Well, poo poo. I should have done the 30-day, then I could be driving the damned thing while waiting on the paperwork.

Ah, 30-day costs $25. 5-day is free, and is good if the seller keeps the plates (which they can do in TX.)

That was the funnest game type in the beta. they made the cars sound pretty good too, at least the sports sedan and the musclecar. Basically sound like CTS-V and Challenger, respectively.

I'd also like to punch the genius engineer at ford who decided that the EGR valve, the solenoid that controls vacuum to it, and the senor that provides feedback to the ECU about EGR flow should be a complete unit on my P71, rather than 3 separate, replaceable parts like on the earlier models. Because the sensor (DPFE, for those of you who speak Ford P0401) sensor is daft, I have to buy an entire $175 EGR assembly, rather than JUST the sensor. Jerks.
I found it for $127 on Rock Auto, but still...
Once that's replaced I can get the silly thing inspected and registered (because Texas just went to a single sticker, so you can't just get one or the other.)

I also need to replace the bearings in the $Texas 200A alternator, because I sure ain't buying a new one. But first, I need a special tool to get the goddamned pulley off, because it has a built in overrunning clutch for some reason. Fortunately that tool is only $25 on Amazon (on the way, as well.)

Wow they found a way to make it worse than the one I had to do a couple months ago. Fuckin' Ford.

We ended up replacing everything except the sensor anyways, because the tube was rotted in half, the tube flare nut was seized to the bung, the bung was partially seized to the manifold, and the valve was clogged. I guess the sensor's still original, but it might not be for long because it still throws a code occasionally.

If your EGR bung is seized to the EGR pipe or module and you end up needing to replace it, I've got the right tap to chase the threads (two of them, because the one I ordered first was on the slow boat from China and I needed it RFN) and will gladly mail it to you.

At least the EGR is right on the side of the throttle body adapter, right on top of the intake on this 4.6. Easy to reach. And no rust-Texas, though that would be the one place where it would rust to a nub. Fortunately, this one is new enough to not be a problem. Thanks for the offer, though!

At least I didn't buy a replacement alternator first: $200 new/rebuild, $80-90 used (200A cop stuff.) the tool was only $25.
Turned out to be the water pump bearing. Wasn't leaking yet. Oh, hey Ford, aluminum water pump in a cast iron block, which fits in closely with an o-ring seal. Let's not put any sort of grease or anti-seize on that, shall we? Even in Texas that thing took a lot of hammering on pry-bars to get out.
Now I just need to replace the EGR (actually, the DPFE, but it's integrated with the EGR assembly) to get rid of the P0401, get it inspecticated, then registered (title transfer already done), and I'm good. Love my P71.

We had a meeting yesterday where day had put "deciding the level of reimbursment necessary from (my company) to busline" as the only point on the agenda. On our health and safety protocol, anyone other then a tech with internal training are forbidden to move a bus that is indoors.

The lawyer explained this to them, and told them that the way the 43page contract where they hire us for maintenance and repair is written, the action of their employee was a breach of contract, giving me the option to actually fire them as clients. this made them very silent, and they agreed to take full resonsibility for the incident, paying us for the damages to our infrastructure, paying for any overtime that is due to one lift being offline, report them selves to the correct goverment body and writing a letter of apology to my tech.

Tell him about the blower!

Another tech here ran into this once. A user had a nested folder structure that had at least 50 folders/files at the bottom of the heirarchy that were beyond the limit by 10 characters or so. The other tech was trying to transfer this data, and many of the files would not copy. He was attempting to fix it by going folder by folder (at the bottom of the heirarchy) and shortening the folder names so that they were under the limit, then individually copying over the folders and files that would not transfer. I :clint: over, changed the name of the root folder to make it 1 character instead of 15 (effectively shortening the file name of every file nested under it by 14 characters) and copied all the files over all at once.

They are also horrendously overpriced. Which of Zebra's lovely line of products do you get to support?

LP 2824 mostly, and some of the other big network-connected bastards, but I don't have to deal with them much.
How did you know? :D

Tell him about the blower!

Good weekend. Geeking out at WhoFest 2. Met Colin Baker (Doctor Who #6), Nicola Bryant (one of the Doctor's Companions from Colin's era), Terry Malloy (Davros from the classic series), and Nicolas Briggs (voice of the Cybermen and Daleks in the recent series.) Talked and listened to bunches of other geeks talk about Doctor Who and related. Yeah, I'm a nerd.

Next weekend is the annual Pate Swap Meet out at the Motor Speedway for the Dallas/Ft. Worth-area folks. Going to be getting my car nerd on all weekend there.

Pretty sure the gauges and everything don't work. As nuts as the guy that built this thing is he isn't that nuts. He's holding it for me, I'll check it out Wednesday afternoon. I should be able to get it sent down on a work truck or with one of the guys I race with who does a lot of odd pickup/haul jobs. We'll see.

This guy made his work:

I like this one - he just user select bits and interior trims hung on a wood framework:

Though his gauges don't work. He appears to have something connect to the AC controls (I'd totally have a blower hooked up just for a little cooling air...)

Here's an idea: this guy used an additional monitor in place of the gauges to show in-game gauges.

This is actually the one I was looking for:

edit: actually, I think these are two different ones. Same idea.
edit2: nah, same one. He swaps in the actual e30 cluster later in the thread.

I would love to build something like this eventually.

On the phone itself I have the option for.as a camera, as MTP, or USB3.0 which my laptop doesn't have. Coincidentally mom and dad just asked me if I had want or need for a windows 7 15" laptop and I said sure send it over, they upgraded and don't need it any more. I'll finally be off XP!

USB 3.0 is backwards-compatible with earlier versions. It just won't be as fast.

You do realize he has an account here right?

Why would I know that?

Also, a reminder: for the DFW and nearby goons, the annual Pate Swap Meet starts tomorrow (Thursday). Biggest swap meet in the area. I'm taking $$, no telling what you find out there m

What's this all about? Sounds interesting.

Sorry, didn't check the thread after work.

Runs through Sunday, though Sunday is usually pretty thin.

Computer chat: my Mac Pro quad-core decided it doesn't wan to start any more. I usually use a Mac laptop, and run the Mac Pro in Win 7 via Boot Camp, sometimes Mac OS 10.10. I have no idea when it quit, but all it does when you hit power is whir the fans for about 2 seconds then shut off. Sounds like the power supply to me. Well, it was a free Mac, all I've got into it is the RAM and RAM carrier cards.
