I always got the impression of him being kind of a mushy moderate, but it's entirely possible I misread him as well. I wasn't paying as much attention to his cartoons before I started posting them this year, and his hatred for Trump has definitely been on full display since then. What I do know is that he's currently the artist on the regular comic strip Pluggers, which may give you some idea of his politics just generally if you've ever read that. (Just for the last few years, though; he's the third cartoonist do it, if I recall properly.)

We can probably put him in with the "Trump's REAL crime is making Republicans look foolish" box along with Ramirez, Bok, and, to a lesser extent, Payne. Portraying abortion (whether the medical procedure itself or the right to access it) as a particularly ugly Frankenstein's Monster certainly indicates he's not exactly in favor of it.

Speaking of a so-called God, it's time once more for We all saw this one already, but what if I were to tell you that, arguably, it might not be the most offensive thing he's going to post this week? Scroll on, gentle reader, scroll on. Thanks to Neito for explaining the cow with a red coat thing, because I'm not sure I ever would have figured that out on my own. And then just another "joke" about that same thing, I guess. Yeah, this is more or less how the religious right views it. Is Seymour evil again now? I've lost track. But, as we saw in strips as recently as a week ago, you personally are in charge of the White House. Like, not even just Jews in general, but this specific character. Let's not let that get in the way of stealing that shot from Independence Day, though. I'm sure that movie's just as good as I thought it was when saw it twenty-eight years ago. Here we go. Last week, when he posted the lyrics from the Rolling Stones song "Sympathy for the Devil" over a montage of Jew Voltron's rampage, he was implying that Jews were affiliated with Satan. Here, he's just having the Devil, a character in his comic who is literally Lucifer, the Prince of Darkness, say that the Jews are his chosen people. Not God's, you know, but actually the Serpent's. Hope that clears everything up for you! Is this better or worse than saying the Jews really did gently caress up Weimar Germany? I will leave this as an exercise for the reader. (The correct answer is: gently caress Tatsuya Ishida.) The title of this one is "My Chosen People 2," for the record. (The previous one just being My Chosen People.) Pettyfest

Well, it's the least concealed, so... Also, looking at that visual vomit again - it's extremely telling that the only thing that Tats shows in that comic re: IDF atrocities is all sexualised stuff. Men posing with women's lingerie and women dancing and twerking. I'm surprised he didn't give the male IDF soldiers pink hair. I know he has shown the violence elsewhere, but I find it very typical that he goes 'Well, I have one panel in this layout to show just how terrible the IDF is... Oh, I know! Icky sex stuff!'

It'd be like letting a man in the women's events at the Olympics (in that that's another thing that Tats is obsessed about, yet the only time it ever happened was Berlin '36, and the male cheater was a true believer Nazi selected to replace a Jewish athlete, and Tatsuya Ishida is also a true believer Nazi.)

Szarrukin posted:I need a lorepost on Sinfest, because I'm really confused what's going on here. Quick google says that it used to be normal webcomic than it turned into... this? Then about 10 years ago the creator had a 'come to Jesus' moment where he became a male ally feminist (which is to say, acknowledging that calling women bitches and going to strip clubs was problematic but being utterly unwilling to address societal issues or their own role in it). He then fell into Sex Work Exclusive Radical Feminism (SWERF) ideology, which holds that all form of SW is inherently misogynist and exploitive, as a form of penance for drawing objectifying comic strips. This got some pushback from feminists who don't hold that view. This escalated to the creator aligning with TERF (trans exclusive) ideology which, for reasons that would take too long to go into here, is basically feminist-coded fascism. From there it's a quick jump, skip, and hop to the antisemitism, homophobia, and racism of classic Fascism.

Szarrukin posted:I need a lorepost on Sinfest, because I'm really confused what's going on here. Quick google says that it used to be normal webcomic than it turned into... this? Real quick, unsourced overview: Sinfest was one of the late 90's "webcomics" darlings. At a time when the Internet was an open canvas where everyone decided they could paint on (or piss on) everything, a bunch of twenty-somethings who wanted to draw comics strips saw this as a place they could get around the ossified, nepotistic Newspaper Syndicates and actually get things published. 95% of these comics artists were completely untalented weirdos who somehow got hosted on Keenspot. 4% were amazing, outstanding, collosal fuckups who are left in legend as memes such as I II II L or phrases such as "jazz hands". And 1% were actually decent artists and decent joke tellers who would spend the next twenty years either setting up independent structures to make a living from their comics (see Kurtz, Scott; Arcade, Penny; and Burlew, Rich), find alternate ways into actual syndicates or network animation (see Millholland, Randy; and Jones-Quartey, Ian), or continue beating their head against the idea of actually having their webcomic whole cloth transfer into newspapers until somehow twenty-five years had passed and they had neither gotten into a syndicate nor had set up any sort of alternate method of income - Tatsuya Ishida. Sinfest started as a South Park wannabe with Calvin & Hobbes flavored characters. Jokes were rude and snarky frat-boy stuff about wanting to get laid but having no success, women being sluts but also not actually into sex with you, life being an existential crisis with no real meaning, and religion a joke being used by fools to control people. In part because of the "adult" (really, late teenager misanthropy and titillation by sexiness) humor and the main character being a complete Calvin rip-off, no syndicate was ever willing to take it in, and Ishida racked up 20+ (that was the number the last time I saw him mention it) rejections over the years. As we go into the Obama years, two things happen. First, other cartoonists who have been toiling in parallel start having success with aforementioned alternate paths, such as Penny Arcade with PAX, or Rich Burlew with Kickstarter, and the like - and Ishida refuses to change what he does or how he does it, other than to start a Patreon. Unfortunately, "Sinfest" had been dropping in audience at that point, in part because webcomics were a dying medium, and in part because Ishida maintained a boring adherence to a newspaper comics format. Second, Ishida goes head-long into the idea of Obama being a great leader who is going to transform the country, and Ishida explores his own liberalism (in the U.S., 'vaguely progressive' sense) and runs into the fact that he's trying to be a feminist while writing a comic strip whose roots are a celebration of frat-bro culture and all of the associated misogyny and toxic masculinity. The change in attitude drove away more audience than it gained, as people who liked the original frat-boyness of Sinfest didn't like the new 'preachy' version, and people who were drawn in by his new politics and discussions found plenty to publicly criticize in the older strips. Whether separate from that or because of that, I have no idea, but as Ishida explored his feminism he began moving more and more towards SWERFism - the idea that sex work is inherently explotiative of women and that porn and prostitution are to be banned and stopped at any cost. This is... not a popular position, and began losing him more audience and getting him more criticism, especially in Twitter, and Ishida responded largely by doubling down and being more supportive of SWERFs and then, because this is the way of all Internet SWERFs, supporting TERFs as well. By the mid-Trump years, he was ostenisbly still writing from a progressive viewpoint, but largely doing so to attack people who supported sex work and especially trans persons. By the late Trump years, and especially into 2021, Ishida joined the alt-right bandwagon, sneaking pepes and other references into his work. By 2022 - 2023 this had turned into unabashed support of January 6th rioters as good, righteous people (lured into doing terrible things by FBI plants) and that the truest, most honorable Americans were white rural, gun-toting Christian farmers. Leftists were all part of the pedophile network that Q had revealed, and their support of trans rights - in Ishida's writing - was entirely part of that pedophilia. In the last year, an undercurrent of vague anti-semitism has turned into outspoken, clear antisemitism, as Ishida is openly trying to be part of the same out-and-out nazi network that Stonetoss is. skeleton warrior fucked around with this message at 22:15 on Apr 14, 2024 |

Also the creator loves to introduce a gag character (Uncle Sam in a VOLTRON!), drop them for a bit, reintroduce them in a different context (Uncle Sam is a bad guy and the Voltron represents the US military!), drop them again, and then reintroduce them in other contexts that make the meaning absolutely impossible to understand (Uncle Sam got turned into a baby and the Voltron now represents the Israeli military!)

Someone once described Sinfest (which I always felt was more of a Bloom County ripoff than a Calvin and Hobbes ripoff) as "What happens when political cartoon characters go home at the end of the day", which has stuck in my head like a thorn ever since.

Ishida's SWERFism is likely tied to his underlying vilification of and association between sex and evil/sin/the devil, so that part of the transition was a pretty smooth one for him.
