Ranges are their own special place of idiocy because people can kill you on them.

My company ran a M9 range for the brigade this Summer and I had to yell at some Major a few times because he nearly pointed his loaded pistol sideways while loading/unloading. Good job almost flagging like 10 other people with a loaded weapon. Also the staggering number of people who couldn't operate them before they got to the range scared me when I was rodding people on. Half the Army probably has personally owned handguns, I guess these must've been the half that doesn't.

On the tripping with grenades thing, I did that when we threw them in BCT since they were making us sprint from the bunkers to the pit. Almost fell over when I snagged my foot on the little wall in the front of the throwing position. Heh.

You drank hand sanitizer? That might be worse than knowing someone used it as lube. :wtc:

Someone I went to AIT with claimed to drink floor stripper to get drunk in basic. It sounds outrageous but this person was a legit major alcoholic so I wouldn't doubt it.

On the subject of food we were allowed to eat candy from MREs however the other 3 platoons in my company had theirs confiscated by their respective DS. They watched us eat it every time we got MREs.

They end up running from the cops and wrecking. While Pvt. Idiot is in the passenger seat unconscious, Buckmaster crawled out of the wreckage and started jerking off. That's how the cops found him, it was in the police report.

so my understanding is that if you have a 3 year break in service you HAVE to go back to BCT. What happens to all those e-5s and e-6s that come back with their rank? do they just hang out as specialists until they're done or what?

For active duty it is. It's not for the Guard/Reserve. Probably because old prior service dudes would probably be like gently caress this if they had to do BCT or OSUT at 40 to reenlist into the RC.

A single BCT has a fuckload of expensive equipment. The Army's enormous budget has to go somewhere. Even here in the Guard, I can think of several individual vehicles worth over a million each, not to mention individual equipment. I mean it's not F-22 dollars but I wouldn't be surprised if a brigade as a whole had over a billion dollars worth of stuff.

While he was laid up in bed, still concussed, our platoon sergeant(who never went on convoys with us, for the record. Not once.) went to see him so he could NJP him for losing his NVGs during said IED strike. Lost a stripe for it. But he got a PH!

WTF? I know they're a sensitive item and all but one would think getting blown up would be a sufficient explanation for their loss. Maybe I'm naive about the military justice system but that seems like a case where you should turn down NJP and ask for a court martial or at least file an IG complaint.

We did some room clearing in some little MOUT site at Fort Jackson's uber hardcore BCT for an hour or two. I think the Army has some bigger problems if it ever came down to support units being asked to do room clearing. But I get the point of exposing everyone to basic infantry stuff just to know what it is although I would fully expect to die if ever tasked with it. Since basic the most I've done with weapons is qualify. I'm confident in my ability to operate and accurately fire my weapon and that's probably it.

Heh, last Summer we threw live ones which was much less lame than doing it in BCT. I think I was on that range for maybe 30 minutes if you don't include the lame practice grenade qualification course beforehand. Even if the boom is underwhelming, as a lovely thrower it's fairly terrifying.

I really want to see a CG or other RR shot in person. I can only imagine how they compare to live AT4s.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say there is no way you could get any significant portion of a Bofors round in a 203. I mean look at the length even if the diameter is the same.

Maybe if it were a M320 or similar GL where the barrel swings open to the side...

Pretty glad my job almost exclusively gets to work in one of these guys. I just need to figure out how to justify sleeping under a table or something instead of outside.

DRASH tents are cool as hell, heat and air conditioning. Wonder how many hundreds of thousands they cost though.

Flying_Crab
Apr 12, 2002

Yeah they're all modular including the lights, power distribution, etc. The bigger tent sections come on a trailer (obviously the ones with the ducts coming off of them) that has an on board generator as well as the heat/AC unit. Normally we don't use the built in generators though, instead using dedicated 15k or whatever units as you can see in the picture. Really neat stuff I think.
