One thing that's really cool about this is that, because neither the buyer nor Sotheby's was in on the prank, nobody really knows what's supposed to happen now. Auction houses are usually on the hook for damage that occurs to items in their custody but it's really not clear whether this counts or not. It might even be more valuable now. Who knows?

I know this isn't the point, but.. $1000? One thousand dollars was enough to trigger their, "you can't possibly make this much" reflex? Jesus.

The article doesn't say the amount was the issue only that they said "it doesn't match our records." I could only guess what that means but he apparently cashed with no issues at a different branch.

I have absolutely no use whatsoever for black metal but I can respect a band that has a clear idea of what it wants to be and is willing to make sacrifices to be it, even if I think the whole thing is a bit silly.

...is what i was thinking until I got to the part about "Antifa trolls." Kind of gives away what they're really upset about.

I just can't stop wondering how this was ever a sensible headline. Maybe people in general just not built up the vocabulary for this? Maybe there just weren't reliable generally agreed upon meanings for words like orbit and launch? Maybe even the word space was ambiguous enough that you had to add "115 miles into" so that people wouldn't think the US had hurled a man into some area somewhere.

That stats page is really disappointing. I can find lists of popular names all over the place. And who cares what celebrity names people are searching for? I'd like to know what the most common name combinations are and how many people the average person shares a name with.

After playing with that site a bit I'm pretty sure it's just giving you the number of people with that name you'd expect if the names were just randomly distributed. Like if 1% of the population in named Bob and 10% of the population is named Smith then 1% of people with the last name Smith must also be named Bob and therefore 0.1% of the population must be named Bob Smith.

What’s the point of courtroom sketch artists anyways? Like, do most courts still pay for a sketch artist, or is it only for sufficiently “big” cases? Or do sketch artists just like to show up to random court cases and draw people?

They're either employed by media organization or sell their sketches to them. So they mainly cover cases were there's some sort of newsworthiness but no cameras are allowed.

Huh, is that a crime? Not the buying a child bit, the shouting at a stranger to buy it bit
If he screams at some dude that he wants to hire him for a hit, is that attempted conspiracy to murder?
If he screams at a woman that he wants to pay her for sex, is that attempted prostitution?
I really gotta be more careful what I shout at random strangers in future

The shouting is the attempt. The things you describe would be solicitation of murder and prostitution respectively. There's some nuances from jurisdiction to jurisdiction I'm sure. But, yes, encouraging somebody else to commit a crime can be a crime even if it's done in an awkward way.
