So today online Ur-Dragon was in its grace period and I tried to kill him. The first time I tried I was way under prepared and didn't do anything to him before he flew away. I got one more try in before the period was over, and this time I had 32 conqueror/demon peripats and level 200/87 pawns my friends had (I'm only 71). The dragon only had two hearts and a sliver of health (my understanding is that during the grace period the dragon always has the sliver of health divided among a random number of hearts), and even with all that stuff I could barely take one heart out before he left. He must have a ton of health, or I am way under-leveled, or both.

You're right about him having a ton of health. Whenever it enters grace, it can still spawn with plenty of health. Even in the grace period, you should be maxed out or near it in addition to exploiting the hell out of your strengths and its weaknesses. Some classes are simply unable to do much to it, no matter what.

DRAGON'S DOGMA

HOW NOT TO BE A PAEDOPHILE

WALKTHROUGH AND FAQ

INTRO

Dragon's Dogma is a fun game where you get to kill a lot of cool monsters and then sometime during the end-game you may be shoehorned into a romantic relationship with a child. If fighting against cool monsters sounds like fun, but you would rather not be shoehorned into a romantic relationship with, say, a child who by game lore is supposed to be 14 years old because that is the age of consent in Japan or whatever, but actually looks and act like 10-12, as if 14 wasn't hosed up enough, then this walk-through is for you.

WHAT?

Dragon's Dogma has an objectively dull romance system which picks a romantic interest for your character sometime during the end-game. This pick is based solely on whichever NPC has the highest affinity for you, with basically every single non-hostile NPC in the entire gameworld being eligible, including children. Affinity is raised by either giving someone a gift or by completing quests, neither of these actions are inherently romantic in nature and you might just be surprised that a side-quest where you help a powerful merchant babysit his child for a few hours, playing a game of hide and seek and catch, is considered as the player showing romantic interest in a child. Rightfully ignoring the romance system entirely, a romantic interest will still be chosen, and a relatively small pool of central quest givers and NPCs with multiple side-quests related to them, will most likely be chosen as the unavoidable romantic interest, at least two of these characters, being children.

HOW TO AVOID YOUR UNAVOIDABLE ROMANTIC INTEREST BEING ONE OF THE CHILD-CHARACTERS

Do not give any kind of gift to a child-character, ever. Make any one non-child NPC in the game like you to the point where they start blushing when you see them, most easily done by completing a bunch of Core and Side-quests for a central character. The items which are suitable for gifting will also state in their item description who favours them, so simply give these to appropriate non-child characters: Congratulations you will now probably not be shoe-horned into having a child as your romantic interest.

Q: The possibility of the romance system selecting a child to be the romantic interest of the player character is an unintended oversight of the romance system.

A: No. At least two children which are able to become the PCs romantic interest have unique lines that only appears in this situation.

Q: In some countries the age of legal consent is lower than 21, 18, 16, 14, or whatever, and is even completely absent in some cultures.

A: hosed up if true.

Q: Caring about the possibility of romancing a bunch of pixels sounds pretty SJW tumbleresque, doesn't it?

A: Idiot bitch retard human being friend of the family.

Q: If I would rather not have my PC waking up in his bed with a child hovering above him, are there any particular NPC who I should raise the affinity of instead of the child NPCs?

A: Here is a handy list of reasonable non-children to befriend.

Blondeknight: Pros: Pretty and clearly of age, his preferred gift is pies which are cheap and plentiful.

Ladyknight: Pros: Pretty and clearly of age. She has lot of core and side quests available so she will probably end up liking you even if you ignore her completely outside of quests. The same goes for nearly every single female NPC in the entire game-world who takes directly part in any single quest.

Madeline: Pros: Uh-huh-huh-huh. Uh-huh-huh-huh-huh. Is not a child. Is a merchant. Cons: Everything else.

Every single merchant: Pro: Merchants are the only characters that it is really worthwhile to raise the affinity of. Raising the affinity of whichever one sells the best gear for your class is especially nice. CONS: Some of the merchants are married couples and you may feel like a jerk by breaking them up.

Banditmaleguy: Pros: Sort of maybe helpful in a side-quest or two and is easily impressed by skulls, which are plentiful and cheap trash items that he loves. Is most definitely not a child. Cons: Located a bit out of the way.

Banditfemale: Same as above, but is a bother to deal with if your PC is male and especially if he has a beard, as you'll have to wear a disguise (a pretty dress) and/or lose your beard temporarily and may become involved in a questline that is more problematic than the ending to the original Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.

Just about every single throwaway character in the entire game-world: Pros: Any random, throwaway male NPC is easily impressed by being gifted fish and meats, as a man's heart is best reached through his stomach, and any female NPC is easily wooed by gifting her flowers, as bitches loves flowers. Cons: You'll probably never be able to find these characters more than once as they are completely forgettable, but you wont have any good reason to want to either.

Q: Selene is not a child, but some kind of magical creature, probably, but she is old for sure, and extremely sexy with her after 2000 years of life on this gay earth still-developing breasts, pig tails haircut and completely demure, submissive personality.

A: If it walks like a child, talks like a child and looks like a child, please try not to gently caress it.

It's easy to wind up with Symone if you abuse gifts to get an easy Golden Idol. Tempting, but not worth it. The only way to set her straight after that is to throw that little trust fund baby down a flight of stairs or two, which are conveniently located behind her house.

Here is the secret. If you want to do cool magic things, you shouldn't play a mage. They have the most boring magic. Go to an advanced or hybrid class to get cool magic.

Sometimes it does become a situation where you keep jumping around and cancelling out a spell because you keep getting followed, but there are a lot of neat spells outside of what mages can do.

MKs and MAs each have their own special debuff they can cast off of staves (Sleep and Curse respectively, if I remember right). All they had to do was trade away the ability to heal, and I mean, who needs healing, really? You'd be surprised just how many troublesome enemies just need to take a little nap.

Ironic Porn Rental posted:

I recently finished a playthrough and did the post game content. I was a bad rear end warrior or something, my pawn was a mage. No matter what her inclination was, she always seemed very underwhelming, hardly casted anything cool and was simply carried through the entire game by myself and the other pawns.

I've started the game over as I enjoyed the hell out of it, only this time I reversed the roles. I'm the mage, she being a strider. Holy gently caress is magic using boring, but her? She has become infinitely better at everything. She uses bow skills, climbs hydras, does everything so right I sometimes forget she is AI. Strider pawns loving own.

Mage pawns can be finnicky, especially if you try sticking them with a bunch of cool-looking offensive spells, because deep in their little mage pawn hearts, all they want to do is heal and buff and run around until someone else needs healing and buffing. I had similar problems that you did, until I stuck a bunch of utility spells and a single piddly High Levin on her and set her up with Utilitarian/Medicant. She didn't cast anything much cooler than High Grapnel or High Levin, but the party never went without enchantments, maxed health or Spellscreen. Eventually gave her a gold-rarified Legion's Might and called it a day.

It's almost worth it just for the Eternal Ferrystone (which you get for importing your vanilla save into Dark Arisen) and added fast travel spots alone. The fixes in menus and crafting are nice and intuitive. Letting you pick and choose between DLC items at the Black Cat, and throwing all the challenge board quests into the mix without having to shell out for two dozen different DLCs is good. Bitterblack Isle is awesome all around. Assassin caught a nerf or two, but it's not really a big deal.

So, yes, definitely worth it.

I had a question. I was able to get through the main game without too much trouble but whenever I try doing the Dark Arisen content, I get absolutely crushed.

I've only done two playthroughs and both of them were me mostly playing warrior with a little bit of strider or mage until I could access the Mystic Knight vocation, which I then stuck with for the rest of the game.

Should I have been playing lots of different vocations to get the most out of my stats and augmentations? Or do I just need to level up more in post-game content before visiting Bitterblack Isle?

Dipping into other vocations for the augments is DEFINITELY recommended. Mystic Knight can be tricky if you try playing it aggressively, but they are very useful! Ripostes, buffs and area denial are MK bread and butter.

And like 2house said, BBI is just difficult in general. If you feel like you're simply dying too much, try hanging around the Everfall for levels/lifestones/gear or doing some offline Ur-Dragon runs to get your gear up to Dragonforged in addition to getting a few exceptional Holy-enchanted weapons. They make a world of difference.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, but starting a new character just to get me RC seems a bit overkill, but I'll try the other suggestions as I go along. I have not actually visited BBI yet so I guess now's a good time. Other than the Secret of Metamorphosis, anything else of note to grab from the Rift Shop?

A lot of it is stuff you can get by doing the notice board quests; they only throw it in there in case you REALLY need a second set of Solar Armor or Anneled Pale or whatever. The glasses are for cosplay, as are the goofy hair and skin dyes (these might have been packed in with the game already, I don't know).

Really the only other thing I can think of worth getting are the inclination elixirs, which are handy for setting or resetting pawn behavior. Double-check your pawn's inclinations every 50 hours or so to make sure they didn't pick up any bad habits, and juice 'em up accordingly.

EDIT: I know it's a bad word, but really, whether you're 360 or PS3, the pawnlist in the 4chan Dragon's Dogma megathread gets regularly checked out. After posting there I get a rent or two every week. Being active in the thread will probably net you a few more.

Really, after Secret of Metamorphosis and pawn behavioural therapy, the only use RC have is purifying BBI loot.

Anyway, I had a couple of questions. Is there an inclination that makes Shield and Greatsword Pawns more likely to use their spring board skills?

Utilitarians will use these kinds of support skills more often without training, but on the other hand utilitarian is best left to Strider and Mage pawns. titties has the right idea by simply modeling the behavior a few times successfully; your pawn will get it eventually.

And is it a bad idea to bring two magic based Pawns?

Two properly-raised Sorcs will dual cast, which is a truly magical thing. A triple Bolide will annihilate any group less than a goreclops. A Sorc and a support Mage can buff and support each other, but they'll run into trouble with big bruisin' baddies.

Finally, what's the best bow-skills for an Assassin?

Lyncean Sight is great. I've had mixed success with Puncture Dart: it's great for mobs and occasional dudes with shields but it is wasted on singular monsters. Fivefold and Mighty Bend are both bread and butter skills. Sadly, by the time you get around to Plegic Arrow, it stops being very useful.

I've been on a sword and shield kick lately, and I'm interested in starting a new game with the intention of being a fighter in the end game with decent damage (not full on tank). Does anyone have advice for how to build this character? I was thinking of starting as a mage and then leveling sorcerer to level 20 or 25 to get a sizable amount of magic defense to start. Then I would switch to assassin for 10-20 levels for a physical attack and stamina boost and then finally to fighter for the more balanced attack and defense growth. Am I a complete idiot?

If this idea is remotely feasible, what abilities would you recommend for a high level fighter?

I backtracked through a lot of the thread and could not find this information. I'm sorry if this has been covered before.

Edit: Upon further reflection, I think I'll start as a fighter and then make sure to get those levels of sorcerer. No sense in doubling up on magic classes.

If you mean endgame as in ~lvl 50 Ready To Fight Griggs endgame, then it's absolutely feasible. I have no idea why you want to dump so much into blue classes if you're aiming to be sword and board. You could level Magick Archer or Mystic Knight to focus on MDef while not losing out so much on physical growth, or if you're willing to loot around you could pick up some rings that slow down burning/thundershock/freezing/whatever proc-ing and just focus on those Assassin and Warrior levels without worrying about MDef.

If you're looking for straight physical chutzpa augments: Vehemence (Fighter), Ferocity, Proficiency, and Clout (Warrior) are all great. Bloodlust, Autonomy, and Exhiliration can boost Strength under certain circumstances. If you get hit a lot, you'll want Bastion (for Def) and Awareness (MDef).

So I've decided to pick this game back up, and I want to give Mystic Knight a proper go. I'm torn between two builds; in both of them I wanted a minimum of 500 Attack so I could still dish out a respectable amount of pain, but the main difference is what happens after L100, either 100 levels in Sorcerer or 100 levels in MK. I'm leaning towards the MK one, simply because MK is the end goal for the build, and gently caress dicking around in a class I don't want to play for 100 levels, but am I going to miss that ~800 Stam and ~130 Magick?
code:
Magick-Heavy Superoffense

HP: 3450
Stam: 3768
Att: 500
Mag: 683
Def: 240
MDef: 413

Tankier, More Balanced Offense

HP: 3800
Stam: 2968
Att: 500
Mag: 558
Def: 315
MDef: 513

You'll miss the extra Stamina when you're running around throwing down GC's and Sigils and keeping the party enchanted AND trying to get between enemies and your casters, riposting attackers the whole time. I'm spoiled by playing stamina-lite classes like MA and Ranger, because whenever I give MK a go, and I'm right around 3000 too, I'm ALWAYS running out mid-fight. That's my two cents, anyway. The ~130 Mag won't make or break your build.

HP: 3895
Stam: 4115

Once in BBI 2.0 my own pawn and a buddy's lvl. 200 sorc had been scythed before heading into Tower of Treasons Repaid (the long, vertical room with the poison river right before the room with Vanilla Ice), leaving me, a Magick Archer, and another friend's fresh alt Strider pawn who was tagging along soaking up RC and enemy knowledge. As you might know, the Tower is filled with skeleton brutes and succubi to harass you through the entire descent but more importantly: this is the other place a Metal Golem spawns in the game, and you absolutely NEED to have some kind of ranged, physical weapon in order to break the medallions and do any sort of damage to the golem. The pawn, being a baby, is only useful for screaming despair and being lasered to death and will not shoot a goddamned thing. I can't reach half of the medallions with my sweet Framae Blades.

So, 15 minutes of desperate jumping and hiding later, I get the idea to use dragonspit to break the medallions and. by god, IT WORKS. Or it would've worked if this wasn't the very first time I ever used dragonspit and I hadn't missed a bunch, leaving just ONE LAST medallion safe and snug near a pile of rocks. So, while the golem is busy sodomizing my only friend, I make a mad dash behind him to grab an explosive barrel and I very-gingerly nudge it into position and start praying. Then I shoot it with an explosive rivet, damaging that loving medallion to right around half health. I make for another barrel but I get stomped on and my precious barrel becomes dust. I grab literally the last barrel and run for my life. I make it, place it with the delicacy of a mother laying her swaddled newborn down to sleep, and shoot the poo poo out of it, finally shattering the medallion and ending the golem's life.

I don't remember what happened after that except I was laughing in real life and we just barely pulled our asses out of the fire. Luckily the next room has a rift stone very early on, but I'll be damned if I didn't think it was The End.

Those bow skills are just fine, but I'd pack Magick Rebalancer on your daggers for extra oomph when you need it, in lieu of scarfing down periapts. Mag boosting augs are definitely ideal, especially if you came into the class from a mostly Red or Yellow class background.

As is the usual case, make sure you're always keeping your weapon(s) top-of-the-line and upgraded. Everfall-tier weapons at the very least, and there's no reason to not have it 3-starred, if not dragonforged if you're in the post-game/NG+. The last third of BBI can be a real motherfucker, but its all enemies you'll be running into for essentially the rest of the game.

And speaking of enemies, make sure you're hitting dudes where it hurts. Sometimes well-meaning Mages will enchant you with something useless.

Lastly, I'm pretty sure you've posted here a lot and have your Arisen at a decent level, but for posterity: going into the last third of BBI sub-lvl. 70 or so is suicide.

Do yall not use the Reset dagger move? I used that so much while dodge rolling all over the place for like the whole game. I can't imagine going without it.

Instant Reset is a literal life saver if you're quick with it, and shines through the most when you're in the sewers, as you can Reset out of the "put away lantern" and "relight lantern" animations.

Framae Blades are the best daggers.

I took all of the weapon stats from http://dragonsdogma.wikia.com and dumped them into a spreadsheet. All stats are dragonforged. If you want to know what the silver and gold stats are, you'll have to look them up. click the name of the weapon

The Duke was as well. I dont recall if the old witch beat her dragon but she was able to pass along something to her pawn like what you do at the end of the game to your own pawn. Clearly many epople that had been Arisen are alive during the game but they hint that there's a reason the Duke doesn't let Pawns near him. My impression is that after they confront the dragon (or finally decide not to) the next arisen cycle starts.

I've started exploring Bitterblack Isle. I'm level 40, and doing ok so far.
I had a nice jump when I discovered that Dark Souls isn't the only game with mimic chests.

I only got so far as the first sewer level, right before the Beholder boss, at around the same level as you because between the mimics (which scared the poo poo out of me the first time too!) and the Elder Ogres and everyone splashing around soaking their lanterns, I just couldn't even pretend to be equal to the challenge anymore.

Came back at 100+ and wiped the place but still, goddamn.

Level 40 is perfectly fine for BBI, so long as the player remembers to buff their attack power with periapts. On my first playthrough of Dragon's Dogma, I got started on Bitterblack Isle at a much lower level than 40.

I started at 15, got as far as the Wargs, then turned around and left because gently caress that, man. We barely survived.

Are the Badge of Vows useful for anything, or can I sell them?

If you hold on to them you can turn them in every NG cycle for a massive RC and EXP payoff without the hassle of hunting them all down. There are simpler ways to make money if you're at the endgame.

Seems ok although aiming for 200 specifically might be a mistake unless you grind pretty hard with double xp items. Might want to split the str/mag growth already before lvl 101, overall the BBI weapons buff your stats so massively that unequipped stats don't matter too much.

That's always been my problem with builds that change class at 200. Once you hit that number you've probably finished the game two or three times over. I'm at NG+++ and have killed Daimon 2.0 a half dozen times but am only ~170. Couldn't imagine grinding out levels that long as a class I had no interest in playing.

Here's a pastebin of some quick guides that definitely helped me when I was training up a kick-rear end pawn. I didn't really know what I was doing before that, either.
