These are so funny because if it's just a stupid pointless war that's been going on for a thousand years (it hasn't, but whatever), which we should have no part of, the obvious solution is to stop sending Israel billions of dollars worth of bombs, then the kids won't be distracted by their tax dollars funding a genocide.

if housing affordability is a key issue then what are the democrat party doing about it lol

between skyrocketing inflation, huge interest rates and the explosion of housing costs, there is no way I'd be able to afford to buy the home I'm in right now if I had to buy it today. The estimated value of my house is twice what I bought it for in 2016. My mortgage would literally be twice what it is now. The democrats aren't doing anything about that lol

And like I dont have an amazing house. it's a 2 bed 1 bath ranch built in 1950 lol poo poo I probably couldn't even afford to rent it

Your mortgage would be more than twice lol. I ran the numbers for my place, similar timeline, and due to the rates being substantially higher my mortgage would be about 3-3.5x lol.

The really stupid thing about the university protests and the admins' refusals is that the demand isn't even hard. It's not like they're asking the university to burn the money in its portfolio in a dumpster. Just invest it in literally anything else. The Columbia protest's website specifically names Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and a list of other companies represented in ETFs. Here's the thing though, and this is where I might be just confused or misreading things.

Someone put together a spreadsheet showing all of Columbia's investments they want the fund to divest from. The students are basically asking the university to move about $200,000* worth of stock, and 95% of it is direct stocks in three companies. It would be piss easy to do this. The whole endowment is $13 billion in assets with annual surpluses in the hundred million dollar range, the students are asking them to take 0.0015% of that and do something with it that isn't related to genocide, and the university is acting like the students want the college to dissolve.

* $173,265.46 total, $164,306.00 of which is in Apple, Microsoft, and Alphabet

tbf its literally illegal to boycott israel in this country so the universities are probably more worried about being sued than they are anything about the endowment itself

My understanding is that anti-BDS laws are written much more broadly than that. They'll effectively say that if you do anything in line with the BDS movement's divestment targets, that counts too. New York State has an executive order still on the books from 2016 that includes this:

this particular EO doesn't apply to Columbia U, I'm pretty sure, but if it did, divestment would be off the table.

What I will continue to not get about arguments like these is why they don't flip it on the head and go "hey if this election is so important why doesn't the admin just do what the people want and win in a landslide for free". How is the majority of people giving up their desires for what the minority wants an ideal form of "democracy" we're trying to preserve here?

Like this isn't even a matter where there's the plausible deniability of rotating villain thing where they can claim they're trying to but "don't have the votes", they're actively voting for the stuff their base is presently revolting over.

Speaking as a Liberal Arizona Democrat who thinks Israel is to blame for the Palestinian situation, they knowingly and intentionally violated University regulations and their agreed-upon Code of Conduct:

quote:

Prohibited Conduct
Failure to comply with the directions of university officials or agents, including law enforcement or security officers, acting in the good faith performance of their duties. This section is not intended to prohibit the lawful assertion of an individual’s Fifth Amendment right against self incrimination.

They were instructed to leave, and they refused. I support their message, but they decided to FAFO.

It is my hope that, on review, the university will drop the action against them, as they have done in other such circumstances. But to bash the school for following its established rules is misplaced, IMO.
