When he says 8 hour DSP montage, I think this is the one, assuming there aren't multiple such things.

I've been watching this video off and on for the past few days and I just wanted to check in and say how amazed I am at the lengths DSP went to to avoid learning how to crouch-jump in a Half Life 1 Source mod remake. The relevant footage starts at 4:14:39.

However, I'm kind of annoyed at the comments that blame Call of Duty and modern Nintendo games for making video games so simple that "real thinking games" like Legend of Zelda for the Wii would throw him for a loop. I think it's pretty obvious from the footage that no amount of hand-holding or forced tutorials is enough to teach DSP how to play.

Limited currency doesn't work that way - you'd have to ruin peoples faith in it, otherwise it will just stabilize and go back up once you've hit it with the inflation. It might not go as high immediately, assuming fixed demand, but you couldn't keep the price artificially depressed with a limited number of coins.

Keep in mind I don't own any bitcoin or care about it.

And either way, LP doesn't seem like the right place to discuss it.

slowbeef posted:

I don't mind this. Dead to rights.

No, really, some people do have a thing, but I don't think it's a catchphrase (or an offensive one) until it becomes a crutch for "I can't think of something to say, but here's a funny thing I had said previously." Simply Simon ends every video with "Thank you very much for your attention" and Psychedelic Eyeball starts with "Hello everybody, this is Psychedelic Eyeball." You could theoretically call these catchphrases, but I don't think they're what we're talking about with annoying catchphrases.

I don't think sign-ons and sign-offs count as catchphrases considering that everybody uses them. Saying "Hello" and "Goodbye" to your friends is just about the same thing, after all. Using the same intro and exit is simply a matter of habit and it's only when someone intentionally tries to be unusual that it becomes a catchphrase (and usually an annoying catchphrase for the same reason).

So by that criteria, Joel Hodgeson saying "Welcome to the Satellite of Love" is not a catchphrase, but Trace Beaulieu's "Push the button, Frank" is.

Why would it be different if they were journalists? Video game journalism is journalism for a silly hobby and thus being unbiased doesn't really matter.

The problem with games journalism (and a lot of hobby journalism for that matter) is that the journalists are funded by ads for the things they're reviewing. Book and film reviewers working for the New York Times and other generalized outlets can afford to be unbiased because they're funded by a lot of different industry ads and subscriptions.

If we want unbiased game reviews, we'd need something along the lines of Consumer Reports which refuses to take any money from companies. As it is, most game review sites have become little more than advertising companies who review a few indie games for legitimacy.

It seems like a character based Let's Play would be better if you had a persona who fit with the game more, and actually made jokes.

Considering that PewDiePie is essentially a character when he's LP'ing rather than a real person, I would say that yes, playing a screaming character does exist beyond Team Four Star.
