This sucks because I really like how The Wire used the 4:3 format, it was very street-photography and the 16:9 detracts from that.

It's not bad, but really obvious it was meant for SD down sampling.

It's like a lot of early blu-rays, passable but dead.

There's definitely a difference between a merely good br and a really sterling effort transfer, and I wish we'd see more of the latter.

Yeah, I mean, 3D is just two streams of frames being played at once so I'd expect a 3D Blu-Ray would just play one of them on a 2D tv.

It's crisper, but it's also a lot more basic. I looked at a still shot from the intro sequence between a classic era episode and a HD era episode, and the old one has so much more going on in the shot than the new one does. Maybe it didn't scale well or, more likely, they got lazy with the animation.

They bought nice new whips in Korea.

You're clearly not checking well enough. It's been on Blu-ray since last fall, just as part of a Spielberg boxset. And even if you didn't want the boxset, those things almost always get split up in a fairly short amount of time. And there have also been standalone region-free imports of Duel on Blu-ray from Universal - and again, even if you didn't want to import, an international release from the same rights holder as in the US is a drat good sign that it will come to the US soon as well.

So not

I think this might be the smuggest post I've ever seen in the blu-ray thread.

We all know they've got a spankin' transfer of A Clockwork Orange, so with any luck it's just a matter of time.

Is this something they did in other cities or was it just a New York/LA thing?

Well it was here in Seattle, so presumably multiple cities! Crossing my fingers.

It would be really neat if Warner could get the Kubrick estate to approve including the deleted premiere cut scenes for 2001 since they were located a few years ago. The Museum of Modern Art also has the workprint reel with the original pie fight ending to Dr. Strangelove.

I never really understood the point of those huge box sets unless you're really super hard-up on space or you're buying it as a gift for a burgeoning cinephile friend.
