Going to be jumping in on this with a buddy who got in on the Kickstarter. He'll be playing a "bad guy" faction, he said, so I'll take Dorfs. I have some store credit haning about in my LGS. Is the Dwarf Battaltion box a good buy? (This is the one I'm looking at: http://www.miniaturemarket.com/kings-of-war-dwarf-battalion-85-2-wm-newarrival.html)

Mine came today and it's missing a good half the models that were supposed to be in it, and I don't know if that was the fault of Mantic or US customs.

Nothing is assembled. :(

That's a real shame. It's not like Hex bases are real common in wargames, and places like Dragon Forge don't make them (yet, I guess!)

Amen. I've found with KoW, WP, and Dreadball that on the surfacw it looks like a GW rip, but underneath is a nice and smooth system that only mocks GW in form but not function.

I recommend trying at least Dreadball out. Deadzone is a stupid good deal even if it's just for the terrain.

I warn you, the terrain is not as snap-together/ lego like as I thought. I tried to build a simple 2x3 1 story building Saturday. I am still on it.

I can't tell if I use too many or too few connectors. They rarely fit nicely. I scrounged around and found a screwdriver bit that fits to help make the fit happier. I still like the game and don't want to say anything negative about Mantic, but jeez this has been frustrating. This has been the most trying build in my 7 years of minis gaming.

DZ is pretty complete. The box set is everything you need*. There's a theme campaign soon, I believe, and apart from boosters, other factions, scenery, and the little things like tokens, you can play almost indefinitely.

God knows you'll buy new stuff once you play. Then play 4-mat games. Then sweeping campaigns.

You only stop when you either die or your friends stop talking to you after a drunken brawl over Frag weapons.

Pretty much. you and your opponent can determine what's "inside" beforehand, but mechaniically, if there something in it, there's cover.

At first, that wierded me out. I mean, if cover's so frequent, why not make open squares get a penalty and make the cover bonus the standard, right?

Then you realize Blaze Away actually hurts your saves when you're in cover, and pin those motherfuckers to the ground before you toss a frag weapon in and *boop* now they pinned or suppressed, and may in an open square!

GO TIME.

Here's a blurb on the factions and how I have come to see them played:

Enforcers

Very focused on taking a point and securing it. Most of your missions will revolve around securing objectives, and it's a good thing, since you have the best Survive states army wide. The basic trooper doesn't seem to do much else particularly well, but your specialists are excellent in their field. Their Sniper is the best Sniper currently in the game, the Engineer brings the frankly brutal Sentry Guns, and the Rocket Luancher Enforcer looks at a square to declares it "hosed." The Enforcer Captain is expensive, yes, but there are only two or three models that are hardier in the game. He's also one of the two best Leaders in the game. I suggest these guys if you like withstanding enemy fire, and being able to identify and pick off key models from your opponent's forces.

Plague

The other army in the starter, Plague are mean and vicious. Some have said that the extra random mutations can work against you, but honestly, that's why you bring a lousy 3 point Plague Hound with you. Most of your missions are Infiltrate, meaning you have to move from your deployment zone to your opponent's and off the board. This means to be successful, entrenched combat is not what you want. Many of your models are Fast, so they can quickly move about the board, and they also have access to two very solid Frag weapons, which are useful in Supressing and Pinning models so that you can sneak some infected past to score some scenario points. The Plague can be tempted to skew their lists, but if they draw missions that aren't suited to that skew, they can feel very hampered. Your Leader, the Stage 1A, is the other best leader in the game. It's a shame that he is afflicted by Slow. Granted, he will destroy anything he's in melee with, but getting him there can prove a challenge. I suggest Plague if you like playing bigger model-counts, and like being a bit sneaky and underhanded.

Rebels

The Rebs are by far the most varied force, but their issue is they rely on the equipment purchases a lot. Many of your missions revolve around scavenging item crates and getting that equipment off the board. Much like the Plague, they do not want to stand around for drug-out slugfest. They want to get in, get their things, and get out. This faction is a greater challenege to play, in that every move and every action matters more, as they typically don't bring the numbers the Plague can, the raw survivability the Enforcers can, or the combat prowess the Marauders can. I would hesitate letting first-time wargamers play this, mainly because the faction doesn't want to sit there and shoot back, and the ease that some of these models can get picked off can make it seem like they are very underpowered. However, Rebs offer some very interesting tactical choices, and they can bring Tetratons, which are hands down some of the beefiest, toughest, "oh crap what I am going to do about that"-iest models in the game. A solid Armor value combined with Really Tough means even AP weapons can struggle to wound them. Rebs are very rewarding to tactically-oriented people who understand discretion is sometimes the better part of valor...but the rest of the time we should let a turtle punch them.

Marauders

Marauders are a really solid force. This faction is the one I have the most experience with, because once I saw Fu Dogs with chainsaws in their mouths (and sometimes bombs!) and I was sold. The Marauders are a slightly goofier force, given their armored suit with the Gun Crazy rule, but overall can really do well using Blaze Away and combined shots to coordinate attacks. In my area, the Goblin Sniper and Non-Bomb Dogs are the mascots of the force, as they have racked up some impressive kills, and the dogs turned into poster children for "why tripling sucks." Most missions are about securing one of the three objective markers, but there are a fair number of "just kill stuff" missions in there as well. I recommend Marauders for players who like the idea of Enforcers, but want something a bit more flexible.

No to either, unfortunately. However, as a result, there are lots of places going over terrain effects right now, like hairspray weathering and the like.

Frankly, I've always been of the opinion that terrain need to only look OK, not great. Great terrain is super nice, of course, but basically so long as it doesn't look like an eyesore next to a painted force, it's doing it's job.
