Just wanted to say that I am very much enjoying Song Crimes. I actually like that it's relatively short, most of my podcasts are an hour+ so it's nice to have something I can start and finish while I walk to work. I will say, however, that I was really hoping you'd manage to fit a Johnny Cash song for the fourth episode in a row.

Thanks! And I assure you that we have no shortage of Johnny Cash songs. In fact, they should’ve called him the Man in Black… Robes! :rimshot:

Counterpoint: Actual real life lawyers who actually deal with gambling law say that lootboxes are gambling because (at least in the US) the actual exchange of currency doesn't have anything to do with whether or not something is gambling and Blizzard et al are simply getting away with it because nobody cares enough and they are making enough money to eat the inevitable fines.

Not where I live.

Idaho Code § 18-3801 posted:

"Gambling" means risking any money, credit, deposit or other thing of value for gain contingent in whole or in part upon lot, chance, the operation of a gambling device or the happening or outcome of an event, including a sporting event, the operation of casino gambling including, but not limited to, blackjack, craps, roulette, poker, bacarrat [baccarat] or keno, but does not include:
(1) Bona fide contests of skill, speed, strength or endurance in which awards are made only to entrants or the owners of entrants; or
(2) Bona fide business transactions which are valid under the law of contracts; or
(3) Games that award only additional play; or
(4) Merchant promotional contests and drawings conducted incidentally to bona fide nongaming business operations, if prizes are awarded without consideration being charged to participants; or
(5) Other acts or transactions now or hereafter expressly authorized by law.

If I’m representing Blizzard, I get two defenses right in the statute: that the players aren’t “risking any money, credit, deposit or other thing of value” and that the game is a “[b]ona fide contest of skill….” (WoW requires very little skill to play, but it does require some skill.)

This idea that most people espouse points of view on the Internet because they considered multiple, well-reasoned arguments, rather than because of that addictive rush of validation, is SO naïve.

Which is why the best way to persuade someone is to do it in a place where they aren’t surrounded by people who are reinforcing their current beliefs.

I think the issue is more that online, throwing out gimmicky persona people, the line between acquaintances and friend can be a bit blurred because of these giant shared discussions. I have online friends who I would go to (in a private chat) if things got tough, but it's not the same as a big support thread which you need to be careful about. This isn't alien in real life either, like you may become friends with some regulars at your bar or your hair stylist or whatever, but just because you converse a lot in limited contexts doesn't make them your friend. The internet just magnifies that because suddenly you're interacting with a lot of people right on that line where you maybe could become friends but aren't quite.

And because the second one of those people pisses you off, you can afford to block them and replace them with someone else, who shares every one of your opinions, including the ones that probably shouldn’t get reinforced.

I spent a few years living on a flyspeck island where I had no choice but to make friends with people who were very different from me. It probably contributed more to my maturity than anything else I’ve ever done.

Channel Awesome may be pulling in money, but their studio is in a high-demand area and their rent is probably climbing. And despite Michaud being the one true owner of the company and all the associated IP, he’s not paying himself enough to buy a house.

Allison’s most recent video on the topic came across as both sincere and mature. It’s been a treat watching her improve her presentation skills over the years.
