Klosterdev and the Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Forticlient

User had already-problematic version of Forticlient, that also seemed to be broken in some other capacity. Tried to uninstall Forticlient, Windows couldn't uninstall it.  Tried to downgrade with the correct installer version, wouldn't let me because older version.  Downloaded Forticlient tools, ran the uninstaller, uninstaller couldn't uninstall because Forticlient was still running.  Tried to stop the tasks in task manager, they restarted.  Tried to disable the service, got an error.  Tried to stop the service from running on boot, same error.  Resolved issue by running the installer for an even newer version, that got it working normally again, uninstalled newest version, installed correct, functional version.

Pissing me off: Bomgar's support has become hot trash since they were bought by BeyondTrust. The people taking the calls know nothing, can't give me a case number until I get a technician callback, a technician is -never- available, I don't have the option to even be put on hold until one is, and the last guy I spoke to didn't even know what Bomgar was or even how to spell it. So nice of them to remind me at the end of the call that I can always check up on the status of my case (uncreated and with no case number) on their support portal.

Or are they suggesting that an attacker who gains access to a server might be stopped because they don't know powershell?

Office 2019 licenses, I believe as part of a technet subscription. If they don't want to pay for a desktop client though, the browser-based office suite you get with E1 is perfectly usable if they're super bare-bones. Just map some browser shortcuts on their desktops.

So , in my experience committing to one day of outage puts a lot of pressure on you. If they have no phones, website, email for a period of time - do they have a business continuity plan?

If they do and it’s fine then sure you’re just fine here really save for your own stress. Most groups their plan is try and get a message out that shits hosed, then get up ITs rear end and blame them for issues.

Seriously, from a surface level having good (more expensive) remote support software like Bomgar is "nice to have." From a practical point of view, switching to Bomgar has significantly improved our ability to support users, troubleshoot issues, and get them able to do their job faster. So has switching from TrackIT to a ticketing system that isn't trash. Making improvements to our environment by going with the most reasonable option given the circumstances compared to literally the cheapest "solution" is far worth the savings in wasted time and effort.

Don't switch to Bomgar, their support has become hot trash since they were bought out

The Fool posted:

But non-profits suck, regardless of how noble their mission is.

Working for a nonprofit is pretty great imo. The downside is they can't pay you market rate, but because of that, the barrier for entry is much lower, and you get experience with a lot of systems that companies with cash to spare can pay specialists and people with experience to deal with. So far this job has been an incredible education, and whenever I do leave I'll be able to demand a much higher salary than I otherwise could have. And as another perk, the people I work with are usually pretty empathetic and great to work with when things go south.

System power settings show the 1 hour setting. drat thing blanks and locks the screen after 15 minutes no matter what I do; which includes checking BIOS settings and updating the BIOS.

GPOs can be enforced to ignore blocked inheritance. You miiiight be able to get around that by setting local group policies, but that's an inevitable mess. Talk to your AD admin up the chain?

Edit: If system power settings show the 1 hour setting, it's probably not enforced. Orrrr corporate is doing something dumb like using regedit to configure things that policies exist for
