How likely is it that I'll be able to head to Best Buy/Target on Friday and grab one of these? I'm cautiously holding off on preordering in hopes I can get one faster from retail.

So grabbing one of these at Best Buy tomorrow is definitely not happening, right?

+thanks to everyone who explained a little about Plex. Sounds neat. If home sharing ends up going stale on me I'll check it out.

Went ahead and ordered online like I should have on Monday. I'm excited! I use the Apple TV for everything tv related aside from gaming so I'm sure I'll like the new one just as much as the 3rd gen. Being able to sleep to Apple Music through the tv seems lovely.

Canceled my order last night and grabbed one at the local Best Buy. Sure it has it's day one issues and lack of content but it's a lot better than the 3rd one as a base. I'm really happy with the purchase. The animations linked with the touch controls are absolutely lovely. If you're freaking out and trying to cancel because ~bugs~ just relax. It's the best set top box I've used and I've messed with quite a few.

The aerial photos are loving gorgeous

This is probably the case but I still hope we'll get a voice toggle eventually.

ATV is great so far, much better than my roku 2.

As much as I appreciate the Roku for weird cooking channels, porn, and 24/7 80s music channels it's hilarious going from one to the Apple TV. The jump in overall polish and quality is staggering. I'm hoping with the App Store being a thing now we'll get more of those odd niche channels on the ATV.

I'm probably only using mine for AirPlay, Netflix, HBO, FXNow and a few other apps and there's no way I would go back to my 3. The 4 is so much more sleek and smooth in the interface and switching and opening apps is lightning fast.

I'm debating taking my ATV4 back. Ideally for a replacement but maybe just for good. I love the ducking thing but it buffers and locks up like a bitch and my ATV3 never did. I did a factory restore to no avail.

It really shouldn't do that, so at least try a replacement to check if the ATV4 just doesn't like your internet or something. Mine has been in use for at least 7-8 hours a day since launch and it has never crashed, buffered abnormally, froze, anything like that.

I'm still debating if I want a new Apple TV. What is everyone doing with theirs that they didn't do on the old one?

The old one feels like v.0000002 compared to this. The remote and interface alone are worth the price. The speed of app launching/switching is incredibly useful as well. One of my least favorite things is sitting down for a meal and wanting tv and having to spend a few minutes fumbling with a remote. The ATV4 makes that last a few seconds.

I don't even care about games or most apps but I've been very happy with my purchase.

That’s fair. The features and interface are exactly what I want and the suggestions and recommendations have gotten really good for me. It’s the only platform I’ve ever used that actually understands metal genres so that’s a pleasant surprise. I’m sure Spotify handles that fine now though too.

We just got our first 4K tv. It is awesome but all I have plugged into it is a base PS4 and a Apple TV from either one or two generations back. A PS4 Pro isn’t the best purchase considering the PS5 is probably dropping late next year + they could announce a Pro price drop at E3 next month. So that leaves the gf and I considering an Apple TV 4K. We currently have Prime + Hulu + non 4K Netflix so the options aren’t great but 4K rentals and 4K screensavers sound nice.

Worth it?

Whether your current one is one or two generations back makes a huge difference. AppleTV 3 doesn’t have an App Store or the TV app, while AppleTV 4 does.

If you have a 3 (with the silver aluminum remote), yeah absolutely get a 4K.

If you have a 4, eh it’s completely your call.

It’s a 4 yeah!

MarcusSA posted:

The Apple TV 4k is amazing.

Also directv now runs a deal every few months where if you pay for 3 months of service you get an Apple TV free.

They are great devices and imo much better vs a ps4 and probably the 5.

I don’t need directv and I’m definitely buying a PS5 at launch but yeah gently caress it, I think I’ll buy a ATV4K. It’s worth it in any situation I think and should be pretty future proof at this point.

I enjoy movies a lot and don't mind the occasional $5 iTunes rental and a nice 4K TV combined with a AppleTV4K is great. Your mileage may vary.

I did manage to forget that we typically watch movies on the PS4 since we have wireless surround sound headphones for it. That complicated things a bit since we can’t with the Apple TV. Hm. Still probably worth it though.

I appreciate all the advice! I have realized though that gaming + movies (with wireless headphones) is our #1 focus so I think we might just go for the PS4 Pro. I’ll have an ATV4K eventually but in the near future I’m okay with doing big deal games movies and shows on the PS4 Pro and random background noise stuff on the ATV4. Thanks for teaching me about the the ATV4K though, it seems like a lovely box. I’m glad we’re so far past the first two iterations of the ATVs. Those were... not very good.

The only downside of this is that the PS4 doesn’t have Criterion/Shudder so I still don’t have a reason to subscribe to those :negative:

Honestly my take is that I really loving hate subscriptions. It’s one of my least favorite trends of the modern age. I like things it’s attached to but the system as a whole, ugh. Apple at least doesn’t entirely gently caress me over though. Their stuff is usually high value with a consistent level of quality throughout. If I’m going to engage in modern entertainment/technology I may as well go with the company who has given me quality for my money for 10+ years.
