I'm not sure 'comedy' in his day had the same meaning it does now, at the very least it's closer to what we'd call romcom with a romance being explicitly a central feature. See also The Divine Comedy.

Romeo and Juliet was also a genre-busting swerve back in the day as it starts out like a comedy and switches to tragedy.
