I just don't get it. Ouya's dumb anyway, but what's the point in buying them and then scrapping the hardware? I can't imagine Ouyas software is that good, so were the employees that valuable?

The hardware was garbage in every way. The list of people who bought more than one game on the device, on the other hand, is an excellent marketing list for stupid-but-with-disposable-income customers who'll apparently buy anything.

Also several games had OUYA exclusivity of various types, so now Razer can get those sold on other devices and probably take a cut for things they didn't have to finance.

My heart is thinking they're going to buy some caro corn syrup and food dye, use the same bottle the corn syrup came in to mix up the dye, and pour it into tiny, unsanitary vials sealed with cork from a crafts store to ship out.
How they'll ship liquid, I have no idea. I'm pretty sure you can't use USPS.

It sounds interesting but I'm pretty sure hot topic and spencers covered the 'red corn syrup' market pretty well.

You can ship liquid by USPS just fine so long as it ain't alcoholic or explosive, but it's on you if your liquid stuff spills.

Yes, but it's not really illegal to offer some dumb kickstarter and describe it vaguely. But if they go to package it and don't change it to the real ingredient list, well...

Yes. Also the games are impossible to update as well, unless you buy a replacement cartridge. No free updates on this system!

Wonder how much money Kickstarter and other crowdfunding sites will throw at lobbyists the moment a lawmaker thinks "you know, maybe these sites that enable the funding in the first place actually should bear some responsibility" or if they'll just be seen as small enough to not be worth the time and effort.

Current case law holds that it's the project owner who's responsible for delivering, kinda like how Visa ain't responsible if Wal-Mart rips you off.

Sure, but it's been around for 6 years and popular for 4, and recent cases involving Kickstarter projects (and indiegogos etc) have all held that the wrongdoer in case of the scams are the project owners themselves. Doesn't look like the courts are going to change their minds on that any time soon.

Yes for like a really basic intro. The intention was that then you'd be able to program a whole other game within this game by the end, and that's not really a user interface that could work.

Like maybe if you put together the greatest developers and designers of all time you could but even they'd have that as a severe challenge.

Offbeatr makes you have a coherent plan, and prove interest from the site's members before they'll let you start asking for money. Honestly it's way more due dilligence than Indiegogo or Kickstarter, which has a lot to do with why Offbeatr projects almost always succeed in funding and apparently also deliver almost all the time.

Like I get this is probably the first time you've heard of him or something but older folks remember that he used to be pretty well off and bungled at all. One of the things was that he got rich of tech stocks just before the bubble burst, refused to sell off as it happened, and eneded up with millions turning into thousands. So basically he gets involved with this company, VA Linux in the late 90s. As part of something he did with them they granted him stock options pre-IPO worth $36 million. Now by the time he can sell them months later after IPO, the stock has dropped a lot so the stock's only $5 million in value but he still coulda sold them then. Instead he finally ends up getting like $160,000 for that stock shortly before the company goes under.

How feasible would it be to build a reliable watertight battery compartment into such a small space? Though I suppose there's also wireless charging.

And speaking of batteries, both Kickstarter and Indiegogo regularly have people trying to get into the electric bike industry. This generally involves some attempt at innovation which, when you think about it, would offer little to no real-world improvement over the many e-bikes readily available today. Such as this:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/reveloflex/flex-smartest-folding-electric-bike-that-fits-you?ref=nav_search

They brag about their "pedal assist" feature, which consists of pedals mounted directly to the front wheel like a child's tricycle. If you've ever so much as looked at someone riding a bike, you'll know that there's no way you can get any real torque in like that.

Or this "solar powered" bike where the solar power comes from some little carport-like thing (if you commute via bike, there's a good chance you live somewhere where you wouldn't have the outdoor space for it):

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/xkuty-one-the-ibike-made-for-iphone#/
They can put a works to 30 meters of water seal on the battery compartment of $8 tiny Casio watches, they could surely do one on that thing.
And if someone's got more than that pressure down there, they need to see a doctor.

I don't follow MST3k really but is there some sort of bad blood between Joel and the other cast members? It seems like all of the important cast is either involved with Rifftrax or Cinematic Titanic, so how do you try to bring back the show without involving any of them?

It wouldn't be impossible to bring back MST3K and do it right. If you had the old cast members and wrote it well, it would be like picking up right where they left off. This seems like a half-baked idea.

I think a lot of them don't want to pledge in to this unless it starts really getting in the cash.

Separately, I mean, there were 5 and a half seasons of the show done without joel at all (outside of cameos). Absolutely nobody who was there when the show first started, or even when it was first on cable, was still there by the end, save Jim Mallon who was the pretty much never on screen producer guy and like maybe one other behind the scenes dude. So even just in the context of the original show, there's been several major changeups in staffing, as people went off to do other things, had their own careers.

So it's not really a surprise that you don't have any given episode's full cast ready to go with Joel's project right now.

Crow had two different actors, Servo had two actors with one of them changing the voice while he did it, Gypsy has been done by like 4 or 5 different people. It's hardly unheard of in MST3K!

I don't think there's anything bad between any of the cast members. It's just that Rifftrax is a pretty major business at this point, as big or bigger in nerd circles today as MST3K was back in the 90s. Asking Mike, Bill, and Kevin back to restart their old TV show would mean their own business being put on hiatus or outright ending.

Rifftrax has a pretty big advantage over the other riffers anyway: they only produce and sell commentary tracks, not full copies of the film with their commentary over it, so they can legally make and sell riffs on any film in existence no matter its prominence. The low budget of MST3K is what restricted it to the shittiest of lovely B-movies and public domain shorts.

Comedy Central and then Sci Fi channel actually pretty good licensing arrangements, and many of the movies they covered, while not that great, had been major motion pictures, some even won movie awards, or had been very popular and expensive tv shows in their day. Really the time when they were restricted to the cheapest movies was the season on KTMA, a failing UHF independent channel in Minneapolis.

Where low budget really came in was for the early VHS and DVD releases of episodes, where for the longest time Rhino and Shout could only afford the cheapest movies. They've slowly gone higher range and worn down more picky rights holders now, to the point that 142 of 176 cable episodes have been released on DVD.
