My dad went pretty rapidly from "He doesn't seem to be running on all cylinders mentally" to "He's not allowed to drive anymore" to "He can't do anything on his own anymore or even talk" and then we had about 7 months of caring for him in that state. I lost my dad entirely suddenly a long time ago and way too young to be ready but loss is loss. And like you all I have these memories I can still hold onto 20 years later of walking to Yankee Stadium with him on a hot summer day or watching the Knicks with him on a winter night. I lost my dad about 15 years ago and very suddenly, too young to process it properly. A lot of my fondest memories are sports and baseball-related. The last thing I got to really do with my dad was that we went to the Marlins’ FanFest in 2012 in their new stadium. A few months later he was diagnosed with leukemia and then at the end of the year he passed away from complications from an infection after he finished his last round of chemo.

My dad got me into baseball and used to umpire my little league games (our umpires also sucked and couldn't manage a strike zone, we were just like the pros!). And he's still alive and from what I know very happy and content with his second family, spending my grandparent's inheritance lavishly on my step siblings. So if your dad is still alive and in your life, don't let that time go to waste. Dameius fucked around with this message at 21:44 on Oct 24, 2023 |

My dad died last year after fighting mesothelioma for about a year. We did the home hospice thing which while very taxing on everyone did allow him to see Judge hit 62. That was the last day he was lucid but I would give him playoff score updates until he died a week later. He coached both my brother’s and my teams growing up. No clue how he pulled that off with a full-time job but he did. He was also a trivia fount and I wish he were around to enjoy Immaculate Grid. Sorry for your loss Kevlar and everyone else. One of the hardest things in life is saying goodbye to someone you love.

Sydin posted:https://twitter.com/extrabaggs/status/1716868217938063550 I think that team has bigger problems than their manager, and the Giants know as much. I still wouldn't target Melvin, personally, but not because he didn't win with that roster. Also, he has had somewhat recent success with Oakland iirc. Tingler had similar issues in San Diego, and nothing in his time with the Twins, as bench coach, has led me to believe he wouldn't be an adequate manager. I think the Padres FO deserves most of the criticism. Moves like acquiring Hader (who had a track record of only pitching 1 inning at a time with Milwaukee, which led to a conflict this season), Machado (notorious rear end in a top hat), and Hosmer (I KNOW YOU KNOW HIS PROBLEMS) have created what appears to be a very difficult clubhouse. Chemistry can be overstated, but one of the things I like about the current Twins FO is they seem to pause before targeting someone who might disrupt the vibe. Pham, for example, would have been a natural fit for the Twins this deadline, but it doesn't look like they even kicked the tires on him. They're very analytically inclined, but they recognize that personality influences things day to day, and nobody wants to go to work with an rear end in a top hat. I believe this is a lesson they learned early on from Lance Lynn and Logan Morrison. Anyway, I agree it's weird to be so dead set on Melvin, but I wonder if that has more to do with Kapler and wanting to bring in someone established.

Chemistry can definitely be overstated but I also do not believe a team whose best and most prominent player is Manny Machado will ever win anything.
