That viewscreen really annoys me, probably because it's all lumpy in the name of looking 'biological'. It's not like symmetries are particularly rare in nature.

Shorter answer: the only thing they have in common is the presence of spaceships. If you were to bring one in contact with the other, the resulting explosion of sperg would make Star Trek/Star Wars flamewars look like a damp squib.

Tunicate posted:Personally, I think DS9. Is basically babylon 5 averaged. None of the real stinker episodes, but less of the really good ones. That's generally why I didn't care much for DS9: in broad strokes, it felt like B5 given a thorough pounding with a Trek stamp. The episodes my friends loved, with the fleets and the phasers flying all over were crap: senseless fizzing and special effects wankery filling in a quarter of an episode. The ones I did like were where they made honest effort to pull up the rug and look at what was underneath Roddenberry's utopia. gently caress the arguments over whether the Defiant is a ripoff of the White Star, let's watch an actually good time travel episode or two to look at the chaos of the 21st century or pull a chair out for the pulps-- and not in that sanitized way Picard always did in his holodeck cosplays. That hilarious exchange between Garak and Quark, comparing the Federation to root beer. gently caress, Sisko bloodying Q's nose. Eh, okay. While I didn't really care for DS9 as a series, it was head and shoulders above what came afterward. When the original actor for Janeway quit, they claimed she hadn't realized the rigors of episodic filming. I think it was the apparent lack of a series bible and the whiplash of characterization from episode to episode that made her decide her integrity was worth more than the paycheque.

His tone is poo poo, but I don't disagree with him. Leaving the iconic ships in a state where they're permanently outclassed by whatever they dream up for publish 10 and beyond would probably upset a good number of players. Not that Cryptic wouldn't have figured that out for themselves. Posting your lovely manifesto to the forums is shouting into the wind, though.

SKY COQ posted:By the same token though, the Galaxy class is, in universe, a 50 year-old ship. I don't disagree. I'm just noting that they sold some people with the promise of flying familiar boats, and the putative threat of 'having' to mothball their toys in order to keep up with the new hotness is going to upset some of them. It's not like there isn't precedent for upgrading ships with modules, or reskinning them with holographic disguises, either. Not that canon in MMOs is worth a squirt of piss in practice, or that STO's isn't a mess to begin with. The number of USS Other Series Reference or IKS Borderline Obscenity I've seen while tooling around, or the ridiculous bios that get posted here is indicative of that. I do wonder what would happen if CBS, for whatever reason, put the kibosh on T6 or later upgrades for the older-series vessels. I doubt there would be much impact to Cryptic's bottom line, since the real whales are probably buying everything as it comes down the pike, but good god I can smell the stink being raised from here.

People like to talk about how awful /trade chat in WoW is, and sure, since you've got a bunch of manchildren masturbating into their Guy Fawkes masks, it's plenty stupid and offensive. STO chat though... good god, it's depressing. There's this awful, grating smugness, between the armchair experts in every field and the constant joust of series warriors that makes me embarrassed to be a part of the sci-fi fandom.

SA isn't the powerhouse that it was ten years ago, but we do have a culture (such as it is) and take a very dim view of people who sign up solely for the fringe benefits of membership. Once upon a time, the legends say, we had file forums filled with music, movies and porn. Now, nobody new ever asks 'where da movies at?' We still have active groups in a number of MMOs, but like SA-Mart, most of them don't want you if you haven't been around at least several months and making yourself a part of the forums community, because scammers and spies happen. Simply stated, SA guilds and fleets are for SA Goons. If you aren't active on the forums, then you're clearly not a Goon. Your ten bucks only goes so far.

I briefly returned to farm up a couple of Raisa cruisers and discovered that I really, really didn't care for the new doff interface or the replacement crafting system. I tried to relearn space combat in the Dyson sphere, but that lost me within minutes. So I figured I'd sit tight and wait for the upcoming expansion. Now, the only reason I haven't uninstalled is sheer lethargy.
