Twelve by Pies posted:I've heard the "2/3 of people in GB who died of the Delta variant were vaccinated" thing before and I'm curious where it came from. It could just be completely made up but usually they're misinterpreting something or skewing data. I think it's from Joe Rogan. https://www.reuters.com/article/factcheck-coronavirus-britain-idUSL1N2RP28I The short version is that vaccination rates are very high in GB, especially among the populations most at risk. If the vaccine is a placebo, then you'd expect the percentage of people who die from the Delta variant and are vaccinated to be roughly equal to the vaccination rate. If the vaccine is effective, then you'd expect the percentage of people who die from Delta and are vaccinated to be lower than the vaccination rate. And if it's harmful, you'd expect it to be higher. Here's a breakdown of vaccination rates by age group This chart breaks down the proportion of deaths by age group. Not exactly the same format but clearly we're mostly talking about 65+ when it comes to deaths So, if the percentage of people who die and are vaccinated is around 66%, and the percentage of people who are vaccinated is around 90% then that means that 90% of people are responsible for 66% of deaths, and the remaining 10% unvaccinated is responsible for the other 33% I'm not being particularly rigorous with the math here because I don't have the exact data, but I think the conclusion is clear.

Risk is a topic that can be a bit unintuitive, I guess I can understand why someone might throw up their hands and say "gently caress it, this is too hard." A lot of it involves rare events, and the mitigations aren't usually perfect, so it ends up being stuff like spending money to change the probability and severity of an event, and there can be additional side effects that create new risks, and so on. And since you rarely have a good picture of the actual probabilities involved, it can sometimes seem like a lot of time and energy is being spent on things that don't actually help, and sometimes that's actually the case.

I guess the new thing is people whining about how the FBI handles violent threats to school boards. I had someone sincerely insist that it isn't actually a crime to make violent threats because it's just words.

One of the "bullshit" degrees I remember people complaining about when I was a kid was Marine Biology. And sure, it makes sense if you think Marine Biology is 100% training dolphins to jump through hoops as a circus act. But in terms of practicality, do these people think that fish grow on trees or something?

The big problem with the GPA/money comparison is that, for the most part, there's a fairly even playing field for grades. You can get advantages by hiring tutors or by cheating, but you're still capped at 4.0. But if we got rid of the libraries and let students buy exclusive access to journals by spending GPA points, and then selling that access back to other students at a profit, we'd start to see a new phenomenon. Audrey has a GPA of 59.2, even though she just parties all the time, because her father also went to the school and she inherited his GPA and one of the dorm rooms (that you can live at in exchange for a portion of your GPA). Meanwhile our protagonist is proud of a GPA of 2.4, which she's earned by doing her own work, along with the work of several other students who were too busy partying.

I guess that's another part of it, even if this person did give 1 point of her GPA away to her friend, she'd still keep everything she learned, every professional connection, every friendship, etc. I think I missed the assumed premise that GPA is the product you're buying access to by paying tuition.

I've come to the realization that I'm woefully unqualified to research things outside a very narrow range of personal expertise. I've got a good number of heuristics to sniff out an obvious scam, so I'm not helpless, but how the hell am I going to figure out which microwave I should buy? I actually know how those work on a theoretical level, but that's not going to help one bit when it comes to reliability and quality of cooking. I can get some info out of reviews, but that only goes so far. Ultimately, I decided to shell out for a subscription to Consumer Reports. All my friends and coworkers know I have it, so I get to be the go-to guy when someone needs a new fridge. If I were to try and replicate their process, which honestly is probably lacking, I'd have to spend an absurd amount of money. And that's kind of the problem with "do your own research"

Vlaphor posted:There's a difference between "I'm a medical researcher who studied the possible side effects of the vaccine versus the benefits of being vaccinated" and "I Googled around until I found some unhinged nutcase who screamed about vaccines in a way that matches my personal beliefs" I guess to put it in simpler terms, people can't "do their own research" because they not only don't know how to do research, they don't even know what research is.

I feel like I'm at risk of underestimating the approach that's used in food service for labor costs, but it seems like it's a very simplified set of maxims/rules-of-thumb to make it accessible to people who would be overwhelmed by a more sophisticated approach. I remember talking to someone who used to work in that stuff and he was really stuck on the idea that labor costs should be a certain percentage, rather than just being a variable expense like rent, materials, insurance, etc.

They handed me a clearly fake million dollar bill and I immediately knew what it was, but I thanked them and they went on their way. Yep, it was one of those "HERE'S THE MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION: are you going to Heaven or Hell when you die?" At least they didn't leave it in place of a tip at a restaurant. I tossed it and didn't think much about it until about ten minutes later a customer came up and went "Hey I saw this laying on the shelf over there" and it was another one. I won't lie that one kind of annoyed me. I've got a few of these, I'll post em in a few minutes Anyways, my advice is to start collecting tracts, especially if you're in a situation where a fake tip like this would be emotionally painful.
