Not strictly an Anime, but I've started watching these little Disney Channel JP shorts called Fireball Charming. It's obtuse humour with a robot heiress (I call her Robojou-sama, because I am a huge weeaboo) and her enormous, clunky, industrial robot butler. They're very short, disjointed comedy bits that are well animated and charming.

Seriously, the Akagi anime is one of my favourite things. The writer really does know how to ratchet up tension.

Also, if you really must watch Dragonball Z, watch Dragonball Kai instead. I was never the biggest fan of Z, but Kai made everything so much more snappy it was alot of fun. Had to watch it all subbed though, because I am British and cannot do without my Ocean dub.

^^ Ah, I see you edited in that you'd already seen it, but my statement still stands.Cake Attack posted:I have a habit of catching up on anime over the winter break, and so I'm curious as to what people thought the standouts of 2013 were. I watched Gargantia, Servant x Service, and The Devil is a Part Timer and I'm currently watching Golden Time, and Kill la Kill. (I may have forgotten about some titles from early in the year.) My biggest surprise of 2013 was definitely The Devil is a Part-Timer! (Hataraku Maou-sama!). It pretty much came out of nowhere, and it's a light novel adaptation. Not going to lie, those are usually terrible. However, the series has good comedy and it's breezy and fun. I found myself actually looking forward to the next episode each week, and I don't usually follow things weekly. It's a punchy, well paced series with some fun battles occasionally. I should look up Chihayafuru. I enjoyed the scanlated manga for as far as it got before skipping like forty chapters. If you haven't seen it yet and are interested in esoteric game animes, you can't really go wrong with Akagi. It takes what should be a boring game like Mahjong and turns it into a suspenseful drama about DESTROYING YOUR OPPONENT'S MIND. Just be aware that the art style is very... unique.

Gungrave starts out looking like it's going to be actiony, then spends 2/3 of the series on a tense mafia drama before going a bit balls to the wall crazy at the end. It's a good series, btw, but actiony it isn't for the most part.

Try Busou Renkin maybe. It feels stereotypical Shonen, but the main female character is both strong and independent, and the main male character has a good ark that doesn't venture into OP territory for a looooong time. It's just a good, fun series. Kokoro Wish fucked around with this message at 03:32 on Jan 11, 2014 |

Well holy poo poo, Chihayafuru is one of the best anime shows I've seen. I liked the manga well enough, but the anime's presentation and direction are just outstanding so far. It makes a game so obscure so easy to understand and doesn't obfuscate, as well as ratcheting up tension without mysticising the whole thing too much. The manga was a well written and quite human tale and the anime just enhances it all.

Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan is one of my guilty anime pleasures. While it's not as dark as Azazel, the tone is similar and there's alot of naughty humour, so if that's what turned you off, be forewarned. Oh, and repeated, gory murder. Azumanga Daioh anime is just a slow starter anyway and adapts alot of the odd jokes pretty well. Te manga also stopped being a 4koma at all past the half-way point anyway and the anime picks up at about the point it does that too. I still have the music track to the anime stuck in my head after all these years and the non-dub version is great (because sleepy-rear end sounding japanese Osaka > southern hill-billy Osaka).
