peanut- posted:Reading about that Teeside mayor, it seems like he nationalised an airport and got about £300m out of the government for local infrastructure development. This is the most galling thing - the Corbyn era really brought back into the realm of political discussion and possibilities the radical idea that "the government can do things to make things better". That's essentially what led to the surge of Lab support after the 2017 manifest dropped. Then the Conservatives under Johnson embraced that, their chums in the media praised them to the rafters for it while decrying Labour's policies and smearing Corbyn in all the ways. And of course half the Labour party doing the same thing from inside. So now large swathes of the country are seeing an interventionist on-their-side government for the first time in decades but it's Blue. And Labour now don't even have a leadership that wants to commit to that sort of thing on their own terms. Basically the attitude that the poster earlier summed up as: "telling people you'll do things to make their lives better is cheating. You have to promise them that nothing can change because that's what grown-ups do."

The Right took over the party promising to do better than Corbyn and they've unequivocally, indisputably performed WAY worse than even the low points of his leadership. That's a good thing. Seriously, there is NOTHING they can point to as a win for Labour here. Lost Hartlepool, lost multiple councils, over a hundred councillors, lost seats in SocParl, lost voters to the Tories, to the Lib Dems, to the Greens, etc. etc. Any facade they had of being more electable than a Left-wing party is crushed. And if you're worried about the tangible impact to people's lives of Tories being in charge, I wouldn't worry that much. Most Labour councillors are barely or not at all better than Tories to start with. Having a Tory MP/Council/Mayor might actually help bring investment to some deprived areas that they wouldn't have gotten under Labour. And if we do eventually wrest control of the party back from the ghouls not having incumbents like Paul Williamson will be far more of a benefit than a problem. jabby fucked around with this message at 17:31 on May 7, 2021 |

So as the left what do we do from here? It's not like we're all going to rejoin labour to try to fight for a left wing candidate to take over their shitshow. The only way out is another party backed by the socialist lot from labour and that's... just not going to happen? Be bloody funny if corbs split off into another party for this and had a party in nandos though.

Maybe it will even be the right lesson that you have to offer a clear and positive future rather than just manage the decline. Other than that, it seems like NGOs and action committees like the Peace & Justice Project or more single issue ones might be able to push for changes. Don't forget that any of the good things that Tories historically did and at least four fifths of the good things that Labour did were pushed from outside. The Cairo Forces Parliament, the trade unions, various charities and members' clubs and town halls and nonconformists created all those ideas, MPs didn't genius them out of their own brains. It's too early to say - it'll be a couple of days before we know the full extent of the carnage, due to Covid slowing the counts down. I can't really see re-joining Labour as a solution - wouldn't a new left wing leader just be Jeremy Corbyn mark 2?
