiter on your economy, and way better than reducing the final output of everything forever. you know what i loved best about civ 4? the quests and the random events. except the barbarian one

Not sure if this is that unpopular, but modern 2D games without any pixel grain or hand drawn styling are super ugly. This was at its worst during the XBox 360 era where decent games like Castle Crashers or Alien Homind would sometimes literally be reconfigured Flash games. This is a real indulgent complaint, because developers have kind of figured this out, but even then "retro" styling feels played out too. Recently, Hollow Knight kind of has it (even though I love that game and the character design itself). Skull Girls has it. It just makes things look a little cheap to my eyes, but I also realise that this is kind of subjective and unreasonable. Cuphead would be an example of how to avoid it creatively. Civ6 is great. You play it for a while and everything takes forever because you have to build a boring lovely district that takes 40 turns before you can build a building that takes another 20 turns. Then you go back to Civ4 and everything is so loving turbo fast! 6 is like a dlc that makes 4 better. Just thinking about seeing a build menu that says "hey, you have stone, go ahead and build the taj mahal in 6 turns, why not" makes me cum in my trousers Icochet fucked around with this message at 16:30 on Nov 13, 2020 |
