Logan 5 posted:Skimming through Dead Beat now. Noticed that when Harry's in Bock's book shop and "Shiela" helps him find the Die Lied der Erlking he notes that the book had been compiled out of old wizard writings by the "Wizard Peabody early last century". Yup, noticed that in my recent reread but then I asked myself: Why did Cowl needed that copy from Dresden when he could have asked Peabody for a copy of the poem if it's true that both of them were Black Council?

Liked the book, especially Hades being a chill guy, the entire conversation had the "you and I are similar, we do our duty and we have an awesome dog" vibe. Also, the moment with Sir Butters the Jewish Jedi Knight of the Cross made me laugh a lot, which I'm grateful for because my life has been so lovely lately that any moment to laugh is welcomed

apostateCourier posted:Has it ever been explained why Toot is getting bigger? Is it because his influence among the Little Folk is spreading? Because his liege lord, Harry, is getting stronger and has a high rank inside the faerie hierarchy. That also explains why Toot and his mooks are now Winter instead of being wild fae like they were in the first books.

Well, most of the members of the inner council are pretty old (300+ years), they are literally living relics from the past, and probably not exactly progressive thinking types.

Now that we are on it, how accurate is Butcher's portrait of Chicago in the Dresden files series?

I know nothing about Chicago, not american and never been there, hell, when I think of Chicago what comes to my mind is prohibition-era gangster movies (I know is cliched as gently caress but I don't have any other point of reference). His descriptions of the city has been pretty vague and generic except for a few landmarks, so I suppose what you guys say explains it.

The best thing about Blood rites were the poo-flinging demon gorillas who combine Voltron style into a super gorilla. We need more of these rather than super porn vampire actresses. Well ok, maybe the gorillas weren't exactly the only good thing about the book but it's pretty close.

The entire series has progressed from Harry being clever and prepared to him brute forcing solutions. The Merlin is mentioned as carrying around potions on his utility belt so high end wizards still use them I'd assume. And yet we have Ebenazar McCoy, who's described as one of the most badass mages in battle but never appears to wear any gadget except his staff, so I guess it depends on personal style.

If I recall correctly, the first law only applies to mortals, so turbo murdering other supernaturals is fine if you have a valid reason(unless you drag the Council into a hell war, of course).

At least with ASOIAF there's closure with the TV show and there's only meant to be one or two more books (if they ever come out). I'm pretty ok if the Fat One doesn't finish the books, the ASOIAF show writers will make a far better job at finishing the series than GRRM would do anyway. Butcher is alone and I'd like to see the Dresden files finished one day, but the situation is not exactly encouraging
