Coolness Averted posted:fentanyl had already been a problem in the US, it just reached a point that it wasn't something you were paying attention to/reached the critical mass to be a news story around then. yeah. it was definitely taking off in online markets in the early 2010s for a few reasons -- the really obvious one being that it's far less weight to move, not smelly, and easily concealed. according to contemporary reporting, these were sold in "retail" quantities by vendors who would buy wholesale from boutique labs around the world, frequently in China at the same time there were much better established pipelines for quasi-legal psychoactive synthetics made to order in labs in China for western buyers. the majority of those were nonopiods, eg "party drugs," synthetic cannabinoids, hallucinogens. the government banned those in late 2015. the guardian has a rather sensationalized article that describes a little of what was going on, as does the Washington Post. you may remember the K2/spice and bath salts media frenzies. as you can see, China was being blamed as if it was responsible for all that, and the ban came after pressure from the west. but the "boutique" labs didn't stop existing, and most synthetic opioids weren't banned until 2019. my guess is labs only offered buyers what they could legally make, and with emerging techniques to process wholesale fentanyl into "retail products", the remnants of the more varied RC pipeline were the foundation for streamlined pipelines for fentanyl - an economical substance with characteristics making it highly suitable for shipping and a much more reliable demand, just as the US started doing something about domestic pill mills and overprescribing of opioids. e: to clarify why China had such labs to begin with, it's because all kinds of manufacturing is outsourced there and it wasn't too hard to get a lab in a massive country to make something for you for even relatively small quantities. demand within China was limited; people there were into different things that were harshly prosecuted. nobody was deliberately trying to poison youths anywhere, just making money as usual. so it's probably more like a bunch of overdetermined things that took place before the 2020s and a lot of it was western reaction mawarannahr has issued a correction as of 00:05 on Mar 20, 2023 |
