Excited to join the ranks of dog-havers tomorrow! House is prepped, supplies etc are acquired, and we just went to the local pet store with the kids so they could each pick out a toy for him. Much like having a child, I am sure that the experience is the same - you can plan, prep, read, etc all you want but until you’re in it you don’t really know what it’s like.

No puppy here, getting a 2 year old rescue Dane mix from the animal control shelter. Already housebroken but he is very rambunctious based on the meet and greets. We have a huge fenced in back yard and I enjoy trail running, so I am hoping to train him up to be a buddy I can take out into the woods for 3-5 miles.

Pongo is perfect and is an extremely good boy. He is a completely different dog from the shelter compared to even 4 hours later. He has handled every single situation like a champ, including going on a hike, meeting multiple neighbors, ignoring the next door dogs that are outside all day, and most importantly seeing my cat, going “yep, that’s a cat,” and ignoring her. Pepper is mad but she is getting less mad and braver more and more. devmd01 fucked around with this message at 21:41 on Mar 9, 2021 |

Fair enough. I’ll also discuss it with our vet at his first appointment next week. First order of business is likely to fatten him up, he is way too skinny. I think someone trained this dog, it responds exceptionally well to many basic commands.

I took Pongo to go get his nails trimmed, we visited the pet store, then went to Lowe’s after that. Completely perfect behavior the entire time, I am floored. We really found a fantastic dog and I am glad he has his forever home.

So I just discovered that Pongo knows how to give hugs already. If you invite him to jump up, then say “hugs,” he will squeeze with his forelegs and snuggle in closer. How did we get such a jackpot of a dog?!? Also, the sunlight makes it clear how incredibly lean and jacked he is, it’s a good thing he is so well mannered.

It’s me, I’m the dipshit dog owner. Made an entirely rookie mistake and left an entire bag of high-grade treats within reach of Pongo then left him unsupervised just long enough. No harm no foul, the poor guy is super skinny and needs to gain weight, but on his walk this morning the result was the most powerful feces I think I have ever encountered. They even stunk up the garage despite the bag being tightly tied and inside the trash can that usually contains even pretty smelly bags of trash.

Sab669 posted:So, what, like on top of the refrigerator? Did the vet or anyone say how much weight he should put on? I know they're a spindly breed but I thought he did look really thin in your photos. But both of my dogs definitely needed to put on a few pounds coming from the shelter so I figured yours is the same Just had the appointment and Pongo is a verified Good Boy. Talking it over with the vet, she wants us to bulk him up over the next 4-6 weeks and re-evaluate. Ideally the ribs won’t be visible but we can still feel them is the goal. We also discussed running short distances and she was cool with it. I am going to wait until he gets some weight on him before I start taking him with me though. As long as I pay close attention to him for any signs of distress, build up slowly, etc he should be fine. I took him for a short test run a couple of days ago and he did great. It’s like he he was happy that we were finally going a reasonable pace. Only tripped me once but that was kind of on me for leash management while crossing the road. I feel really sorry for whoever lost this dog back in November or earlier and didn’t have him chipped or find him at the shelter because he is just great.

Since it was another beautiful spring day, I took Pongo for a 4 mile hike just the two of us. He loved every minute of it and was great with everyone he met. It is honestly a rare occasion to walk him around people and someone not compliment me on how beautiful he is. I happen to agree; the white fur makes for a great scritch target!! If I need to stop for a second to tie my shoe or whatever, he keeps a watchful eye out while I am distracted. I also took him with me to meet my coworker’s dogs. He was a complete sweetie to all of them and still played fair given his size advantage. devmd01 fucked around with this message at 21:16 on Mar 21, 2021 |

We hit up the greenway by our neighborhood after dark for a three mile walk, it’s only a half a mile away. This was the best walk we have ever had together. He basically walked right next to me the entire time; such that I could just drape the leash across his back and he kept pace perfectly. I gave him lots of praise the entire time for being a very good boy.

Pongo has been gaining weight nicely, though part of that may be late night snack raids to his food bin in the pantry if we forget to close it. He is also very good at Wait, though I haven’t been able to get one on his nose yet.

I got incredibly lucky with Pongo and crate training as he is very good motivated. We only crate him if he is going to be alone in the house by himself for a while. At first he was super resistant to even go inside. After a week or two of leaving treats inside for him to find randomly as well as working on word association he started to go in willingly, and now I just have to say “Pongo, crate!” and he heads right in.

The boarding kennel that our friends recommended won’t take Pongo since he’s part pit, which I get, but he wouldn’t hurt a fly. Hell, he’s been attacked by another dog at the dog park and all Pongo wanted was to get away.

Very proud of Pongo on his walk tonight. I let him off-leash for a good half mile stretch of trail and he was under 100% voice control the entire time. I did hold his collar for a couple of bikes that passed for their comfort, but otherwise he stayed within ten feet of me. Pongo has filled out nicely with Wellness complete health. He has tons of energy, his coat is super shiny, and when he doesn’t get extra food helpings off the table or counter he has good, healthy poops. 6 cups a day and I can barely keep his ribs filled out, he’s so high energy.

He does a good job of staying relatively close up ahead and listens when I tell him to Wait for me or turn left/right at an intersection. Only had one instance where he spotted a squirrel down a hill and took off after it and had to deploy the recall special weapon The Ball (ball is life). I need to work on recall more but overall 10/10 good boy. Normally I would keep him leashed in case of other dogs, etc but the park was completely empty this morning.

We left Pongo with some friends overnight a month or so ago and he was the perfect house guest. Settled right in with their kids. She spotted him on the couch downstairs at one point and when they locked eyes, he just slowly, carefully got off without her saying a word.

Pongo got into a fight today that he didn’t start but definitely had the last word. We were waiting at my daughter’s bus stop this afternoon and talking with the neighbors right there, they love Pongo and give him treats. Another neighbor was walking by with her dog across the street so they called her over to give that dog one too. I kept Pongo basically inside their garage while they were down by the sidewalk for a minute and he behaved extremely well, no barking and stayed chill. In all of that, the lady somehow dropped/let go of her dog’s leash and it came over to pongo. At this point I’m holding on to Pongo’s collar for maximum control already, and the other dog just goes right in and takes a chomp of Pongo’s side. Keep in mind that Pongo is 82lbs of nothing but muscle and the other dog is a good 1/3 his size. My male neighbor came in to help get them separated and finally the other dog sklpped off Pongo’s skin, didn’t even break it. As the other dog was getting pulled away, Pongo whipped his head around and gave the other dog a single chomp on his right paw. Connected perfectly with his one good canine and drew a good amount of blood. My neighbors got bandages and rubbing alcohol and the bleeding finally stopped. It turns out that this dog apparently has a thing about attacking bigger dogs. Well what the hell, then I don’t feel sorry about it at all, you’re the one that let go of your dog. This just shows me just how drat good a boy Pongo really is, because I know what he can do with his jaws and could have seriously hosed their other dog up if he wanted to. That is the first time he has ever injured another dog, any other incidents he’s ever been involved in he has been the victim and didn’t retaliate. devmd01 fucked around with this message at 02:01 on Apr 21, 2022 |

Plastic shopping bag and the nearest outdoor trash can? ran over a baby bunny with my mower once, poor thing just froze and I didn’t see it with the thick grass. By the time I got back with the .22 to put it out of its misery it had already expired, thankfully. One of these days Pongo is gonna catch a rabbit in our yard, he got pretty close yesterday.

Ugh, time to make a vet appointment for Pongo and probably shell out for a hefty dental bill! Spotted what I’m 90% sure is a cavity in his upper right canine this evening. Part of the tooth was broken off before we got him so it doesn’t surprise me that a cavity has started to form.

The neighbor yards have the better spots for nesting, I let Pongo out to chase them out of the fenced in back yard all day long. They can slip under the fence no problem so I’m not worried about him getting one. All it takes is opening the door, saying “Pongo, bunny! Search!” and he’s off to find it. The vet got me in this morning to look at pongo’s teeth…and referred me to a dental specialist for root canal evaluation. He is only around four years old so I would rather not yank two of his canines if I can help if. devmd01 fucked around with this message at 01:49 on Aug 25, 2022 |

BAGS FLY AT NOON posted:The best part about crate training is when you get rid of the crates and your dogs just don’t destroy the house anymore. I’ve generally only left Pongo at home unsupervised for an hour or so while running errands around town and crated him otherwise. Did an experiment last Friday while we were out at the minor league ball game, no issues at all while left alone for a good 5+ hours. Then again he is an extremely good boy that has never touched a toy that wasn’t specifically given to him, the kids stuffed animals are safe.

very proud of Pongo today. Whenever we go for our morning walk I usually go somewhere with a reasonably secluded spot for off leash fetch, I can trust him to behave and not run off because Ball is Life. This morning a buck comes traipsing through the field about 100ft behind Pongo. Even though he saw the deer and was clearly getting Ideas, a stern “no” and getting him to chase the ball in the opposite direction did the trick. When we first got him, Pongo would have been off like a rocket.

Pongo was an extremely good boy at his appointment with a dental specialist for an evaluation yesterday. Two root canals for his broken canines, and a general cleaning while they’re there and he’s knocked out. Somehow quoted less than I expected, which is nice but even so it’s a chunk of change. I’m inclined to do it instead of just pulling the teeth, especially since his main form of exercise is fetch. He’s still relatively young and that would be a big quality of life change I think. Not that he couldn’t compensate and still catch stuff but it will be much harder.

Let Pongo out this morning at 5am as per usual and he took off towards the fence. Then he started barking. I threw on some sandals and headed out there, he was barking at a possum from like ten feet away. I suspect that because it looks cat-like and probably hissed like one that Pongo left it alone, he’s afraid of our cat lmao. Good boy.
