Kindna funny that for being such a cute, chill game everyone in pelican town is low key unhappy or depressed. And the farmer is canonically a weirdo who spies on folks from bushes and rummages around for peoples hidden porn stashes.

It's honestly not that far off from how it's like to live out in the middle of nowhere. When the town population is, at best, in the very low quadruple digits, everyone winds up knowing about everyone. That includes knowing about everyone's dirty laundry. Their lucky purple shorts, if you will. And when you live in a place where not a whole lot happens and opportunities are relatively sparse, people have a lot more time to dirty their laundry and then air it out.

I kinda dig it, to be honest. Stardew Valley is an optimistic game at its core, but it's not afraid to pull back the curtain on the whole "Idealized rural life" concept.

Evelyn and George have been around forever and have been together almost as long. If there is any bad blood between them, they're past the point of caring enough to act on it. Not that I get that vibe from them, George is just a crotchety old gently caress is all.

Emily is aspirational in a way. She's living her best life and doesn't give a drat what anybody thinks. So, basically the complete opposite of Clint lmao. I dunno about the whole crystals and aura thing, but she's into it and she owns that she's into it and I respect that.

I'm not patient enough, but you could theoretically decorate the entire town with them now.

Gold-trimmed shorts in the middle, I hope.

I just wanna know what Gunther's deal is. Man rolls up to the community center completion ceremony listening to Pierres big rousing speech like "yeah you tell 'em," as though he's ever been an active member of the community. What are you, you strange blue archaeologist cowboy?

I don't know that I'd be willing to subject either of them to Clint. At least Pierre and Lewis are capable of getting any.

A valid point. Okay, at least Pierre managed to marry somebody. That bar is extremely low, but it does exist!

...Although now that you bring it up, I'm imaging a sitcom-esque situation where Pierre is forced to room with Clint after getting booted out and Clint keeps bothering Pierre to find out the secret to how he managed to bag Caroline, unaware that Pierre barely has any more game than him.

Part of me is sad that marriage is required for perfection by way of the stardrop that's locked behind 14 hearts. All the marriage candidates are (understandably) allosexual and my ace rear end can never completely vibe with them.

On the flip side, we do get Krobus. He's pretty cool.

The grange always manages to sneak up on me without fail. I usually just throw whatever halfway-decent crops and animal produce I happen to have handy in. Grab the best gemstone I have handy and fish up the Angler to fill out the categories. That usually works.

Rabbits will pop around and kick their feet out when they're particularly happy. Maybe Stardew's bunnies kick their feet out a little too hard.

Wait, really? I’ve never seen this dialogue, is it part of her romance or something? God, how can there be so much content in this game :psyduck:

If you talk to her during the Stardew Valley Fair, she mentions that she won the spinning wheel game ten times in a row and the proprietor banned her from playing anymore.

Magical Melody is kind of like this. My Time at Sandrock and Portia have fellow/rival builders. They don't min-max to the same degree a player does, though Higgins is a spiteful bastard that it feels good to overcome. Mia is adorable and runs around scavenging the same way you do, which is a nice touch.

The problem is that the gulf between a new player to this sort of game and a player who knows what they're doing is massive; the ability to scale up one's operation to do more and more and more in the same timespan means that the rival will get lost in the dust, hopelessly outstrip the player, or have some sort of rubberbanding that gets seen through fairly quickly by players who pay attention closely. There's also a point where players let off the gas pedal, either intentionally or because everything has been maxed out.

Magical Melody's rival character also just outright doesn't matter outside of them being kind of a dick in a couple early cutscenes. It's kind of a shame really, it would've been cool if they had done more with the idea of a rival farmer.

Approaching the end of Y1. Winter means having time to actually think about my farm's layout instead of just building things. I might use the dead space where those powdermelons are for fruit trees, that might be cool. Didn't realize 1.6 made it so grass didn't die in the winter!

Also, I got lucky and found a red cabbage from the merchant even though I forgot to toggle Y1 completable, but the fruit bat cave is almost certainly gonna screw me over on the fodder bundle anyway. Oh well, a speedrunner I am not.

I feel like there's a comparison between Gus and Clint, as has already been brought up. They're both kinda weirdos but Gus is content within himself being a weirdo. I haven't unlocked everything with either of them, but Gus accepts himself. Clint thinks he needs something (or someone) to be happy.

I just did the first Flower Dance and I'm really annoyed I didn't take a screenshot of Gus's dialogue, which is perfect, where he's standing by the river and talks with goofy excitement about how it's the start of frog season. He'd also made a home-make kit of a mini-jukebox he gives to you after/at a heart event. Gus is who I wish Clint would turn into, with some work. Someone a little bit off but not in a creepy way, just an oddball way.

Not to go too "state of the world" but you'd hope a lot of boys and young men would grow out of Clint style behaviour. While they're young and gawky, and horned up, they're weird, but they learn to be happy about themselves on their own, then they find the people they can be with, even if they stay single. There should be contentment for Clint once he gets past his own tunnel vision. (But I also think it's cool that, as far as I know, SV doesn't work to solve everyone's problems. It just shows people going through life. Pelican Town continues after the game "ends.")

It's funny because that's kinda how Emily herself is too. Clearly on a different wavelength from everybody else but she owns it. From that angle it makes sense why Clint keeps pursuing her. She's what he wishes he was: emphatically comfortable in his own skin. He might not even consciously realize that thread, but it's there.
