Has it ever been a popular theory that the Machines are actually the good guys during the movies? Because I maintain that what they did was fundamentally a kindness, albeit a very costly one, at least from their perspective.

That's the theory I hold to as well--since the human battery theory in the film is a bit silly. You'd get more energy by burning the food that people eat than what you get from the body, let alone when you factor in what is lost in the growing process--all real estate that could be put to use for more practical forms of energy production, like synthetic petroleum or geothermal stuff.

I saw pretty much all of them and NOPE. Big sad nope. The Lego Movie was good. That is literally the only one. (And "boo it didn't get nom'd for an Oscar," I guess, but even though it was the best animated movie to come out in 2014, I don't think I'd call it "Oscar-good." It's a pure family comedy start to finish that just so happens to be genuinely funny, but for Best Animated Feature, I tend to expect something more than "A good comedy despite its marketing-built premise, and due entirely to the presence of our Lord & Miller, saviors of stillborn movie premises.") We didn't get anything like that this year.

It's a really pretty movie. They're pushing some of that CG technology to its limits in that film. But the script is joyless, overwritten fanfiction that takes itself way too seriously and is riddled with enormous story problems.

Anyway, run-down of the American-made toon movies this year, because I need to purge the feelings:

I love the idea of 200 dollars being a good game show prize. Shows that pay cash pay big cash because, ya know, people want big cash. Why not make it a cool thing worth about that? People are more forgiving about cheap prizes if the prize is a cool thing.

Like yea no poo poo anyone would love to get 200 bucks but game shows are all about big stakes. Ya know...making it into a game.

But yea, everyone already said what I would, horrible pacing, dead room with no audience (seriously the gimmick is actually pretty solid, go full on 'he's like a lovely Jigsaw' and have him have a boombox with canned reactions on it for some lackey to play. We don't need an actual live audience we just want it to sound alive, fold the joke in and keep the theme), zero interaction with the contestants just feels weird. We don't want to hear about their life stories but it's just really stuff and offputting to be all "THIS IS MAX MAX HERE IS A QUESTION YOU ARE RIGHT MAX YOU WIN GOODBYE". You can still play up the weird kidnapping bit there too, ask them normal game show get to know you things and sprinkle in random very personal/weird questions or something.

Cash Cab got away with low cash prizes. But then, you didn't have to dress up for Cash Cab. You were getting into a cab and suddenly eligible to win dozens, nay, hundreds of dollars.

All that these "contestants" have to do is realize that there are gameshow laws, get a lawyer, and Michaud & Co. are hosed.

Though, looking at the newer models of bear suit, they don't seem that awkward anymore:

(Hell, I could see a fairly realistic Samus "zero suit" design taking cues from that.)

EDIT: I can see SOME justification for Samus having some sort of extra protection layer under her bigger (more combersome) power armor in case the latter fails but the zero suit is just silly fanservice especially with those dumb heels they added to it in Smash Brothers.

Yeah, the movie was originally a 2.5 hour cut with a lot more character DO-RA-MA in it, and they made Whedon cut that stuff down to the bare minimum with greater focus on the action and plot. That's why he's said he won't be working on future Avengers films. His beautiful, brilliant character angst was cut. What remains in the film is like all Whedon character drama: effective if you're 13, eye-rolling if you're not.

Thank christ, frankly. Avengers 2 was a fine movie, but it was actively worsened by his terrible tone-less dialogue. (One of the greatest things about the first Avengers film was how heavily Whedon's "writing voice" was reined in, so everyone still sounded like themselves. In Avengers 2, he ran hog-wild and even Captain Goddamn America sounds like Joss Fuckin' Whedon. Seriously, that guy writes every single character to sound like a disaffected snarky teenager no matter who they are or where they're from in every single one of his works, and It's Always Been Awful.) Anyway, having seen a giant swath of his past work, I am 110% certain that if the movie was 3.5 hours long, it wouldn't have made the character writing any better or the thematic core any deeper or whatever he was going on about. Whedon has never written convincingly human characters, and he's never written anything with a notable level of depth either.

That's just my feelings, of course. :v: Not a fan of the Whedon.

This is probably for the best. I like Whedon, but it would have been bad to have him get any more control of one of these films. I have a feeling that they will find someone as good or better to do the next one (probably better, since Disney/Marvel is richer than god at the moment.)

Yeah, it's not like she's trying to do a thesis paper in these videos. She's talking about key themes than make up the character and the ways in which he or she (or it) has changed over the years. In a situation like this, where the "character" is older than old, you can use a small set of examples to represent a larger set of archetypes that they tend to follow and the themes that they represent. She also, in the case of Black Butler and Dead Like Me, noted some less common representations, such as being portrayed as a bureaucracy.

The appeal for me is story and characters, I was and still am one of those people who kept getting stuck and leaving games half complete. This looks interesting but not something I really have to play. Since this was kickstarted I'm guessing there'll be some bitter tweets from a few disgruntled backers.*

*I'm assuming the $400 million is an exaggerated joke but that still means it was pretty successful, I guess that'll factor into its coverage and backlash.

Broken Age is a game that was hurt by being released in two parts. For one, it feels like a lesser experience when played months/years apart. For another, if they had waited and released the whole thing at once, they might have done some of the things recommended in Pre-Rec, like making you switch between characters earlier and more often.
