So, I just now read about XCom: Enemy Within from the latest GameInformer, and it sounds awesome.

Any word on what all the changes for MP is going to be?

While I love the single player version, multiplayer was hella fun, too.

So, it looks like they've changed the movement outline to be more clear, good. It's kind of iffy in some places as it stands because everything's rounded, now you'll be able to clearly see the edges.

Also that there's a way to counter/find out where people using Ghost Armor are at without having to resort to looking at move-spaces.

I'm guessing that means "If you can get an Arc Thrower shot off", since I'm gonna go out on a limb here and assume they didn't add a dialog tree system to this game. Sounds like we can expect the equivalent of an early-game Ethereal battle to go with the early-game Battleship raid from Slingshot, granting a unique early Psionic soldier to go with your early Blaster Launcher. It'll probably a stage-wise battle where she'll periodically retreat and a wave of EXALT will need to be fought off.

I could see it working differently--not dialogue trees, but it could fold nicely into the EXALT Covert Op system, in that you have to track down the specific EXALT Cell that has Annette, and if you ignore it/don't find the right one in time, bad things happen

I don't know if Squadsights going to be as all powerful as it was before, though, what with them taking out critical hits on Squadsight. You might actually have a reason to take Snapshot now.

At least it's more of a choice than that for Gunslinger or drat Good Ground, which gets even more weight in it's favor with the undercover work now.

Who said they don't make boneheaded moves in classic?

That just happened on the first mission of my latest classic campaign.

To be honest, I thought I was gonna lose a guy at first--that sectoid charged into two separate overwatches and fired on my one health guy who was hiding behind a pillar, right in front of where my cursor is, that was destroyed instead.

Really, really odd that it moved there instead of behind the counter.

Edit: Welp, as I was alt-tabbing to post that, I was hit by this odd bug.

I tried to fix it in graphics options, but that just made the hud move even more off screen.

Looking at the wiki, some of the new items look really interesting. I especially like the Mimic Beacon,

quote:

An item which tossed similar to a grenade that emits a signal that tricks aliens into thinking it's human, drawing them towards it and away from any nearby player units; the beacon won't fool robotic or psionic aliens.

And Reaper Rounds might, depending on how cheap/early they're available may make heading for armor first more interesting,

quote:

Adds 20% to critical chance against organic targets. Doubles the weapon's range penalty. Only affects conventional weapons.

I would honestly love to see some kind of chryssalid spore grenade. Affects a wide area, sticks around for about 5 turns, if you don't get your squad the gently caress out of the way in like a turn or two they're infected and you have to either medkit them or finish the mission before they burst. It would force you to think about having to displace in the middle of a less-than-ideal situation, and it would bring back the idea of serious consequences to the late game.

Basically I wish XCOM had a couple more true dick moves up its sleeve once you get to plasma.

Eh, that would be too annoying to deal with. The Sectopod getting free overwatches and 50% damage resistance is kinda enough, I think.

Well, to be honest, I think we could see new custom weapons from mods down the line--there's gonna be more weapon models floating about because of EXALT. They have their own version of Laser Weapons, possibly even Plasma Weapons. Just takes a mod to adjust the stats.

I was typing up all the skills that had potential, but it turned into me writing 80% of the skills that aren't weapon-specific. Here's the weapon-specific ones I know of:
  • Fire Rocket
  • Shredder Rocket
  • Rocketeer
  • Squadsight
  • Snap Shot
  • Disabling Shot
  • In The Zone

Unsure about :
  • Suppression
  • Danger Zone - relies on suppression not being weapon-specific
  • Mayhem - bonus to suppression & area-effect abilities depends on how it's coded
  • Double Tap - Ability says "Allows both actions to be used for Standard Shot, Headshot or Disabling Shot, provided no turns were made. 1 turn cooldown". The specific nature of those listed skills could mean less synergy with other abilities
  • Smoke and Mirrors - requires Smoke Bomb to be of any use
  • Rifle Suppression - Well it'd be useless on a sniper or Heavy
  • Combat Drugs - requires Smoke Bomb to be of any use
  • Dense Smoke - requires Smoke Bomb to be of any use

If they relax the restrictions on class-specific weapons I could see it not being an issue. Doubt it though, they don't test these second wave options that much. Really hope they mess up and allow psi-abilities to appear :getin:

I don't think they'd add Danger Zone or Mayhem--I don't think they'd let you get Mayhem or Danger Zone, anything that requires you to have another ability wouldn't work because you might not have that ability.

Looking at gene mods, once EW hits, a Snap Shot sniper with drat Good Ground might actually be good with a few gene mods--Depth Perception and Boosted Muscle Fiber. Jump up onto a roof and you'd get +15 Aim, +5 Crit, and +10 Defense, more than enough to counter the Snap Shot penalty.

It could probably stand to have a small buff or two, though.

My question about Exalt is, how frequently do they do their actions? Like, are we looking at two covert ops a month? Three? One every two months? Assuming that the devs didn't space out the alien missions more to compensate for adding a new mission source, it might become necessary to have a couple standing squads, just so you have guys available for fighting Exalt while your alien-busting crew is in hospital from the last UFO crash.

Well, it's more determined by player agency, simply because it's not random, it's based on what EXALT Cells about or whether they're there at all or if they're exposed or not.

If you take initiative, do some intel scans and take out every cell as they come up and they won't be able to annoy you.

If you're asking how often EXALT Cells spawn, though, we don't know yet.

Depending on how EXALT is implemented I can see them being hugely debilitating depending on the timing of their attacks. Having EXALT make their entrance by resetting your Beam Weapons research right before the first terror mission lands would be a bullet-sweating moment.

From what I can gather from the previews, you'll get a warning cutscene when they first appear, and if you can keep on top of them, they should never be able to get off an attack on you--but the problem is keeping on top of them means intel scans, and intel scans cost cash.

I make a mad dash towards the other ladder to the roof and typically catch them off guard.

If you can't move a guy beyond your normal move zone, you'll be hit with a bug. Try switching back and forth with another guy, or going into firing mode and back out a few times to fix it.

As for why Bar's so popular, when you click on quick match, and there's not one available, it makes a new match for you--defaulting to the bar map.
