I finally ditched my full-computer-HTPC for Plex on an HP n54l streaming to a Roku and iOS devices.

It's a whole new world. Everything works, the interface is great, partial-watches are tracked between devices.

I just streamed a 30gb raw BluRay iso to my phone via 3G and it looked great. I only have 1.5mbps upload on my home connection.

What do you mean by a diskless NAS? I have Plex installed on my iMac and it mounts network shares from my NAS that sits plugged in into the basement. It works fantastic with both Chromecast and Roku and will let you know how with the FireTV this weekend.

He means a consumer NAS that can run packages like Plex directly. Synology, QNAP etc.

Usually they're sold either disk less or optionally bundled with drives, so I assume he reused the term from product descriptions.

Sickbeard can automatically sort your existing media folder if the files have somewhat parse-able names.

It can even give everything a consistent naming scheme and add ep titles to file names.

I'm getting a lot of video skips and loud audio glitches direct-playing from Plex to my Roku3. They seem to be reproducible in the same spots in the same files, but it isn't happening when playing to an iPad, or when transcoding to the Roku.

I found at least one similar complaint on the Plex forums, but the answer was just "force transcoding." The audio glitches are so loud and disturbing and playback doesn't look nearly as good transcoded, it's really making me want to trade in the Roku. Maybe for a FireTV? I haven't heard much about it since the week it launched.

You should be able to force transcoding with bitrate limits in the player app itself.

I know the Roku and iOS apps can.

I paid for Plexpass during the few months I was flying a lot last winter. The iOS syncing for offline playback was nice, but buggy at times.

I considered the lifetime pass, but the rumors that offline syncing will eventually require a separate additional purchase soured me on that idea.

At least in the iOS app you can choose to browse "by folder" but you lose the pretty metadata.

There are Plex builds for a lot of consumer NAS devices. If you're direct-playing to devices with good codec support, power won't matter much.

Low-end or mid-range appliance NAS' will struggle to transcode. I'm running xPenology on an N54L and its been transcoding wonderfully for me.

If you're manually forwarding the port rather than using uPnP, did you set it up that way on the Settings>Server>Connect page in Plex?

And Plexpass isn't required to stream remotely, if you're paying monthly just for that. The premium mobile-sync features are for carrying episodes on portable devices for playing back later when you don't have internet.

I'll just be blunt and lead off with the fact that yes, I'm using Plex for camera phone porn. So I'm trying to figure out just how private I can keep everything. I run the Plex server on my laptop, and usually view content on an Apple TV (using the "Trailers" hack on a non-jailbroken unit).

I also have a Roku, and tried out the Plex app one day, and was surprised that it could discover and access my Plex library immediately. My library is also popping up on the PS3's Plex client, although I can't seem to actually view content on that.

So is there any option in the Plex server to grant access only to specific devices? I really only want it to show up on that one Apple TV. I've looked through the settings and can't find any options for this.

Another question I probably should have researched before I set all this up - are thumbnails and such being indexed online if I haven't connected my home server?

I keep separate three separate TV libraries indexing three separate folders so I can keep what I share with kids family-friendly, and so I don't have to browse through the dumb shows I host for my mom.

Plex has glitched on more than one occasion and shows have appeared in the wrong library, despite being in entirely different folders on the server. The consequences for me where simply Justified showing up in the kids view, or having to skip over The Mentalist in my own browsing.

Good luck!

I guess that explains why Rarflix hasn't been updated in a while.

I'd like to try the new Roku interface, but it says the Plex server on my Synology is out of date. I don't see an update on the Synology Package Manager, and there's no button to check for an update inside the Plex server interface. I downloaded the newest server package directly from Plex, then tried to install it from the PackageManager, but that failed. Any ideas?

edit: It seems that I have to update the Synology from DSM 4 to 5 to update Plex. Shoot.

I bought PlexPass when it was still $75 lifetime, but it's absolutely worth it for me as a frequent traveler.

I never have to sit down before a trip to manually load up my iPad, never have to manually update watched/unwatched data when I get home.

If I'm binge-watching a series I can watch as many episodes as I want at home, then hit "sync" before bed and be sure that I have the next ep with me on the plane the next day.

I can also take old shows I don't mind casually rewatching and set them to sync a few episodes on low-priority to fill any remaining space on my iPad after anything new is loaded on. That way I'm never stuck in the air with absolutely nothing to watch.

If you have plexpass setup to sync "X number of unwatched episodes," when an episode is marked as watched on the server, it will be removed next sync.

Most of the time I'll get through a small percentage, I just like to have lots of choice.

There's lots of options. You can set priority order for syncing different shows until it fills up whatever amount of storage you've allotted. It's a real luxury compared to doing it manually.

Am I dumb, or is there no way to watch sync'd movies on my iPad when offline? They're downloaded, but seems they want an internet connection anyway. Does it just need a connection for a quick authorization? If so I could start the movie before I get on the plane using airport wifi, or spring for the 30 minute in-flight wifi just to get it going.

I'll also accept that I'm both dumb AND there is no way to watch offline.

If you flip "show only synced libraries" in the iOS app settings when you don't have Internet, it shouldn't even bother going online and only show locally-stored content.

Does that fix your problem? Sync works beautifully for me.

Another gotcha: if you accidentally start a sync when away from home and don't have enough time to fully download files over a slow connection, you can end up with a bunch of videos that appear to be synced to the iPad but won't actually play.

I have a Chromecast, but he'd need an app (Android/iOS) or Plex account in a browser to start it up and cast, correct? There's no straight free option it looks like even though we're on the same LAN.

Have him make an account on plex.tv, then you log into plex.tv and invite him to share. You can even pick and choose what libraries are available to him. That much works for free, no plexpass required.
