Seth Pecksniff posted:No it's not? VP is tiebreaker so it's functionally 51-50 It's not 51-50. It's currently 49 R, 46 D, and 3 I. The three Is mostly caucus with the D, but two of the three are Angus King and Kristin Sinema. Still, I think Chuck should be able to seat someone. Seth Pecksniff posted:No - House elections have to be decided by election I could see it not being Schiff, then, as he's actually useful in the house at the moment and won't be in the senate. I know he'll still run for the seat in 2024, but I don't know that he'll get appointed to it right now.

I think that's who Newsom promised, iirc. Jokes aside, I tend to feel sorry for Feinstein because she was clearly out of it and unable to take care of herself. I have a lot more contempt with all the people surrounding Feinstein that were fully aware of her condition and let it go on because of stupid power struggles. Maybe hers is/was a critical seat they couldn't lose, but that's why you a) don't elect to office people who remember President Arthur's term of office, and b) have substitutes in place.

It was in this very thread, or previous iterations back in 2016 someone, I know not who, made the post that what Trump doesn't understand is that exposure that the presidency will bring as well as his mindset of criminality and greed will cause him to ultimately lose the business. That always stuck with me. And it was 100% accurate.

My understanding is that in terms of officially held seats it was 47 D, 3 I, and 50 R, which meant Harris was a tiebreaker and there was effective D control because all the Is caucus with the Ds. I think we can reasonably assume that if Newson doesn't appoint an actual criminal or literal terrorist they will be seated, if potentially with some attempts at earned media from the rear end in a top hat caucus. It is possible the Republicans will use this to somehow try to take control of the Judiciary Committee which would slow down and potentially stop Biden from appointing more judges. "Making sure Republicans appoint the judges" is like Mission One for the GOP.

Currently Sentate is D 50, R49 and Kamala as a tie breaker when needed. Once Fienstein is replaced, it will be back to D 51, R49 and Kamala as a tie breaker when needed. The Independents only caucus with Democrats.
