Serious question. Why do players clip through ships so easily in SC?

Also where do players lose all velocity when they clip through a ship while its moving?

Well to take a stab I'd say its because Cryengine has never handled players moving around on a vehicle, they've always had players lock into fixed positions so they've had to treat the vehicle as an entirely different object to what the engine was designed to handle. Essentially having an object with a velocity and having that velocity properly handle objects on top it with their own velocity and be directly impacted by that movement is a super important design point that cant just be shitted out quickly. If you gently caress it up you have the treadmill effect of a person getting launched off or the two objects incorrectly checking where the other is at any given time and the collision only catching up as the smaller object has changed positions in such a way that they now occupy the same location. When this happens objects in the Cryengine attempt to separate each other which results in the player being phased through the floor and push out of the position the ship was occupying.

A lot of people have suggested they are using the ship as a player character object type which creates the collision effect you see in most first person shooters to prevent people from just clogging up doorways if they go afk. The two objects have more of a jello quality where player characters can collide but are usually slid across the floor just enough to allow the other player to move past. This is a loving nightmare if you want to have something with a hard surface like a space ship the player is surrounded by on all sides as the ship and the player are going to be constantly janking against each other as the engine tries to jostle everything in position. This gets exponentially worse as you add more player characters the engine is also trying to jank against to keep both these characters in the much larger ship character when all of them can be overlapping each other at the same time.

Now usually this sliding is intelligent in a FPS because it will prevent a player from being forced off a ledge and killed by players slowly sliding them along. This is not super difficult as you're just tracking against a 2d surface you usually have some clear kind of barriers you can set up or a check to see if the slide the engine is about to make is going to cause an elevation change. You move this into a environment where a slide can come from literally any direction at any time and a vertical change is no long something to be able to check against quickly you end up with the engine making exponentially more mistakes.

On top of that you have a loving multiplayer game and all the poo poo that comes along with that netcode. Trying to handle latency is a giant force multiplier on anything the engine should be reasonable able to handle. So not only does the system need to be constantly checking as a player model can be pushed from any direction TO any direction, AND its handling two objects with different velocity colliding against each other constantly (just by walking around) AND you have two objects that have a jello like property jostling for position, the engine now ALSO has to handle that none of the information its getting is going to be accurate so it has to guess where any of these objects are going to be at any given time and update its own guesses and calculations when new information comes in that actively contradicts the calculations and guess its already made.

If any single one of these guesses is wrong or any calculation doesnt handle everything perfectly, the player model (being the smaller and probably with a lower velocity) is going to sink into the other object and the game engine is going to correct by trying to eject that player. It does this by assigning an opposite velocity to the player to nudge it out. If that doesnt work it might change direction or increase velocity or both. Given mathematically there is less directions back into the ship than there are outside the ship, you're likely to just get shunted out into space. This means it only needs to apply an equal and opposite velocity to move them away from the ship collision point and then cuts their speed back to what it was (usually near zero).

Alright you dumb gently caress americans. I keep seeing a bunch of idiots thinking you're supposed to put vegemite straight on bread and I cannot believe I have to explain how this poo poo works. You put butter on hot toast so it melts and then you spread just a little bit of vegemite so it gives you the salty flavour combo on it. Like I genuinely dont understand how this happens. A patcher is actually a genuinely clever piece of software usually providing a very important service that is ultimately kinda simple to implement thanks to just how widespread its use is. Your points of failure are almost always going to be failure to properly connect and maintain a connect to a server and the ability for a patcher to extract and override game files. Unless theres some permissions setting issue going on, the second part implemented badly is just going to break your game install to varying degrees but not gently caress the patcher up. I genuinely dont see whats going on to cause something like this unless they just have a cascade of unhandled exceptions that then get tossed back to windows to deal with. Unless they've done something genuinely insane and built their own install/downloading code??? I assume the reason is just it erroring up when it cant find the file path to scan for files existing missing. They were confirmed to be putting their game files/client settings in standard C\program files (instead of having user settings in user folders) right ?
