Other games showcased at E3 that year: Half-Life and Ocarina of Time. Just for comparison when watching that turd of a trailer.

I downloaded Mark V since it supposedly has better co-op features, but I'm getting terrible performance. FPS dips into the 20's and mouse control is unresponsive and sluggish as hell. I'm launching Mark V with QSL (engine: mark_v). I'm sure it has to do with my laptop graphics being an Intel HD 515... However, QuakeSpasm works perfectly fine. Anyone else experienced lovely performance with Mark V and know how to fix it? EDIT: Switched to dx 9, runs smooth now! anatomi fucked around with this message at 10:55 on Feb 11, 2018 |

What are some good coop maps for Quake? We've played through all the campaigns and most of the AD stuff.

We've been getting back into Quake quite a bit lately, mostly co-op stuff. But lag and packet losses are bumming us out. We're all using Quakespasm or Mark V. Is there a magical engine or solution that'll fix multiplayer issues when playing stuff like AD? We're using Tunngle to set up a virtual LAN, but maybe it's worth it to sort out port forwarding?

c0burn posted:Please don't use Tunngle. Although this likely isn't causing your problems it's just unnecessary if you set it up correctly. Rocket Pan posted:This can be where part your problem is. Tunngle tries whatever it can to establish a connection, and this includes using relays. You are not guaranteed to have a direct connection to the host, and this can create way too much overhead.

c0burn posted:Let me know how it goes! So I tried QuakeSpasm Spiked instead, which was a lot more in line with my taste and seemed fairly stable. Couldn't configure port forwarding, so gave Zerotier and Evolve a try. Couldn't get Zerotier to work (we managed to create a network but couldn't find each others' games), but I'm gonna give it another go at some point. Evolve didn't work at all. So we're back to using Tunngle for now. Using QSS helped a lot, but games (especially AD) are still pretty laggy.

Managed to get ZeroTier working. Sort of. We can't find local games, but we can connect directly to each others' managed IP addresses (using the default ZT port 9993). It's incredibly nice to get away from Tunngle's lovely interface and annoying ads. And the connection is awesome! I've used my lovely old HTPC (only wired computer in the household) as a dedicated server and we (usually 4-5 players) have been knocking down AD maps with great abandon, with hardly any hiccups.

My brothers and I were diehard users of RFDG, but it became too much of a hassle when games started shipping without the ability to remap keys (defaulting to WASD), or when the implementation was half-assed (GUI not reflecting the changes, QTE events using the default mapping, etc). Edit: I'm old and slow, and sometimes my hand will slip back into the RFDG position.

Doom is one of those games, I guess? I find it hilarious that anyone's self-esteem would be so fragile that a tongue in cheek riffing (and suitable given the context) would them feel the sads. How dare this game shame me!!!

But there are games where on anything less than the highest difficulty the end is cut off, instead giving you a "you suck play the REAL game" screen, and those can gently caress right off. That's fair! The distinction is definitely important.

I'm not saying it's the best story every or anything, but it lends itself to the format pretty well. It's like they had an idea for a film anyway, and decided to adapt it to be a first-person shooter. I believe that Gore Verbinski was at one point set to make an adaption. Good fit, I think. Shame nothing came of it.

I'm adding an animal companion to ~~my retro FPS~~, but it's a cat not a dog. It won't follow you or listen to your commands. When you pet it there's a 50% risk it'll bite you and drain your health and ammo. Also, it'll give you toxoplasmosis in real life.

The hosed up thing about getting locked in that room with Hayden is that they let you shoot him, but he doesn't react. There's a frankly ridiculous amount of excellent single player content for Quake. A few campaign-ish picks (sorry for not providing links): Contract Revoked Rubicon 2 Quoth (2) Honey Copper Quake is a mod that makes some general improvements to a bunch of things, but also comes with a new and pretty good episode. I haven't played Quake 1.5, but some people love it. Most of the Map Jams are structured like mini campaigns — they usually have a theme and a central hub. Really can't go wrong with the Jams. Download the Quake Injector and go wild. anatomi fucked around with this message at 04:43 on Feb 9, 2020 |
