Apple's Bluetooth keyboard is the best desktop keyboard. If he wants to use it on his lap he'll need to buy one of those hosed up portfolio keyboards or something.

You guys better run some battery benchmarks to pinpoint exactly what CPU cycle is causing excess battery drain.

Or, you know, turn off your loving battery percentage and use it like a normal person because this same thing happens every time Apple releases an iOS update.

Of course, but that's a LOT of free space. I recently went on an app purge with my iPad and I still couldn't get any more than 1.9GB.

Text (i)Messages, pictures, movies, songs. My girlfriend cleared 2GB of space by deleting her text messages yesterday.

Has Apple officially announced the Oct 22 date, or is it still just a rumor from the (admittedly usually reliable) AllThingsD? Seems like the press invites should have gone out by now given it's 8 days out.

Invites haven't been sent out, but it's happening.

Chrome kind of blows on iOS. It doesn't even have all the gestures of the Android version. The refreshing does suck but I'm not sure if it's because of RAM or if the app sucks.

I actually like it better than Safari, but the lack of gestures (swipe to go back, specifically) means I don't use it.

The Retina mini that I've got goes noticeably yellower near the bottom of the screen in portrait. Apples quality control seem to have been on holiday lately.

This is the glue not having fully cured and it fades after a little while; it was a problem (Gluegate) with, I think, the iPhone 5 when it was first released, too. It's because Apple is shipping this poo poo straight off of the assembly line to your door.

Which do you recommend?

The Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard cover is really good, and you can buy them really cheap used--Like New on Amazon--like ~$25.

They've done a lot to fix it, but iOS 7's calendar has been lovely from the start. A lot of people are using alternatives like Calendars 5 or Fantastical (iPhone).

Yeah, but if you're my mom you complain instead of paying $10 and you also refuse to buy $.99 apps while having bamboo floors installed.

Would it be reasonable to assume that a next generation of iPad will be announced in late October as in previous years? I haven't heard any leaks or rumors.

Nobody knows for sure, but yeah, it's reasonable.

Any change in interaction logic is going to be painful for anyone who isn't fairly technologically literate to negotiate. Give an average 11 year old a laptop and ask them to email someone a file and watch the train wreck. Young people as a rule, in my experience, are used to dealing with mobile device logic, old people (especially ones who already have a computer) are probably used to traditional OS logic.

Mobile devices are definitely easier to learn, but there's still a learning curve there.

Unless you're referring to the price. I mean you could go with like a $300 laptop I guess? I don't know, an iPad isn't, in my mind, a significantly more affordable solution.

There's no learning curve for browsing the web, sending iMessages, and reading email. My 90 year old grandma isn't downloading new apps and syncing a directory of files through Dropbox. She's looking at wedding photos and forwarding racist email.

So my dad just upgraded to the new iPad and is going to give me his old one. He does t know what it is and I don't either - it's either a 2 or a 3. When I plug this into iTunes it'll tell me won't it? It's not a huge deal either way but I like to know what I'm getting. :)

If it has a retina screen, it's a 3.

Uh, is there a filebrowser or something for iCloud Drive on iOS?

Alternatively: how can I store my 3rd party books such that my iBooks progress/notes are synced. My macs are happy enough to open them from arbritrary locations but I guess iPads not so much

Download Documents 5 and use that -- it's still not ideal, but it's as good as you'll get.

Can anyone else testing iOS 9 beta 2 on an air 2 confirm that control centre is busted?

It's turned on in options, but doesn't work anywhere. I'm aware it's a beta and this might be a bug, so no biggie, but not sure if they moved it or changed it somehow.

Restart your device. It does this on my iPhone periodically too. I've been trying to figure out what causes it, and it's either hitting the home button three times to turn on accessibility options and dim my screen at night or completely random.

I'd settle for more consistency in icon design to start (made even worse by third-party developers, but Apple's stock apps are pretty loving awful in this regard too), but the grotesque clashes in color and general hideousness of Apple's folders was what I was directly commenting on.

Design is subjective, but for a long time Apple was the design company, and I'd argue that's no longer the case -- this extends beyond into UX (think of the clusterfuck that is Apple Music) as well, but iTunes has been a disaster for years so that's not really a new revelation.

iCloud isn't even the best option if you live in an Apple-centered universe. I don't know how anyone could suggest it over the myriad of other options that exist for someone using Windows.

Yeah. I keep my college notes in a folder for each class. I'd like to have those folders in a "Spring 2016" folder so I can keep them around without so much clutter in the future.

It looks like you can export notes to PDF though so that should be sufficient for storing old poo poo I may or may not ever reference again.

Nest them through icloud.com or OSX. You can't collapse them on iOS (you can through the web interface and on a Mac) but it'll create the organizational structure you want.
