The Brad Jones silence is not really surprising, I guess. The guy’s always been about pumping out his videos and saying nothing about anything, I guess.

Soon he’ll be the last one left there.

Agreed. No criticism of anyone left there is implied or intended. Part of why Channel Awesome is lovely is the dependency built into the nature of the place.

I'm so sorry you had (and hopefully are not still having) to go through that.

It blows my mind that not only are they such terrible, arrogant people, but they’re so bad at everything. Usually abusers and exploiters have some kind of talent or resources that people use to ignore and justify the horrible things they do. It’s 2018 and their best accomplishment is still having some dork who’s pushing 40 screech incredulously at a cd-i machine.

These assholes just fell rear end-backwards into the perfect place and time and were so ungrateful that they couldn’t stop treating people like poo poo for five minutes.

I think the big lesson this thread has taught me is to focus on the work and stay in the realm of ideas or political action (unless someone turns out to be a sexmonster or a Doug, of course).

It actually makes me a little nervous seeing Brad do videos with his wife after they were so careful to keep their life off of youtube. It was nice when the internet was mostly a fun clubhouse, but that’s long gone now.

Just focus on Channel Awesome being bad and don’t worry about the choices of producers. Maven is still on CA (for now) and she is for sure very ethically minded and well aware of how lovely they are. Remember that part of how they’re lovely is by creating conditions of dependency, and that they treat the producers very badly.

Let's start with "all of them" and work our way down from there. In terms of his actual production, it always struck me that he did so many reviews after other TGWTG people did them. Someone did the math once and he did ten movies right after MikeJ did them for Shameful Sequels, and he stole Mike's video premise of defending the prequels. Not hard to see why Mike felt like he was ignored by CA.

Not a movie take, but he did a cd-i review in 2017. Trying to branch out into Irate Gamer material a decade too late, I guess.

Didn’t he have trouble figuring out the plot of Ernest Scared Stupid because there was some kind of surprise reveal when Ernest fought the troll?

It was either that or he couldn’t understand that it wasn’t in continuity with Ernest Goes to Jail. And it’s very clearly explained in that movie that Ernest loses his electrical powers at the end anyway, so it wouldn’t even make any difference.

I’m sure some of them have forgotten they’re even listed there—I doubt there’s anything like a community or regular contact between producers any more. Also there’s probably a chud army of Doug fans ready to attack anyone (women) who leaves, criticizes CA, breathes, or eats.

Today’s also the day of that convention with Doug that Brad was low-key complaining about last week. Maybe there will be a fun trip report posted somewhere.

I think he was behind one of those anti CA websites back in the day. You know before the big exoduses(exodusi?) and the worst most people knew about the site was that some of the producers could be a bit abrasive irl.

This made me slightly curious as to how the other ones are handling it. Though I don't really want to track them down.

I shouldn't even mention it, but some horror movie guy (Dave-ula or Tom-ula--some kind of pun with a regular-guy name and a Dracula suffix) who apparently used to be on the site did a response video full of hilariously petty grievances against most of the producers who left--stuff like someone complaining about him not having beer at a party he hosted. I don't know why I kept watching, but he ended it with words of support for the poor, misunderstood hordes of gamergate, who were prematurely judged by snooty snobs like Kyle Kallgren and Dan Olson, who made everyone take a side when poor Dave-ula wanted to remain neutral and see where they were going with all the doxxing and rape threats.

I never heard of him and I shouldn't be giving him the attention, but his video showed up in the related category while I was browsing. Lots of reaction videos from those producers who just monologue over cartoon drawings of mascot versions of themselves with top hats and tuxedos, who I always assume are reactionary scum and skip over on the basis of the shared aesthetic.

I think you mean Count Jackula, right? I watched a couple of his videos, I thought he was alright until I heard of him blasting Dan Olson for the Ghostbusters reboot controversy. Something about Dan calling James Rolfe a misogynist and Jackula getting pissed off about it. I remember he'd left the day after going on some Twitter tirade about how him and Horror Guru were the only two people on Channel Awesome supporting PewDiePie.

Yeah, that's him. He ends his video by saying that Dan was an underhanded sneak for writing an article about how 8chan was full of child pornography, because he was really going after gamergate but did it by trying to take away their website instead of just criticizing them openly. He also repeats the 4chan talking point of Dan being a pedophile for writing an article about 8chan being full of child pornography. He seems like an incredibly bitter person who has never forgotten a single slight, no matter how small or imagined.

It's just more validation for the observation that people who make a point of saying that they don't do drama are in fact hugely toxic people who cause all their own problems.

They’ll probably just revert to being a youtube channel doing Doug videos. They still seem to have tons of money to throw away, and they don’t seem to care about anyone else featured on the site. And they don’t care about video quality or learning or growing in any way. They’re in a kind of George Lucas circa 1998 situation, just doing a garbage passion project for reasons only they understand.

I wonder if so many people left today because they gave some kind of crazy ultimatum.

It would be great if at the very least people stopped associating anyone who had ever shared videos there with it forever, such that Doug fans in 2018 would stop pestering past victims about the current state of the place or what’s so bad about old Doug.

Which is exactly what touched all this off in the first place.

Channel Awesome may be pulling in money, but their studio is in a high-demand area and their rent is probably climbing. And despite Michaud being the one true owner of the company and all the associated IP, he’s not paying himself enough to buy a house.

Allison’s most recent video on the topic came across as both sincere and mature. It’s been a treat watching her improve her presentation skills over the years.

Yeah, I know we are all probably subscribed to her here, but since she reads the thread sometimes I’ll throw in a strong compliment for that video. It’s pitched just right and delivered very thoughtfully. I don’t know what it felt like to make (probably not great), but I hope it creates some closure and that it can ultimately be an affirmative experience.

I’m a little of two minds on the channel awesome stuff, because on the one hand I want to bear witness to testimony and acknowledge the reality of what’s happened, but if the people affected want to put it behind them (and they do, obviously) I feel like there’s a point where it gets to be unseemly for us to keep tallying up ca losses and reporting back on who’s saying what.

As for putting it all behind us, yes and no. I wanted people to talk about this and know, because part of what made me so sad before was the fact people immediately put it behind them. I don't want to be tied to Channel Awesome, but I am happy people are hearing us now.

For what it’s worth, that stuff with Michaud criticizing you by leaving up negative comments and expecting you to figure out why is 100% a classic abuse tactic, as is coming at you about it at a weird time when you’re alone and not expecting it. There’s no real way to prepare or protect yourself with poo poo like that because it’s so carefully calibrated to throw you off balance.

I’m sorry you had to endure it. Also for what it’s worth, it’s been such a pleasure watching you branch out and sharpen your unique voice over the past few years. Being public about what’s gone on will definitely help out some people watching this unfold.

I would really enjoy a full deep dive into de Coteau and his bizarre oeuvre some day. It feels like A Talking Cat got most of the attention for being so outwardly bizarre, but it’s really just the tip of the iceberg. The guy became a millionaire making dozens of Cinemax-in-the-90s-style softcore gay horror/sci-fi “erotica” straight-to-video films, but in the age of streaming internet video. And there’s always a mid-30s sexy lady on the cover. There has to be a story there.
