The majority of charities (including the big name ones) are entirely on the up and up with the vast majority of non-direct spending being invested into fundraising (ie. allowing for larger direct spending in the future) and miniscule amounts going into admin/wages/etc.?

It's the same in the UK. I literally do nothing with my taxes and then at the end of the tax year the government sends me a letter and sometimes it's got some money inside, sometimes it doesn't.
