Let me complain about old games for a while.

FFVII. I'm in the final dungeon, I'm overpowered as gently caress. Everything dies to two hits from Cloud's sword. Even the fearsome-looking black dragon (it's a random encounter) goes down like a chump in a few more hits. After I've been trucking along nicely for a while, BAM, one of the dragons busts out Ultima. It does over 3k damage to all of my guys, which is A) more than my non-Cloud members have HP, and B) more damage than the goddamn Ultimate Weapon did with his ultima beam. I instantly lose, back to the start, gently caress you do it again.

What the gently caress is this, the return of WARMECH? There isn't even anything you can do about it besides having more levels/HP (because magic defense doesn't exist despite the game saying it does and you can't guard or cover it), and I'm already overleveled for the area. Of course now I'll just run from them, but christ. That caught me more than a little by surprise. I suppose that might have been the point, but in that case it was a really lovely point.

"Nothing you can do but more levels/HP" is a false reputation a lot of RPGs get from people who don't understand battle systems.

The dragon counters magical attacks with Ultima sometimes. Don't cast offensive magic if you can't survive it. :ms: Of course you don't know this the first time through but the immediate reaction should not be "welp guess I need to grind this is bullshit!" it's "why did that happen?" You can also mitigate the damage with MBarrier, Sadness or Hero Drinks or just Manipulate the dragon or something.

I was sold the moment I figured out you could do crazy mishmashes of jobs and customize dressup colors on top of that. There's nothing quite like having your job loadout be red mage with a huge fuckoff lance and counterblow because why not, a dedicated shinkicker, and colorblind power ranger mage. Also wearing shades on each one of them.

Dissidia is cool as hell and Duodecim added more cool as hell moves and characters but the assist system is perhaps the worst addition I've seen to a direct upgrade type sequel. Anything over 20 frames becomes completely unusable when the opponent can just own you from half the battlefield away with a brave assist.

If Arcade fixes that and the aerial dominance I will love it so much.

Alright, thanks for the tip. Yeah I kinda just didn't bother with the grid for a while and ended up slotting in the first ~10 levels for each character simultaneously, and I noticed it left me with only 3 Ability Spheres left vs a dozen or more of all the other Spheres, so it got me wondering if I was gonna run into a shortage of each eventually. I guess I'll just pick up the Extract Ability one just in case, and leave the others then.

Don't use it on bosses or it'll overwrite rare sphere type drops, IIRC anyway

Okay so for FFX, the stat spheres you get to slot into empty slots in the sphere grid, should I just dump these down with abandon now for the good characters or should I hold on to them for something or other?

Just do whatever. Anything worth seeing in the game doesn't need minmaxing.

Saying "but you can play FF12 manually!" is useless because the game was made taking the automation into account. Enemies are gigantic sacks of HP and no one would make it out of the first five hours of the game without gambits if they had to inpout every attack.

I mainly hate Necron now because of his mechanics. "Necron" only has one or maybe two moves, everything else is some invisible, unbeatable enemy which means Necron can get three or four turns in a row?? I'll never forget getting nailed with Grand Cross and Meteor back-to-back.

Necron has an amount of ATB bars corresponding to your number of living party members. In the base game they all have a certain part of his moveset they use, #1 mostly spams Blue Shockwave.

How is issuing commands a huge chore?

Thanks to the automation the combat time scale of the battles is larger than in any of the games before 12. Gambits are there to mask the fact that a boss battle might take 50-100 rounds of combat and if you try to go deep manual that is a lot of effort.

i'll never understand people thinking 13-2 is good either. game's so easy that you really can just auto-attack forever and you'll win

It's not a battles game (with a small handful of exceptions). It has cool looking time travel with someone screaming paradox every five minutes, a fairly satisfying monster gathering/dressup system and an extradimensional casino where you play a poker game featuring a spinning 13-hour clock. Also you are constantly told that time travel has horrible consequences and while you're expecting all of that to amount to nothing like 13-1's big hyped up dilemma it turns out, in every ending, that your time travel has horrible consequences. It's not great but it does enough right to be good.

My younger cousin was once telling me how hard a time he was having against some boss in the middle of Kingdom Hearts 2 a few years after it came out, and asked me if I could help him get past it. Well, I pick up the controller and go in the menu to see how he's got things set up, and am immediately bombarded by every single tutorial the game can throw at me, because he not once opened up the menu to change anything and probably didn't know it existed.

"You know this isn't just an action game, right?"

Somehow managing to not press the menu button in the first ten hours of a game is a whole new level of impressive

I'm sure it's been pointed out multiple times in this very long thread, but I'll give a strong recommendation to the LFT romhack, which does have a WotL translation patch if you want to put that on too. LFT is not one of those dumb hardmode things, it's a very good balance patch that makes every class useful, including monsters (which also means monsters are much more dangerous when you're fighting them). In terms of difficulty, I'm not sure it makes the entire game any harder in the end, but it makes the initial climb a bit steeper, just because the random encounters are so much more dangerous. But they give everyone innate Gain JP Up and lowered the JP costs of just about everything.

I worked on the team for this and I'm glad it's still making the rounds years later. The basic idea was to make it so there are no trap options - you can use/build what you think is cool and it'll work, including monsters (and without spending years of your life to do so). Also there's more enemy formation variety so it's not all knights all the time.

Combat in FFXIII is upper tier for the franchise, and its difficulty pacing is the best in the franchise, while everything else is basically bottom tier. How this nets out for you as an overall package is going to determine how you feel about the game. As a person who skips any cutscene offered and hates playing "find the NPC you need to talk to to progress the game" 13 was basically perfection for me as far as JRPGs go, but if you're here for like "A sensible story" and "explorable towns" you're not gonna have a good time.

Pretty heavy YMMV on the pacing thing too, for some insane reason you don't even get paradigms until a fair chunk into the game, during which your options are "attack" "lol you actually used grenade" and "potion". The combat is reasonably well designed when it gets going but doesn't lend itself to customization so once you've seen it that's it.

Also the final boss has an instant death attack (not a "you hosed up" timer) in a game where you can't get ID immunity
